Data Banks and Multivariate Statistics in Physical Anthropology

1984

In recent decades, the fields of administration and economy, the press and - last but not least - the sciences have been characterized by an “explosion of knowledge”, and, as a consequence, by the problem of managing the rapidly increasing mass of information. It has been estimated that knowledge doubles each five years, and even that the interval of doubling seems to decrease. The main response to this challenge are computerized and structured data collections called data banks. “Data banks are systems of data collections which are organized according to logical and/or formal criteria; they should make it possible to reproduce the data of the total collection arranged according to differen…

A test of the feasibility of γp-coincidence techniques in conjunction with the (t, pγ) reaction

1982

Abstract A setup has been tested for γp coincidence measurements in conjunction with the (t, pγ) reaction. The γ-rays were detected by a Ge(Li) detector and protons with an annular Si(Au) detector placed at forward angles, elastically scattered tritons being removed with an absorber.

Can we see syllables in monosyllabic words? A study with illusory conjunctions

2009

Mathey, Zagar, Doignon, and Seigneuric (2006) reported an inhibitory effect of syllabic neighbourhood in monosyllabic French words suggesting that syllable units mediate the access to lexical representations of monosyllabic stimuli. Two experiments were conducted to investigate the perception of syllable units in monosyllabic stimuli. The illusory conjunction paradigm was used to examine perceptual groupings of letters. Experiment 1 showed that potential syllables in monosyllabic French words (e.g., BI in BICHE) affected the pattern of illusory conjunctions. Experiment 2 indicated that the perceptual parsing in monosyllabic items was due to syllable information and orthographic redundancy. …

The forgotten mathematical legacy of Peano

2019

International audience; The formulations that Peano gave to many mathematical notions at the end of the 19th century were so perfect and modern that they have become standard today. A formal language of logic that he created, enabled him to perceive mathematics with great precision and depth. He described mathematics axiomatically basing the reasoning exclusively on logical and set-theoretical primitive terms and properties, which was revolutionary at that time. Yet, numerous Peano’s contributions remain either unremembered or underestimated.

r‐Process Abundances and Chronometers in Metal‐poor Stars

1998

Rapid neutron-capture (i.e., r-process) nucleosynthesis calculations, employing internally consistent and physically realistic nuclear physics input (QRPA beta-decay rates and the ETFSI-Q nuclear mass model), have been made. These calculations are compared with ground-based and HST observations of neutron-capture elements in the metal poor halo stars CS 22892--052, HD 115444, HD 122563 and HD 126238. The elemental abundances in all four metal-poor stars are consistent with the solar r-process elemental distribution for the elements Z >/= 56. These results strongly suggest, at least for those elements, that the relative elemental r-process abundances have not changed over the history of t…

Coexisting structures in 115Sn and 116Sn

1998

Abstract Excited states up to I ≈ 20 in 115 Sn and 116 Sn, populated via the ( 18 O, αxn) reactions, have been studied using the DORIS Ge detector array in conjunction with charged particle detectors. In both nuclei, spherical as well as regular, deformed level structures were found. The spherical states are interpreted to arise from pure neutron configurations, while the deformed, intruder bands obviously involve proton 2p-2h excitations across the Z = 50 shell gap.

In-beam electron spectrometer used in conjunction with a gas-filled recoil separator

2004

The conversion-electron spectrometer SACRED has been redesigned for use in conjunction with the RITU gas-filled recoil separator. The system allows in-beam recoil-decay-tagging (RDT) measurements of internal conversion electrons. The performance of the system using standard sources and in-beam is described.
