A laboratory experiment on inferring Poiseuille's law for undergraduate students

In this paper a laboratory experiment is proposed to infer Poiseuille's law. A simple set-up based on two flasks joined by a detachable tube allows one to measure using tubes of different radii and different lengths. One of the flasks is connected to a vacuum pump to control the pressure differential between the tube extremes. The influence on the flow of different radii, lengths, pressures and viscosities can be studied in a didactic way by measuring the flow rate for each of these variables. Light weight, thin plastic foil, X-ray telescopes

We present results from a program to develop an X-ray telescope made from thin plastic shells. Our initial results have been obtained from multi-shell cylindrical lenses that are used in a point-to-point configuration to image the small focal spot of a an X-ray tube on a microchannel plate detector. We describe the steps that led up to the present design and present data from the tests that have been used to identify the properties of the plastic material that make it a suitable X-ray reflector. Stochastic description of traffic breakdown

We present a comparison of nucleation in an isothermal-isochoric container with traffic congestion on a one-lane freeway. The analysis is based, in both cases, on the probabilistic description by stochastic master equations. Further we analyze the characteristic features of traffic breakdowns. To describe this phenomenon we apply the stochastic model regarding the jam emergence to the formation of a large car cluster on the highway.

Selective recognition of small hydrogen bond acceptors by a calix[6]arene-based molecular container

2019

Selective molecular recognition is of primary importance for applications such as sensing and separation of chemicals. This work describes the host-guest and crystallisation properties of a penta-carbamated calix[6]arene designed as a molecular container with a H-donating recognition group directed towards the heart of the cavity. As demonstrated by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction studies, this macrocyclic receptor can selectively recognise small H-bond acceptors through one or two hydrogen bonds, the guests nesting inside the polyaromatic cavity surrounded by eleven bulky tert-butyl groups.

An Information Aggregation and Analytics System for ATLAS Frontier

International audience; ATLAS event processing requires access to centralized database systems where information about calibrations, detector status and data-taking conditions are stored. This processing is done on more than 150 computing sites on a world-wide computing grid which are able to access the database using the Squid-Frontier system. Some processing workflows have been found which overload the Frontier system due to the Conditions data model currently in use, specifically because some of the Conditions data requests have been found to have a low caching efficiency. Design of the Tube Roll Forming Process Through an Heuristic Algorithm

In the paper the design of an industrial tube roll forming process is developed utilizing an heuristic algorithm, namely the simulated annealing (SA). In particular both the number and the shape of the deforming rolls are determined in order to define the forming sequence. The effectiveness of the results supplied by the SA algorithm is verified both by means of some experiments tests carried out on an industrial tube roll forming equipment and through a set of numerical simulations of the process.

A Maximal-Space Algorithm for the Container Loading Problem

In this paper, a greedy randomized adaptive search procedure (GRASP) for the container loading problem is presented. This approach is based on a constructive block heuristic that builds upon the concept of maximal space, a nondisjoint representation of the free space in a container. This new algorithm is extensively tested over the complete set of Bischoff and Ratcliff problems [Bischoff, E. E., M. S. W. Ratcliff. 1995. Evaluation of subsurface drip irrigation emitters on a split-root container-grown citrus rootstock (citrange ‘Ccarrizo’)

Among irrigation systems, subsurface drip irrigation allows obtaining values of water use efficiency higher than 90%. However, when emitters are installed below the soil surface, root intrusion can represent the main cause of emitter occlusion. To prevent this phenomenon, manufacturers normally include herbicides in the plastic matrix of the emitters.
