Back to the Amitsur-Levitzki theorem: a super version for the orthosymplectic Lie superalgebra osp(1, 2n)

2003

We prove an Amitsur-Levitzki type theorem for the Lie superalgebras osp(1,2n) inspired by Kostant's cohomological interpretation of the classical theorem. We show that the Lie superalgebras gl(p,q) cannot satisfy an Amitsur-Levitzki type super identity if p, q are non zero and conjecture that neither can any other classical simple Lie superalgebra with the exception of osp(1,2n).

The minimal model of Hahn for the Calvin cycle.

2018

There are many models of the Calvin cycle of photosynthesis in the literature. When investigating the dynamics of these models one strategy is to look at the simplest possible models in order to get the most detailed insights. We investigate a minimal model of the Calvin cycle introduced by Hahn while he was pursuing this strategy. In a variant of the model not including photorespiration it is shown that there exists exactly one positive steady state and that this steady state is unstable. For generic initial data either all concentrations tend to infinity at lates times or all concentrations tend to zero at late times. In a variant including photorespiration it is shown that for suitable v…

„Un conflitto intestino e una malattia dell’anima“: ΝΟΣΟΣ E ΣΤΑΣΙΣ nel Sofista di Platone (Soph. 228 A 7–8)

2012

Abstract In Sophist 228a7–8 the reading of Plato’s manuscripts διαφορᾶς διαφϑοράν is defended on the basis of a reconsideration of the Galenic passages of De placitis Hippocratis et Platonis (V 2, p. 302, 18–19 and V 3, p. 310, 26 De Lacy) usually advanced in order to maintain that it is corrupt and is to be changed into in διαφϑορᾶς διαφοράν. The analysis of several other passages of the Platonic corpus concerning στάσις and νόσος, and the comparison with Plutarch’s De Stoicorum repugnantiis 1041b, which shows a textual history very similar to the considered passage of Plato’s Sophist, further support the reading in the manuscripts.

Non-preserved curvature conditions under constrained mean curvature flows

2014

We provide explicit examples which show that mean convexity (i.e. positivity of the mean curvature) and positivity of the scalar curvature are non-preserved curvature conditions for hypersurfaces of the Euclidean space evolving under either the volume- or the area preserving mean curvature flow. The relevance of our examples is that they disprove some statements of the previous literature, overshadow a widespread folklore conjecture about the behaviour of these flows and bring out the discouraging news that a traditional singularity analysis is not possible for constrained versions of the mean curvature flow.

L2-torsion of hyperbolic manifolds

1998

The L^2-torsion is an invariant defined for compact L^2-acyclic manifolds of determinant class, for example odd dimensional hyperbolic manifolds. It was introduced by John Lott and Varghese Mathai and computed for hyperbolic manifolds in low dimensions. In this paper we show that the L^2-torsion of hyperbolic manifolds of arbitrary odd dimension does not vanish. This was conjectured by J. Lott and W. Lueck. Some concrete values are computed and an estimate of their growth with the dimension is given.

Coprime actions and correspondences of Brauer characters

2017

We prove several results giving substantial evidence in support of the conjectural existence of a Glauberman–Isaacs bijection for Brauer characters under a coprime action. We also discuss related bijections for the McKay conjecture.

Contractions yielding new supersymmetric extensions of the poincaré algebra

1991

Two new Poincare superalgebras are analysed. They are obtained by the Wigner-Inonu contraction from two real forms of the superalgebra OSp(2;4;C) - one describing the N = 2 anti-de-Sitter superalgebra with a non-compact internal symmetry SO(1, 1) and the other corresponding to the de-Sitter superalgebra with internal symmetry SO(2). Both are 19-dimensional self-conjugate extensions of the Konopel'chenko superalgebra. They contain 10 Poincare generators and one generator of internal symmetry in addition to 8 odd generators half of which, however, do not commute with translations.
