Paradoxes of postmodern tourists and innovation in tourism marketing

Innovation challenges tourism experiences in a new digitalized era. The new scenario is showing some paradoxical changes that lead to new approaches for tourism production, distribution, and financing. This chapter focuses on innovation in marketing, involving market processes, new changes in tourist behavior and new approaches adopted by companies to face new trends. An emphasis is given to service innovation in tourism, with a special focus on companies, tourist destinations, and the digital environment. Likewise, the chapter examines a series of paradoxes of postmodern tourists and how companies develop new products and services to try to address them.

Why are consumers increasingly participating in alternative food chains to co-produce and distribute foods with farmers? In this paper, values and food-related lifestyles, as well as transaction costs and socio-demographics, are used to analyze consumer participation in alternative food chains in Italy. Using a simultaneous system of equations, a model with instrumental variables is implemented to measure the relationships between values and food-related lifestyles, and between the latter and participation in an alternative food chain. Relationship marketing is based on the establishment and maintenance of continuous relationships between buyer and seller as a source of mutual benefits. Following this approach, customers' evaluations of benefits and monetary and non-monetary sacrifices derived from their relationships with the retailer are crucial for the existence of ongoing and successful relationships. Such a perception may, however, vary greatly depending on the type of service provided.
