MIPPIE: the mouse integrated protein–protein interaction reference
2020
Abstract Cells operate and react to environmental signals thanks to a complex network of protein–protein interactions (PPIs), the malfunction of which can severely disrupt cellular homeostasis. As a result, mapping and analyzing protein networks are key to advancing our understanding of biological processes and diseases. An invaluable part of these endeavors has been the house mouse (Mus musculus), the mammalian model organism par excellence, which has provided insights into human biology and disorders. The importance of investigating PPI networks in the context of mouse prompted us to develop the Mouse Integrated Protein–Protein Interaction rEference (MIPPIE). MIPPIE inherits a robust infr…
Interactive Pansharpening and Active Classification in Remote Sensing
2013
This chapter presents two multimodal prototypes for remote sensing image classification where user interaction is an important part of the system. The first one applies pansharpening techniques to fuse a panchromatic image and a multispectral image of the same scene to obtain a high resolution (HR) multispectral image. Once the HR image has been classified the user can interact with the system to select a class of interest. The pansharpening parameters are then modified to increase the system accuracy for the selected class without deteriorating the performance of the classifier on the other classes. The second prototype utilizes Bayesian modeling and inference to implement active learning …
Innovations and ecosystems : a characterization of Smart Tampere innovation ecosystem
2019
Master's thesis Innovative governance and public management ME523 - University of Agder 2019 The following thesis focuses on innovation ecosystem. As described in thefirst section, innovations are of great importance for tackling global challenges such as climate change andthus,of relevancy for the regional economic development. The growing importance of innovationshas motivated numerous new approaches to innovation management, especiallyin the last years the approach ofinnovation ecosystem. In the secondsection, the concept of innovation ecosystem is introduced and the most relevantconcepts from the literature are discussed. It thereby compares innovation ecosystem to other concepts such as…
Role of Marketing and Technological Innovation on Satisfaction and Word of Mouth in Retailing
2017
Despite the importance of innovation in business performance, investigation into innovation in services is scanty and lacking consensus. In retailing, it is a topic that has been awakening considerable academic and business interest in recent years. In this study context, this work analyses innovation in retail experiences from two aspects—marketing innovation and technological innovation—to understand the role it exercises in satisfaction and subsequent recommendation. For that purpose, our objective is to investigate the direct and indirect influence of marketing and technological innovation on satisfaction and word of mouth through three core constructs: store image, consumer value, and …
Information Technology Issues in Finland
2020
Information technology (IT) industry is essential in Finland because of its significant export contribution, extensive workforce, and research and innovation contributions. This chapter highlights key issues in this important industry. For instance, IT reliability and efficiency are the top issues necessary for the Finnish IT industry’s competitiveness in a global context. Furthermore, business intelligence and analytics tools, techniques and skills are central to the Finnish IT industry. The industry has a very experienced workforce that is however aging and thus there is a need for training of young personnel to join the industry. Generally, the Finnish IT workers are satisfied with their…
Informal learning contexts in the construction of physical education student teachers’ professional identity
2022
This study aimed to investigate the significance of informal learning contexts in physical education (PE) student teachers’ professional identity construction. It addressed two research questions: How do informal learning contexts contribute to the construction of PE student teachers’ professional identity? What forms of relationships can be identified between the informal and formal contexts of learning in PE student teachers’ professional identity construction? The data consisted of 20 semi-structured interviews with PE student teachers during the final teaching practice period. The data were analysed using structural and pattern coding methods. The analysis revealed that informal learnin…
Integrative Pedagogy in Practicum
2011
The chapter introduces a model of integrative pedagogy in teaching practicum within a Finnish context. The aim of this action research project is to integrate educational theory and practice in teaching practicum with a view to promote student teachers professional autonomy. In the Integrative Pedagogy Model, theoretical knowledge, practical skills and self-regulation (reflective and metacognitive skills) are merged. The empirical part of the chapter is based on the content analysis of the experiences of students and their supervising teachers. The results show that an exceptional sense of community is being achieved in this kind of teaching practicum.
Conceptualizations of Cyberchondria and Relations to the Anxiety Spectrum: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
2021
Background Cyberchondria describes the detrimental effects of health-related internet use. Current conceptualizations agree that cyberchondria is associated with anxiety-related pathologies and may best be conceptualized as a safety behavior; however, little is known about its exact underlying mechanisms. Objective This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to give an overview of the conceptualizations of cyberchondria and its relation to anxiety-related pathologies, quantify the strength of association to health anxiety by using meta-analyses, highlight gaps in the literature, and outline a hypothetical integrative cognitive-behavioral model of cyberchondria based on the available empi…
Conceptualization and Examination of Success Factors in the Banking System
2016
Abstract Banking competition has intensified in recent years, largely due to globalization, technological process and economic instability. The banking system in this context is supplied with considerable challenges, with customers’ characteristics, needs and desires consistent with the current environment (globalization, technological change and economic crisis). It is necessary to identify those features that contribute to the development of competitive advantage. In this sense, this paper shows the results of the analysis of success factors in the banking system. To obtain the results the following methods were used: in-depth questionnaire (for experts), questionnaire (for customers), ob…
Impact of the Agent’s Environment on Discretion in the Field of EU Conflict Resolution
2017
Employing an agent–principal perspective on EU conflict resolution and focusing on the politics of discretion, we argue that the context in which the agent acts affects the principal–agent relation. Our conceptualization draws on the agent’s actions as a source of discretion, which can be either an unintentional product of the characteristics of the external environment in which the agent performs (structure-induced discretion) or a product of intentionally pursued agent action (interest-induced discretion). Focusing particularly on the European External Action Service, we find that the agent can exploit urgency and third party interplay as characteristics of EU conflict resolution in order…
