This article wants to be a close reading of La Victoria, Federica Montseny’s novel published in 1925, in order to achieve two objectives: on the one hand, to break down the cliches that normally appear in Montseny’s work –her “revolutionary melodrama”- as a perfect example of the eternal “ethic-aesthetic” paradox and, on the other hand, to point out the capability of this kind of study to dynamize the so-called “women’s literature” in the context of the XX Century Spanish literature.
Campo y ciudad en la España de Fin de siglo: una lectura simmeliana de El árbol de la ciencia (1911) de Pío Baroja
2013
The aim of this paper is to reconstruct the dialectical relationship between the countryside and the city —taking the case of Madrid as an example— and in turn Spain at the end of the 19th century from the reading of Pio Baroja’s novel El arbol de la ciencia (1911). To do this, I try to locate the reader in the historical context of the period to then proceed with the analysis of the Barojian view of the relationship between the countryside and the city, taking the personal trajectory of Andres Hurtado, the autobiographical main character of this novel, as a paradigmatic case.
A Valencian-style Coalition Government: el Botànic
2020
Coalition governments are common in the European political landscape in various tiers ofgovernment. However, such coalitions were an exception in the history of the Valencian Autonomy until 2015, which marked a new stage with the so-called El Botànic governments. Which factors explain this change in the Valencian political system? What are the features of such coalition governments? Can this model be applied to other political systems? This paper addresses these and other issues. First, it looks at what led to coalition governments in both 2015 and 2019. Second, it studies the model of coalition government. The hypothesis tested is this: El Botànic is a coalition government whose success in…

En el presente artículo nos proponemos reflexionar sobre los Coloquios Latinoamericanos de Fotografía que tuvieron lugar entre los años 1978 y 1996, en los que se buscó definir y categorizar a la fotografía latinoamericana. Remembering and Forgetting, Discovering and Cherishing
2018
The events of the Second World War left considerable material remains in Finnish Lapland, ranging from the remnants of structures that were destroyed in the 1944–45 Lapland War, through to small, portable objects connected to soldiers, prisoners of war and civilians. These material remains have variously been saved and cherished by survivors and their families, disregarded as ‘war junk’, ‘discovered’ by hobbyists exploring the landscape, amassed and exchanged by private collectors, and accessioned into official museum collections. These various processes represent transformations of material culture to take on various meanings and embodiments, depending on the different individuals and orga…
Fashion and Eroticism Men's Underwear in the Context of Eroticism
2001
What is the process when historically obviously neutral things are becoming loaded with mental meanings, associations and qualities, getting a new turn of expression? The article deals with the changing of men’s underwear from garments of pure utility to high fashionable, visible things. The context in which the change has taken place, the language which supports the new meanings, the forms, colours and use of the “unmentionable” are studied from an ethnological viewpoint. The author emphasises the aspects of new adaptations of the meaning of fashion in relation to changing gender roles, new ideals of the body and new mechanisms in consumer culture.
Post memory and cinematic affect in The Midwife
2017
The Second World War has proved a rich source of inspiration for fiction films worldwide. The Finnish fiction film The Midwife (Kätilö, Antti J. Jokinen, 2015) is aimed at an international audience with a story that takes place in the context of the Lapland War in Finland in 1944. The film tells of a romantic relationship between a local woman and a member of the German army, in a highly affective manner. This article argues that the film downplays elements that might have interested the national, or local, audience, and that it privileges affect over knowledge. To bring out the film’s transnational character, the article begins by analysing it in the context of national, or local, and glob…
