An introduction to relativistic hydrodynamics

2007

We review formulations of the equations of (inviscid) general relativistic hydrodynamics and (ideal) magnetohydrodynamics, along with methods for their numerical solution. Both systems can be cast as first-order, hyperbolic systems of conservation laws, following the explicit choice of an Eulerian observer and suitable fluid and magnetic field variables. During the last fifteen years, the so-called (upwind) high-resolution shock-capturing schemes based on Riemann solvers have been successfully extended from classical to relativistic fluid dynamics, both special and general. Nowadays, general relativistic hydrodynamical simulations in relativistic astrophysics are routinely performed, partic…

Mathematical Issues in a Fully-Constrained Formulation of Einstein Equations

2008

Bonazzola, Gourgoulhon, Grandcl\'ement, and Novak [Phys. Rev. D {\bf 70}, 104007 (2004)] proposed a new formulation for 3+1 numerical relativity. Einstein equations result, according to that formalism, in a coupled elliptic-hyperbolic system. We have carried out a preliminary analysis of the mathematical structure of that system, in particular focusing on the equations governing the evolution for the deviation of a conformal metric from a flat fiducial one. The choice of a Dirac's gauge for the spatial coordinates guarantees the mathematical characterization of that system as a (strongly) hyperbolic system of conservation laws. In the presence of boundaries, this characterization also depen…

Neutrino masses and mixing in A(4) models with three Higgs doublets

2013

We study neutrino masses and mixing in the context of flavor models with A(4) symmetry, three scalar doublets in the triplet representation, and three lepton families. We show that there is no representation assignment that yields a dimension-5 mass operator consistent with experiment. We then consider a type-I seesaw with three heavy right-handed neutrinos, explaining in detail why it fails, and allowing us to show that agreement with the present neutrino oscillation data can be recovered with the inclusion of dimension-3 heavy neutrino mass terms that break softly the A(4) symmetry.

Rapidity dependence of particle production in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions

2002

We compute the rapidity dependence of particle and transverse energy production in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions at various beam energies and atomic numbers using the perturbative QCD + saturation model. The distribution is a broad gaussian near $y=0$ but the rapid increase of particle production with the beam energy will via energy conservation strongly constrain the rapidity distribution at large $y$.

Spectra and correlations of Λ andΛ¯produced in 340-GeV/cΣ−+Cand 260-GeV/cn+Cinteractions

2002

We have measured the production of strange baryons and antibaryons in 340-GeV/c Sigma /sup -/+C and 260-GeV/c n+C interactions. The single x/sub F/ distributions show the expected leading particle effect, and the single p/sub t//sup 2/ distributions show a distinct nonthermal behavior. The x/sub F/ distributions of Lambda - Lambda pairs indicate two different phase space distributions for the two coincident baryons. On the other hand two Lambda 's show identical distributions. Momentum conservation during the formation process may represent a significant source for the observed behavior.

An experiment on wind energy

2012

We discuss an experiment on wind energy performed with home-made apparatus. The experiment reproduces a laboratory windmill, which can pump water from a lower level to a higher one. By measuring the gain of the gravitational potential energy of the pumped water, one can determine the power extracted from the wind. The activity was carried out with high-school students, in the framework of the Italian National Plan for Scientific Degrees-Physics. The proposed experiment allows teachers to discuss renewable energy sources with students whose knowledge of physics is limited to mechanics. It gives students the possibility to gain experience with energy and to increase their awareness of this re…

ESP

Teaching energy conservation as a unifying principle in physics

2009

In this work we present the design and assessment of a teaching sequence aimed at introducing the principle of energy conservation at post-compulsory secondary school level (16-18 year olds). The proposal is based on the result of research into teaching-learning difficulties and on the analysis of the physics framework. Evidence is shown that this teaching sequence, together with the methodology used in the classroom, may result in students having a better grasp of the principle of energy conservation. A numerical study of postshock oscillations in slowly moving shock waves

2003

Abstract Godunov-type methods and other shock capturing schemes can display pathological behavior in certain flow situations. This paper discusses the numerical anomaly associated to slowly moving shocks. We present a series of numerical experiments that illustrate the formation and propagation of this pathology, and allows us to establish some conclusions and question some previous conjectures for the source of the numerical noise. A simple diagnosis on an explicit Steger-Warming scheme shows that some intermediate states in the first time steps deviate from the true direction and contaminate the flow structure. A remedy is presented in the form of a new flux split method with an entropy i…
