Searching for hexagonal analogues of the half-metallic half-Heusler XYZ compounds
2008
The XYZ half-Heusler crystal structure can conveniently be described as a tetrahedral zinc blende YZ structure which is stuffed by a slightly ionic X species. This description is well suited to understand the electronic structure of semiconducting 8-electron compounds such as LiAlSi (formulated Li$^+$[AlSi]$^-$) or semiconducting 18-electron compounds such as TiCoSb (formulated Ti$^{4+}$[CoSb]$^{4-}$). The basis for this is that [AlSi]$^-$ (with the same electron count as Si$_2$) and [CoSb]$^{4-}$ (the same electron count as GaSb), are both structurally and electronically, zinc-blende semiconductors. The electronic structure of half-metallic ferromagnets in this structure type can then be d…
Reconstruction of an effective magnon mean free path distribution from spin Seebeck measurements in thin films
2017
A thorough understanding of the mean-free-path (MFP) distribution of the energy carriers is crucial to engineer and tune the transport properties of materials. In this context, a significant body of work has investigated the phonon and electron MFP distribution, however, similar studies of the magnon MFP distribution have not been carried out so far. In this work, we used thickness-dependence measurements of the longitudinal spin Seebeck (LSSE) effect of yttrium iron garnet films to reconstruct the cumulative distribution of a SSE related effective magnon MFP. By using the experimental data reported by Guo et al. [Phys. Rev. X 6, 031012 (2016)], we adapted the phonon MFP reconstruction algo…
Pattern Formation During Dry Corrosion of Metals and Alloys
1987
About corrosion of metals and alloys, many exciting problems are not entirely solved. One of them concerns some morphological features such as, for example, stratified periodic structures that may appear, for example during the oxidation or sulfidation of metals and alloys. In this context, a high temperature corrosion kinetics is interpreted in terms of a bistable chemical system which can oscillate spontaneously if a feedback effect could exist. Some models analyse these patterning from a theoretical point of view. Stability analyses of the uniform standard steady state point out that it can be unstable by bifurcation and give rise to multilayered scales. Some non linearities, peculiar to…
Exact Numerical Treatment of Finite Quantum Systems Using Leading-Edge Supercomputers
2005
Using exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group techniques a finite-size scaling study in the context of the Peierls-insulator Mott-insulator transition is presented. Program implementation on modern supercomputers and performance aspects are discussed.
Searches for neutral Higgs bosons in e+e− collisions at centre-of-mass energies from 192 to 202 GeV
2000
Searches for neutral Higgs bosons are performed with the 237 pb-1 of data collected in 1999 by the ALEPH detector at LEP, for centre-of-mass energies between 191.6 and 201.6 GeV. These searches apply to Higgs bosons within the context of the Standard Model and its minimal supersymmetric extension (MSSM) as well as to invisibly decaying Higgs bosons. No evidence of a signal is seen. A lower limit on the mass of the Standard Model Higgs boson of 107.7 GeV/c2 at 95% confidence level is set. In the MSSM, lower limits of 91.2 and 91.6 GeV/c2 are derived for the masses of the neutral Higgs bosons h and A, respectively. For a Higgs boson decaying invisibly and produced with the Standard Model cros…
Polyoxometalates: From Magnetic Models to Multifunctional Materials
2002
In this article we have presented some recent achievements of the polyoxometalates in the fields of molecular magnetism and functional molecular materials. In the context of the molecular magnetism we have shown that POMs provide ideal examples of magnetic clusters with coexisting ferro and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions which can be investigated using a variety of magnetic techniques, including the Inelastic Neutron Scattering spectroscopy, to get a thorough characterization of the magnetic levels in these large clusters, and to test the validity of the spin hamiltonians commonly used in magnetism.
Metal artifact reduction in x-ray computed tomography: Inpainting versus missing value
2011
A comparison of algorithms for reduction of metal artifacts in x-ray cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is presented. In the context of algebraic reconstruction techniques (ART) several inpainting algorithms in the image domain are evaluated against missing data strategies. A GPU-based iterative framework is employed for a meaningful comparison of both. Simulation results from an extended Shepp-Logan phantom and real world dental data are given.
What monomeric nucleotide binding domains can teach us about dimeric ABC proteins
2020
The classic conceptualization of ATP binding cassette (ABC) transporter function is an ATP-dependent conformational change coupled to transport of a substrate across a biological membrane via the transmembrane domains (TMDs). The binding of two ATP molecules within the transporter's two nucleotide binding domains (NBDs) induces their dimerization. Despite retaining the ability to bind nucleotides, isolated NBDs frequently fail to dimerize. ABC proteins without a TMD, for example ABCE and ABCF, have NBDs tethered via elaborate linkers, further supporting that NBD dimerization does not readily occur for isolated NBDs. Intriguingly, even in full-length transporters, the NBD-dimerized, outward-…
Evidence for Conformational Mechanism on the Binding of TgMIC4 with β-Galactose-Containing Carbohydrate Ligand
2015
A deeper understanding of the role of sialic/desialylated groups during TgMIC4-glycoproteins interactions has importance to better clarify the odd process of host cell invasion by members of the apicomplexan phylum. Within this context, we evaluated the interaction established by recombinant TgMIC4 (the whole molecule) with sialylated (bovine fetuin) and desialylated (asialofetuin) glycoproteins by using functionalized quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D). A suitable receptive surface containing recombinant TgMIC4 for monitoring β-galactose-containing carbohydrate ligand (limit of quantification ∼ 40 μM) was designed and used as biomolecular recognition platform t…
