A genetic link between synsedimentary tectonics-expelled fluids, microbial sulfate reduction and cone-in-cone structures

2018

14 pages; International audience; The late Jurassic (Tithonian) marlstones of the Boulonnais area (English Channel, France) contains diagenetic carbonate beds and nodules. Some nodules exhibit cone-in-cone structures on their lower face. We studied such nodules using various techniques of imaging and chemical (major and trace-elements) and isotopic analyses (Ccarb, Corg, O and S stable isotopes). We interpret the cone-in-cone to be the end product of carbonate-nodule formation during early diagenesis. The diagenetic carbonate precipitation was induced by microbial activity (bacteria and(?) archeae) fueled by upward-migrating fluids. Fluid expulsion was itself triggered by synsedimentary fau…

Solvent for removing silicone oil from intraocular lenses: experimental study comparing various biomaterials.

2000

Abstract Purpose To evaluate the effectiveness of a perfluorocarbon—perfluorohexyloctane (PFHO)—in removing silicone oil from different intraocular lenses (IOLs) and determine whether any removal technique enhances the removal of silicone oil. Methods Six IOL materials were analyzed: standard poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), heparin-surface-modified (HSM) PMMA, AcrySof, 2 polyHEMAs with different water contents, and a second-generation SLM-2 silicone. One or 2 μL of a highly viscous silicone oil (5700 cs) was applied to the center of each IOL optic. Perfluorohexyloctane (2 mL) was then used to remove the silicone oil by 1 of 3 techniques: immersion of the IOL in PFHO; irrigation of the sil…

The medieval botanical lexicon in some falconry works in romance languages

2018

Finalm…

Hemispheric differences in specificity effects in talker identification

2010

In the visual domain, Marsolek and colleagues (1999, 2008) have found support for two dissociable and parallel neural subsystems underlying object and shape recognition: an abstract-category subsystem that operates more effectively in the left cerebral hemisphere (LH), and a specific-exemplar subsystem that operates more effectively in the right cerebral hemisphere (RH). Evidence of this asymmetry has been observed in priming specificity for linguistic (words, pseudoword forms) and nonlinguistic (objects) stimuli. In the auditory domain, the authors previously found hemispheric asymmetries in priming effects for linguistic (spoken words) and nonlinguistic (environmental sounds) stimuli. In …

The synthesis and effect of fluorinated chalcone derivatives on nitric oxide production

2002

Abstract Dimethoxy- and trimethoxychalcone derivatives, with various patterns of fluorination, were synthesized and evaluated for their influence on nitric oxide production. Some of them, chalcones 1 , 5 , 7 , 10 , 11 and 17 , inhibited NO production with an IC 50 in the submicromolar range; 17 is especially noteworthy because of its potency (IC 50 30 nM). These effects were not the consequence of a direct inhibitory action on enzyme activity but the inhibition of enzyme expression.

Novel anti-inflammatory chalcone derivatives inhibit the induction of nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase-2 in mouse peritoneal macrophages

1999

AbstractIn a previous work, we tested a series of chalcone derivatives as possible anti-inflammatory compounds. We now investigate the effects of three of those compounds, CH1, CH8 and CH12, on nitric oxide and prostanoid generation in mouse peritoneal macrophages stimulated with lipopolysaccharide and in the mouse air pouch injected with zymosan, where they showed a dose-dependent inhibition with inhibitory concentration 50% values in the μM range. This effect was not the consequence of a direct inhibitory action on enzyme activities. Our results demonstrated that chalcone derivatives inhibited de novo inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase-2 synthesis, being a novel therapeuti…

A new chloroquinolinyl chalcone derivative as inhibitor of inflammatory and immune response in mice and rats

2003

AbstractThe synthetic chalcone derivative 1-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-3-(3-(6,7-dimethoxy-2-chloroquinolinyl))-2-propen-1-one (CIDQ) was evaluated for its anti-inflammatory, analgesic and immunomodulatory efficacy in-vitro and in-vivo. CIDQ concentration-dependently inhibited the production of nitric oxide (NO) (IC50 4.3 μM) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) (IC50 1.8 μM) in RAW 264.7 macrophages stimulated with lipopolysaccharide. Human mononuclear cell proliferation was significantly inhibited by 10 μM CIDQ. Oral administration of CIDQ (10–30 mg kg−1) in the 24-h zymosan-stimulated mouse air-pouch model produced a dose-dependent reduction of cell migration as well as NO and PGE2 levels in exudates. …

Development of a long-lasting ventricular catheter impregnated with a combination of antibiotics.

2003

A ventricular silicone catheter impregnated with a combination of rifampin and a quinolone was developed in order to prevent ventricular shunt related infections. As model substance for the quinolones we used sparfloxacin, because of its specific physicochemical properties resulting in a quantitative detection also in the presence of a second antibiotic. In our study we focused especially on an optimization of the antibiotic release out of the impregnated catheters in order to develop long lasting devices with a broad antimicrobial spectrum. A release-optimized catheter was tested with an in vitro colonization test and additionally with a method developed to examine the spread of bacteria o…
