Fillets:Cues for connections in Focus+Context views of graph-like diagrams

We apply fillets-smoothing of sharp angles at the joints-between the connections and nodes of graph-like diagrams. In situations where the graph layout is constrained, e.g. Focus+Context views or views where the coordinates of the nodes are informative, fillets can clarify the relationships considerably without altering the layout. A visual search experiment supports our hypothesis that with fillets it is considerably easier to perceive node-connection structures. We discuss algorithms with different tradeoffs for flexibility and performance for rendering these connections in a single pass using OpenGL.
Anàlisi contrastiva dels marcadors de reformulació i exemplificació

The aim of this paper is to present a contrastive analysis of reformulation and exemplification markers in Catalan and Spanish, on the one hand, and in English, on the other. The study is based on a corpus of expository prose (mainly academic writing). The analysis shows coincidences regarding the sources of the connectives, but also differences relating to the variety of forms and the preference of fixed or variable connectives. The differences identified in the grammar of Catalan and Spanish vs. that of English will be associated with two distinct styles for building expository texts.

Hybrid Steel-Trussed Concrete Beam (HSTCB) is structural typology suitable for light industrialization. HSTCBs usually cover long span with small depths, which lead to significant amount of longitudinal rebars. The latter make beam-column joints more prone to damage due to earthquake-induced cyclic actions. This phenomenon can be avoided using friction-based BCCs. El punto de partida con el que iniciamos este artículo relaciona la enseñanza de elementos gramaticales, como los conectores, con la producción textual de escolares de segundo curso de Educación Primaria. En la investigación, que se lleva a cabo en aula, se elige como dispositivo una secuencia didáctica inspirada en el modelo de la escuela de Ginebra. Aproximació a la partícula "idò", valors i melodies

L’article vol ser una primera aproximació als usos actuals de la partícula catalana idò. Àmpliament utilitzada en la parla col·loquial i espontània de les Illes Balears, la partícula parteix d’usos comuns amb el seu originari doncs (fr. donc, it. dunque), però ha anat prenent altres valors, tot i mantenir una notable simetria. Al costat de valors consecutius i de marcador discursiu pot funcionar com a element interrogatiu i interjecció. Com sovint s’esdevé amb certes partícules, idò pren valors lligats a l’entonació, que permetrà destriar retolacions i significats.
Connectors i processos de gramaticalització

In this article, we analyse the characteristics of the grammaticalization process that originates connectors, taking as analysis corpus the book «Costums de Tortosa». We have identified the temporal forms that became interordinate connectors (causal, consecutive, concessive, conditional and adversative), and have outlined the characteristics of the semantic change and of the sintactical reanalysis which can be observed in this process. As an example of this general process, we have analysed the semantic change in the case «encara» / «encara que» and the sintactical reanalysis in the semifixed structure «jasia ço que».
Anàlisi de les unitats fraseològiques amb funció connectiva en un fragment de conversa col·loquial

L’article se centra en l’anàlisi de les estructures prefabricades, és a dir, de caràcter fraseològic, que indiquen connexió, en un fragment de conversa col·loquial. S’hi analitza el distint grau de gramaticalització que presenten i els valors connectius que indiquen en cada context. Es para especial atenció a la construcció és que, que presenta un grau relativament baix de gramaticalització i que només contextualment pot indicar relacions connectives.
