Bridging the Gap between Advanced Distributed Teaching and the Use of Learning Management Systems in the University Context
2007
The selection of appropriate learning management system (LMS) is critical for supporting advanced distributed teaching. A survey was targeted for understanding the features that the LMS offer for university teachers and to find if the advanced features of the LMS were utilized, The findings imply that there is a gap between the LMS tools for advanced distributed teaching and their use in the university context. The teachers using LMS were also found to be heterogeneous by their computer skills and LMS uses.
Challenges in the Redesign of Content Management
2005
The Finnish Centre for Pensions (FCP) is a government organization acting as the central body for private pension institutions in Finland. One of its central tasks is to produce and publish guideline documents for ensuring that the pension institutions carry out pension provisioning in a unified way. Due to problems in the maintenance of the documents and requests for faster information delivery by the Internet, FCP carried out a content management development initiative during 2002-2004. The case follows the changes in components of the content management environment: in the activities of work processes, actor roles, systems, and content items. The case shows that in content management red…
Content Management in Organizations
2005
Content management may be characterized as “a variety of tools and methods that are used together to collect, process, and deliver content of diverse types” (McIntosh, 2000, p. 1). At least three differing approaches on content management may be identified: 1) Web content management, 2) Document management, and 3) Utilization of structured documents.
Analysing Requirements for Content Mangement
2006
The content to be managed in organisations is in textual or multimedia formats. Major part of the content is, however, stored in documents. In order to find out the needs of the people and organisations producing and using the content a profound requirements analysis is needed. In the paper, a novel method for the requirements analysis for content management purposes is introduced. The method combines different techniques from two existing methods, which were used in various content management development projects. The paper also describes a case study where the new method is exploited.
Crossing Borders: An Online Interdisciplinary Course in Health Informatics for Students From Two Countries.
2017
A cross-countries and interprofessional novel approach for delivering an international interdisciplinary graduate health informatics course online is presented. Included in this discussion are the challenges, lessons learned, and pedagogical recommendations from the experiences of teaching the course. Four professors from three different fields and from three universities collaborated in offering an international health informatics course for an interdisciplinary group of 18 US and seven Norwegian students. Highly motivated students and professors, an online technology infrastructure that supported asynchronously communication and course delivery, the ability to adapt the curriculum to meet…
Corporate User Representatives and the Dialectics of Enterprise Systems: A Quest for Social Actors with Political Skill
2008
Enterprise system implementations may be viewed as dialectics of adaptation. To reach a synthesis, a corporate user representative role is important. This paper addresses the question of who would be suitable for the role as a corporate user representative, i.e. what is required to fill the role. Drawing on an in-depth interpretive study from the oil industry, this paper contributes by augmenting our view of the corporate user representative as a multidimensional social actor. The case is from an innovative integration of ECM with collaboration technology. With a state-of-the-art combination of technologies, the task of representing 26.000 users proved to be a challenge. Based on longitudin…
Semantic sense extraction from Wikipedia pages
2010
This paper presents a technique aimed to extract structured information from unstructured Wikipedia contents related to a particular topic, and to arrange it in a semantic way inside an ontology. The general framework is the design of an artificial agent able to deliberate when increasing its domain knowledge. In particular, this cognitive agent acts as a dialogue manager in an Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) already presented by the authors. Our approach is based on the definition of useful patterns able to extract and identify novel concepts and relations to be added to the knowledge base. We propose a method that uses information from the wiki page’s structure. We define different stra…
Mobile Interface for Content-Based Image Management
2010
People make more and more use of digital image acquisition devices to capture screenshots of their everyday life. The growing number of personal pictures raise the problem of their classification. Some of the authors proposed an automatic technique for personal photo album management dealing with multiple aspects (i. e., people, time and background) in a homogenous way. In this paper we discuss a solution that allows mobile users to remotely access such technique by means of their mobile phones, almost from everywhere, in a pervasive fashion. This allows users to classify pictures they store on their devices. The whole solution is presented, with particular regard to the user interface impl…
The eXtensible Dynamic Presentation Manager for content adaptation
2008
Human Computer Interaction studies deals with systems and tools that are able to improve user experience during interaction with computer. For this purpose, modern web application are expected to supply multimodal and multi-channel access, adaptivity and transcoding features. We will present in this work the eXtensible Dynamic Presentation Manager (XDPM) which is a set of innovative tools that support the eXtensible Presentation Language (XPL) in the adaptation of contents to different working contexts. The adaptation is performed according to the delivery context information which have been formalized by means of a profiler system. A profile holds information about the specific access devi…
Tīmekļa vietnes satura pārvaldība darbinieku nomas uzņēmumā "ERCON"
2021
