Mauro Picone, Sandro Faedo, and the numerical solution of partial differential equations in Italy (1928-1953)
2013
In this paper we revisit the pioneering work on the numerical analysis of partial differential equations (PDEs) by two Italian mathematicians, Mauro Picone (1885-1977) and Sandro Faedo (1913-2001). We argue that while the development of constructive methods for the solution of PDEs was central to Picone's vision of applied mathematics, his own work in this area had relatively little direct influence on the emerging field of modern numerical analysis. We contrast this with Picone's influence through his students and collaborators, in particular on the work of Faedo which, while not the result of immediate applied concerns, turned out to be of lasting importance for the numerical analysis of …
Fixed point results under generalized c-distance with application to nonlinear fourth-order differential equation
2019
We consider the notion of generalized c-distance in the setting of ordered cone b-metric spaces and obtain some new fixed point results. Our results provide a more general statement, under which can be unified some theorems of the existing literature. In particular, we refer to the results of Sintunavarat et al. [W. Sintunavarat, Y.J. Cho, P. Kumam, Common fixed point theorems for c-distance in ordered cone metric spaces, Comput. Math. Appl. 62 (2011) 1969-1978]. Some examples and an application to nonlinear fourth-order differential equation are given to support the theory.
Association between maxillary sinus pathology and odontogenic lesions in patients evaluated by cone beam computed tomography. A systematic review and…
2019
Background A study is made of the association between maxillary sinus pathology and odontogenic lesions in patients evaluated with cone beam computed tomography. Material and Methods A literature search was made in five databases and OpenGrey. Methodological assessment was carried out using the Newcastle-Ottawa tool for observational studies. The random-effects model was used for the meta-analysis. Results Twenty-one studies were included in the qualitative review and 6 in the meta-analysis. Most presented moderate or low risk of bias. The periodontal disease showed to be associated with the thickening of the sinus membrane (TSM). Mucous retention cysts and opacities were reported in few st…
The Quaternary Eifel Volcanic Fields
1983
The Quaternary (ca. 0.7 Ma) volcanic fields in the western central part of the Rhenish Massif (West Eifel and East Eifel) have formed roughly synchronously with the main Quaternary phase of uplift The fields are 50 and 30 km long, elongated in NW-SE direction, contain ca. 240 and 90 volcanoes and are dominantly made of K-rich nephelinitic-leucititic-basanitic scoria cones. The larger West Eifel differs from the East Eifel field by more mafic and silica-undersaturated magmas, greater abundance and larger size of peridotite xenoliths and near absence of highly differentiated magmas contrasted with the occurrence of four highly differentiated phonolite volcanoes in the smaller East Eifel field…
Argan oil prevents down-regulation induced by endotoxin on liver fatty acid oxidation and gluconeogenesis and on peroxisome proliferator-activated re…
2015
In patients with sepsis, liver metabolism and its capacity to provide other organs with energetic substrates are impaired. This and many other pathophysiological changes seen in human patients are reproduced in mice injected with purified endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide, LPS). In the present study, down-regulation of genes involved in hepatic fatty acid oxidation (FAOx) and gluconeogenesis in mice exposed to LPS was challenged by nutritional intervention with Argan oil. Mice given a standard chow supplemented or not with either 6% (w/w) Argan oil (AO) or 6% (w/w) olive oil (OO) prior to exposure to LPS were explored for liver gene expressions assessed by mRNA transcript levels and/or enzyme a…
There is no puzzle about change
2009
This paper argues against the common practice of presenting perdurantism, endurantism, and other views about persistence and time as solutions to an alleged puzzle about change. Different recent attempts to generate a puzzle about change are examined and found unsuccessful. This does not mean, however, that the relevant views about persistence and time are not well motivated, but rather that their interest and purpose is independent of their suitability for solving the alleged puzzle.

On Spaces of Bochner and Pettis Integrable Functions and Their Set-Valued Counterparts
2011
The aim of this paper is to give a brief summary of the Pettis and Bochner integrals, how they are related, how they are generalized to the set-valued setting and the canonical Banach spaces of bounded maps between Banach spaces that they generate. The main tool that we use to relate the Banach space-valued case to the set-valued case, is the R ̊adstr ̈om embedding theorem.
Determination of Cochlear Duct Length With 3D Versus Two-dimensional Methods: A Retrospective Clinical Study of Imaging by Computed Tomography and Co…
2021
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to compare three different methods for measurement of cochlear duct length (CDL) in the clinical setting for two different imaging modalities, namely computed tomography (CT) and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). PATIENTS AND METHODS One hundred temporal bone data sets (CT: n=50; CBCT: n=50) of non-malformed cochleae were retrospectively analyzed using three different CDL estimation techniques: 3D curved multiplanar reconstruction (cMPR), 2D cMPR and the A-value formula. RESULTS The data sets belonged to 60 patients (34 males, 26 females; mean age=50.28±18.58 years). For both imaging modalities, application of the 3D cMPR estimation technique led to …
