Microfabrication of hybrid fluid membrane for microengines
2015
International audience; This paper describes the microfabrication and dynamic characterization of thick membranes providing a technological solution for microengines. The studied membranes are called hybrid fluid-membrane (HFM) and consist of two thin membranes that encapsulate an incompressible fluid. This work details the microelectromechanical system (MEMS) scalable fabrication and characterization of HFMs. The membranes are composite structures based on Silicon spiral springs embedded in a polymer (RTV silicone). The anodic bonding of multiple stacks of Si/glass structures, the fluid filling and the sealing have been demonstrated. Various HFMs were successfully fabricated and their dyna…
Comparative study of mandibular linear measurements obtained by cone beam computed tomography and digital calipers
2014
Objectives: Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is an innovative dental of imaging system characterized by rapid volumetric imaging with patient exposure to a single dose of radiation. The present study was carried out to compare the linear measurements obtained with CBCT and digital caliper in 20 mandibles from human cadavers. Study design: A total of 4800 linear measurements were measured between different mandibular anatomical points with CBCT and digital caliper. The real measurements were defined as those obtained with the digital caliper. Posteriorly, the mandibles were scanned to obtain the CBCT images, with software-based measurements of the distances. Results: The measurements obt…
Conformational properties of methylene bridged resorcarenes
1998
Abstract Conformations and conformational interconversions of resorcarene 1c have been studied by molecular mechanics calculations. As with calix[4]arenes the general stability of the four basic conformations is cone > partial cone > 1,2-alternate > 1,3-alternate. The lowest energy is calculated for a pinched cone conformer with C2v symmetry stabilised by intramolecular hydrogen bonds of the two “parallel” resorcinol units as donors. The topomerisation of the cone conformation proceeds via the partial cone and 1,2-alternate intermediates with a calculated barrier of 9.9 kcal mol−1 which is in excellent agreement with the experimental value.
Atmospheric dispersion of volcanic CO 2 at Vulcano island
2001
Abstract Intensive carbon dioxide emanations occur throughout the island of Vulcano (Aeolian Archipelago, north of Sicily, Italy). The main sources of CO 2 on the island are the hot fumaroles (∼500°C) of the northern ridge of the La Fossa crater, the fumaroles of the Baia di Levante and the emission areas spread out both on the slopes of the cone and in the nearby plain. The carbon dioxide from the soil can be considered as being emitted at air temperature. In this work, CO 2 concentrations in the air over the island are estimated by means of two numerical codes. This paper takes advantage of the parallel knowledge gained from a previously written paper for SO 2 emissions from the La Fossa …

Roadmap on 3D integral imaging: Sensing, processing, and display
2020
This Roadmap article on three-dimensional integral imaging provides an overview of some of the research activities in the field of integral imaging. The article discusses various aspects of the field including sensing of 3D scenes, processing of captured information, and 3D display and visualization of information. The paper consists of a series of 15 sections from the experts presenting various aspects of the field on sensing, processing, displays, augmented reality, microscopy, object recognition, and other applications. Each section represents the vision of its author to describe the progress, potential, vision, and challenging issues in this field.
Projection-based improvement of 3D reconstructions from motion-impaired dental cone beam CT data.
2019
Purpose Computed tomography (CT) and, in particular, cone beam CT (CBCT) have been increasingly used as a diagnostic tool in recent years. Patient motion during acquisition is common in CBCT due to long scan times. This results in degraded image quality and may potentially increase the number of retakes. Our aim was to develop a marker-free iterative motion correction algorithm that works on the projection images and is suitable for local tomography. Methods We present an iterative motion correction algorithm that allows the patient's motion to be detected and taken into account during reconstruction. The core of our method is a fast GPU-accelerated three-dimensional reconstruction algorith…
New Acylated Preatroxigenin Saponins from Atroxima congolana
2003
Eight new acylated preatroxigenin saponins 1–8 were isolated as four inseparable mixtures of the trans- and cis-4-methoxycinnamoyl derivatives, atroximasaponins A1/A2 (1/2), B1/B2 (3/4), C1/C2 (5/6) and D1/D2 (7/8) from the roots of Atroxima congolana. These compounds are the first examples of triterpene saponins containing preatroxigenin (=(2β,3β,4α,22β)-2,3,22,27-tetrahydroxyolean-12-ene-23,28-dioic acid as aglycone. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of extensive 1D- and 2D-NMR studies and FAB-MS as 3-O(β-D-glucopyranosyl)preatroxigenin 28-{O-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(14)-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(12)-O-[O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(13)-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(13)]-4-O-(trans-4-methoxycinnamoyl)-β…
Fostering university-industry collaborations through university teaching
2019
Unversity-industry links and their impact on innovation processes have been widely acknowledged. However, previous studies have mainly examined university-industry knowledge transfer activities from the perspective of the research and third stream missions. This paper goes a step further, analysing such processes from the perspective of the university’s teaching mission. More specifically, it explores how educational crowdsourcing platforms help bring universities and industry together to develop joint activities in undergraduate and graduate programmes. Nine platforms with different business models were examined. A qualitative exploratory approach was adopted to manually collect and analys…
MODELING THE TRANSVERSE MOMENTUM DEPENDENT PARTON DISTRIBUTIONS
2010
We review quark model calculations of the transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs). For the T-even TMDs, we discuss the physical origin of model relations which hold in a large class of quark models. For the T-odd TMDs we review results in a light-cone constituent quark model (CQM) with the final state interaction effects generated via single-gluon exchange mechanism. As phenomenological application, we show the good agreement between results in the light-cone CQM and available experimental data for the Collins asymmetry.
