Crossing Boundaries: Bodily Paradigms in Jeanette Winterson’s Fiction 1985-2000

Since the publication of her first novel, Jeanette Winterson has been acclaimed as one of the most promising writers on the English postmodern literary scene. This study takes into consideration seven works, from Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit (1985) to The PowerBook (2000) in which Winterson codifies bodies as culturally constructed signs which can be re-signified and transformed. The strategies she adopts to remodel the body reveal a narrative itinerary that goes from the assertion of the lesbian body of the protagonist in Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit to the virtual bodies of the interactive world in The PowerBook. Phantom/liminal fat and feminist theories of the body

This article brings together two concepts, ‘phantom fat’ and ‘liminal fat’, which both aim to grasp how fat in contemporary culture becomes a kind of material immateriality, corporeality in suspension. Comparing the spheres of representation and experience, we examine the challenges and usefulness of these concepts, and feminist fat studies perspectives more broadly, to feminist scholarship on the body. We ask what connects and disconnects fat corporeality and fat studies from ways of theorising other embodied differences, like gender, ‘race’, disability, class and sexuality, especially when thinking through their perceived mutability or removability, and assumptions about their relevance …

ANTI – Contemporary Art Festival on kansainvälinen aika- ja paikkasidonnaisen nykytaiteen festivaali Kuopiossa. Festivaali syntyi vuonna 2002 aktivoimaan kaupunkitiloja taideteosten avulla. Alkuperäisestä 12 teospaikan rakenteesta festivaali on muuttunut sosiaalisempaan ja dialogisempaan suuntaan reflektoiden toisaalta taiteen sosiaalista käännettä ja toisaalta aktiivisen kulttuurisen osallistumisen käytäntöjä. Tässä artikkelissa tarkastelen taiteen sosiaalisuutta ja osallistumisen mahdollisuuksia ANTI-festivaalilla ja pohdin niiden merkityksiä yleisöille ja kaupungille. The subject of the reflections set out in this article are the issues relating to the subjectivity of a teacher and his competence in the face of civilizing changes. As the title suggests, the study deals with the diversified division of competences both of contemporary man and the teacher. Professional training of educators should include both a grounding in theory and assertions on the subject of man’s development, processes of “finding one’s place” naturally in the world, process educating man with a defined goal (education and upbringing) and processes of his socialization (collectivisation - full time employment - nationalization - politicization - globalization).
