Incidence, Predictive Factors, and Prognostic Impact of Silent Atrial Fibrillation After Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation.

New onset atrial fibrillation post-transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is common and is associated with adverse outcomes. However, silent atrial fibrillation (AF) is poorly documented in the context. This study sought to evaluate the incidence, predictive factors, and prognostic value of Silent AF post-TAVI. All the consecutive patients with TAVI were prospectively analyzed by continuous electrocardiogram monitoring≥48 hours after implantation. Silent AF was defined as asymptomatic episodes lasting at least 30 seconds. The population was divided into 3 groups: history of AF, no-AF, and silent AF. The role of minimal access valve surgery in the elderly. A meta-analysis of observational studies

Background Minimal access valve surgery, both mitral and aortic, may be related to improvement in specific post-operative outcomes, therefore may be beneficial for the subgroup of the elderly referred for valve surgery. Methods A systematic literature review identified several different studies, of which 6 fulfilled criteria for meta-analysis. The pea aphid phylome: a complete catalogue of evolutionary histories and arthropod orthology and paralogy relationships for Acyrthosiphon pisum genes

Phylogenetic analyses serve many purposes, including the establishment of orthology relationships, the prediction of protein function and the detection of important evolutionary events. Within the context of the sequencing of the genome of the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum, we undertook a phylogenetic analysis for every protein of this species. The resulting phylome includes the evolutionary relationships of all predicted aphid proteins and their homologues among 13 other fully-sequenced arthropods and three out-group species. Numerical Study of Blow-Up Mechanisms for Davey-Stewartson II Systems

We present a detailed numerical study of various blow-up issues in the context of the focusing Davey-Stewartson II equation. To this end we study Gaussian initial data and perturbations of the lump and the explicit blow-up solution due to Ozawa. Based on the numerical results it is conjectured that the blow-up in all cases is self similar, and that the time dependent scaling is as in the Ozawa solution and not as in the stable blow-up of standard $L^{2}$ critical nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations. The blow-up profile is given by a dynamically rescaled lump.

Contrasting probabilistic and anti-optimization approaches in an applied mechanics problem

Probabilistic and non-probabilistic, anti-optimization analyses of uncertainty are contrasted in this study. Specifically, the comparison of these two competing approaches is conducted for an uniform column, with initial geometric imperfection, subjected to an impact axial load. The reliability of the column is derived for the cases when the initial imperfections posses either (a) uniform probability density, (b) truncated exponential density or (c) generic truncated probability density.
