Infinite orbit depth and length of Melnikov functions

Abstract In this paper we study polynomial Hamiltonian systems d F = 0 in the plane and their small perturbations: d F + ϵ ω = 0 . The first nonzero Melnikov function M μ = M μ ( F , γ , ω ) of the Poincare map along a loop γ of d F = 0 is given by an iterated integral [3] . In [7] , we bounded the length of the iterated integral M μ by a geometric number k = k ( F , γ ) which we call orbit depth. We conjectured that the bound is optimal. Here, we give a simple example of a Hamiltonian system F and its orbit γ having infinite orbit depth. Anomalous partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms III: Abundance and incoherence

Let $M$ be a closed 3-manifold which admits an Anosov flow. In this paper we develop a technique for constructing partially hyperbolic representatives in many mapping classes of $M$. We apply this technique both in the setting of geodesic flows on closed hyperbolic surfaces and for Anosov flows which admit transverse tori. We emphasize the similarity of both constructions through the concept of $h$-transversality, a tool which allows us to compose different mapping classes while retaining partial hyperbolicity. On the Oort conjecture for Shimura varieties of unitary and orthogonal types

In this paper we study the Oort conjecture on Shimura subvarieties contained generically in the Torelli locus in the Siegel modular variety $\mathcal{A}_g$. Using the poly-stability of Higgs bundles on curves and the slope inequality of Xiao on fibred surfaces, we show that a Shimura curve $C$ is not contained generically in the Torelli locus if its canonical Higgs bundles contains a unitary Higgs subbundle of rank at least $(4g+2)/5$. From this we prove that a Shimura subvariety of $\mathbf{SU}(n,1)$-type is not contained generically in the Torelli locus when a numerical inequality holds, which involves the genus $g$, the dimension $n+1$, the degree $2d$ of CM field of the Hermitian space,…

THE AMITSUR–LEVITZKI THEOREM FOR THE ORTHOSYMPLECTIC LIE SUPERALGEBRA osp(1, 2n)

We conjecture that no other classical Lie superalgebra can satisfy an Amitsur–Levitzki type super identity. We show several (super) identities for the standard super polynomials. Finally, a combinatorial conjecture on the standard skew supersymmetric polynomials is stated.

On Large Orbits of Actions of Finite Soluble Groups: Applications

The main aim of this survey paper is to present two orbit theorems and to show how to apply them to obtain a result that can be regarded as a significant step towards the solution of Gluck’s conjecture on large character degrees of finite soluble groups. We also show how to apply them to solve questions about intersections of some conjugacy families of subgroups of finite soluble groups.

Let $gamma$ be a smooth, non-closed, simple curve whose image is symmetric with respect to the $y$-axis, and let $D$ be a planar domain consisting of the points on one side of $gamma$, within a suitable distance $delta$ of $gamma$. Denote by $mu_1^{odd}(D)$ the smallest nontrivial Neumann eigenvalue having a corresponding eigenfunction that is odd with respect to the $y$-axis. If $gamma$ satisfies some simple geometric conditions, then $mu_1^{odd}(D)$ can be sharply estimated from below in terms of the length of $gamma$ , its curvature, and $delta$. On the slope of hyperelliptic fibrations with positive relative irregularity

Let $f:\, S \to B$ be a locally non-trivial relatively minimal fibration of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g\geq 2$ with relative irregularity $q_f$. We show a sharp lower bound on the slope $\lambda_f$ of $f$. As a consequence, we prove a conjecture of Barja and Stoppino on the lower bound of $\lambda_f$ as an increasing function of $q_f$ in this case, and we also prove a conjecture of Xiao on the ampleness of the direct image of the relative canonical sheaf if $\lambda_f<4$.

The Oort conjecture on Shimura curves in the Torelli locus of curves

2014

Oort has conjectured that there do not exist Shimura curves contained generically in the Torelli locus of genus-$g$ curves when $g$ is large enough. In this paper we prove the Oort conjecture for Shimura curves of Mumford type and Shimura curves parameterizing principally polarized $g$-dimensional abelian varieties isogenous to $g$-fold self-products of elliptic curves for $g&gt;11$. We also prove that there do not exist Shimura curves contained generically in the Torelli locus of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g&gt;7$. As a consequence, we obtain a finiteness result regarding smooth genus-$g$ curves with completely decomposable Jacobians, which is related to a question of Ekedahl and Serre.
