Kadanoff-Baym approach to quantum transport through interacting nanoscale systems: from the transient to the steady-state regime

2009

We propose a time-dependent many-body approach to study the short-time dynamics of correlated electrons in quantum transport through nanoscale systems contacted to metallic leads. This approach is based on the time-propagation of the Kadanoff-Baym equations for the nonequilibrium many-body Green's function of open and interacting systems out of equilibrium. An important feature of the method is that it takes full account of electronic correlations and embedding effects in the presence of time-dependent external fields, while at the same time satisfying the charge conservation law. The method further extends the Meir-Wingreen formula to the time domain for initially correlated states. We stu…

Hyperbolic character of the angular moment equations of radiative transfer and numerical methods

2000

We study the mathematical character of the angular moment equations of radiative transfer in spherical symmetry and conclude that the system is hyperbolic for general forms of the closure relation found in the literature. Hyperbolicity and causality preservation lead to mathematical conditions allowing to establish a useful characterization of the closure relations. We apply numerical methods specifically designed to solve hyperbolic systems of conservation laws (the so-called Godunov-type methods), to calculate numerical solutions of the radiation transport equations in a static background. The feasibility of the method in any kind of regime, from diffusion to free-streaming, is demonstrat…

A fresh look into the interacting dark matter scenario

2018

The elastic scattering between dark matter particles and radiation represents an attractive possibility to solve a number of discrepancies between observations and standard cold dark matter predictions, as the induced collisional damping would imply a suppression of small-scale structures. We consider this scenario and confront it with measurements of the ionization history of the Universe at several redshifts and with recent estimates of the counts of Milky Way satellite galaxies. We derive a conservative upper bound on the dark matter-photon elastic scattering cross section of $\sigma_{\gamma \rm{DM}} < 8 \times 10^{-10} \, \sigma_T \, \left(m_{\rm DM}/{\rm GeV}\right)$ at $95\%$~CL, abou…

Testing WWγ vertex in radiative muon decay

2019

Large numbers of muons will be produced at facilities developed to probe the lepton-flavor-violating process μ→eγ. We show that by constructing a suitable asymmetry, radiative muon decay μ→eγνμν̄e can also be used to test the WWγ vertex at such facilities. The process has two missing neutrinos in the final state, and upon integrating their momenta the partial differential decay rate shows no radiation-amplitude zero. However, we establish that an easily separable part of the normalized differential decay rate that is odd under the exchange of photon and electron energies does have a zero in the case of the standard model (SM). This new type of zero has hitherto not been studied in the liter…

Bound-state dark matter and Dirac neutrino mass

2018

We propose a simple theory for the idea that cosmological dark matter (DM) may be present today mainly in the form of stable neutral hadronic thermal relics. In our model neutrino masses arise radiatively from the exchange of colored DM constituents, giving a common origin for both dark matter and neutrino mass. The exact conservation of $B-L$ symmetry ensures dark matter stability and the Dirac nature of neutrinos. The theory can be falsified by dark matter nuclear recoil direct detection experiments, leading also to possible signals at a next generation hadron collider.

Presymplectic manifolds and conservation laws

2008

In this paper we make use of a new structure called seeded fibre bundle. This allows us to combine the symplectic formalism and general relativity. A theorem of existence is obtained and some examples and properties are studied.

Numerical relativistic hydrodynamics: Local characteristic approach.

1991

We extend some recent Ishock capturing methodsR designed to solve nonlinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws and which avoid the use of artifical viscosity for treating strong discontinuities to a relativistic hydrodynamics system of equations. Some standard shock-tube problems and radial accretion onto a Schwarzschild black hole are used to calibrate our code.

Local BRST cohomology in gauge theories

2000

The general solution of the anomaly consistency condition (Wess-Zumino equation) has been found recently for Yang-Mills gauge theory. The general form of the counterterms arising in the renormalization of gauge invariant operators (Kluberg-Stern and Zuber conjecture) and in gauge theories of the Yang-Mills type with non power counting renormalizable couplings has also been worked out in any number of spacetime dimensions. This Physics Report is devoted to reviewing in a self-contained manner these results and their proofs. This involves computing cohomology groups of the differential introduced by Becchi, Rouet, Stora and Tyutin, with the sources of the BRST variations of the fields ("antif…

Kadanoff-Baym approach to time-dependent quantum transport in AC and DC fields

2010

We have developed a method based on the embedded Kadanoff-Baym equations to study the time evolution of open and inhomogeneous systems. The equation of motion for the Green's function on the Keldysh contour is solved using different conserving many-body approximations for the self-energy. Our formulation incorporates basic conservation laws, such as particle conservation, and includes both initial correlations and initial embedding effects, without restrictions on the time-dependence of the external driving field. We present results for the time-dependent density, current and dipole moment for a correlated tight binding chain connected to one-dimensional non-interacting leads exposed to DC …
