Change in weight and central obesity by positive airway pressure treatment in obstructive sleep apnea patients: Longitudinal data from the European S…

2017

Introduction: The effect of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment on body weight and central obesity in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients is still unclear. Objectives: We aimed to study body composition change during CPAP treatment in the European Sleep Apnea Database (ESADA). Methods: OSA patients with a CPAP treatment follow-up time of more than 30 days in the ESADA registry were selected (n=2015). Body mass index (BMI), body weight, waist-, hip- and neck-circumferences were assessed at baseline and follow-up (median [interquartile range], 242 [380] days). Predictors for body composition changes with CPAP were analyzed adjusting for confounders. Results: Overall, there…

A Decision support system for sustainable operations management in small power plants

2014

The importance of environmentally-friendly electricity production is recognized as one of the most important challenges of our future, covering a broad context of research topics and promoting future scenarios based on renewable energies and new technologies. In the short term, however, energy generation will still be largely relying on power plants fired with fossil fuels whose emissions of pollutants are regulated by the industrial emissions directive in the EU legislation. Such directive does not apply to small and medium combustion plants, which until now, have only been subject to national regulations. As part of its air quality package from December 2013, the EU Commission has propose…

Protocol of a multicenter international randomized controlled manikin study on different protocols of cardiopulmonary resuscitation for laypeople (MA…

2018

IntroductionOut-of-hospital cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in industrialised countries. Survival depends on prompt identification of cardiac arrest and on the quality and timing of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation. For laypeople, there has been a growing interest on hands-only CPR, meaning continuous chest compression without interruption to perform ventilations. It has been demonstrated that intentional interruptions in hands-only CPR can increase its quality. The aim of this randomised trial is to compare three CPR protocols performed with different intentional interruptions with hands-only CPR.Methods and analysisThis is a prospective randomise…

Lower semicontinuity of weak supersolutions to the porous medium equation

2013

Weak supersolutions to the porous medium equation are defined by means of smooth test functions under an integral sign. We show that nonnegative weak supersolutions become lower semicontinuous after redefinition on a set of measure zero. This shows that weak supersolutions belong to a class of supersolutions defined by a comparison principle.

Upper bounds for the tightness of the $$G_\delta $$-topology

2021

We prove that if X is a regular space with no uncountable free sequences, then the tightness of its $$G_\delta $$ topology is at most the continuum and if X is, in addition, assumed to be Lindelof then its $$G_\delta $$ topology contains no free sequences of length larger then the continuum. We also show that, surprisingly, the higher cardinal generalization of our theorem does not hold, by constructing a regular space with no free sequences of length larger than $$\omega _1$$ , but whose $$G_\delta $$ topology can have arbitrarily large tightness.

Soggetto in quanto corpo

2016

According to Anders, technology replaces human body, in fact it is more powerful than physicality which can’t be shaped. Technology imposes itself on human body while human beings are ashamed of their one. Reduction of the body destroys humanity of human being and its scale of values. According to Heidegger, the vocation of technology is to impose itself and to be independent from man, but it supports life and nature. Even neurobiology offers a duality between higher cognitive activities of mind and the part of the brain connected to emotions. Both technology and higher activity of mind seem to propose a transcendence of the body. But the aesthetic fruition of photography reconfigures human…

Selective Sacral Nerve Blockade for the Treatment of Unstable Bladders

1987

38 patients with severe urge or urge incontinence, who did not respond to conservative therapy, were treated with selective sacral nerve blockade using a local anesthetic (bupivacaine). 6 patients of this group had definite selective sacral denervation with phenol. In 31 patients a urodynamic study was done previous to the sacral nerve block as well as 10 and 90 min after the injection. Within the first 2-7 weeks the success rate was about 70% in regard to bladder capacity and mean volume at first desire to void. On long-term follow-up (greater than 7 months), the success rate decreased to about 16%. Only 1 patient of the phenol group still has complete detrusor areflexia for now more than …

Influence of15N enrichment on the net isotopic fractionation factor during the reduction of nitrate to nitrous oxide in soil

2007

5 pages; International audience; Nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas, is mainly emitted from soils during the denitrification process. Nitrogen stable-isotope investigations can help to characterise the N(2)O source and N(2)O production mechanisms. The stable-isotope approach is increasingly used with (15)N natural abundance or relatively low (15)N enrichment levels and requires a good knowledge of the isotopic fractionation effect inherent to this biological mechanism. This paper reports the measurement of the net and instantaneous isotopic fractionation factor (alpha(s/p) (i)) during the denitrification of NO(3) (-) to N(2)O over a range of (15)N substrate enrichments (0.37 to 1.00 atom% (15)…

Multi-level coupled cluster theory

2014

We present a general formalism where different levels of coupled cluster theory can be applied to different parts of the molecular system. The system is partitioned into subsystems by Cholesky decomposition of the one-electron Hartree-Fock density matrix. In this way the system can be divided across chemical bonds without discontinuities arising. The coupled cluster wave function is defined in terms of cluster operators for each part and these are determined from a set of coupled equations. The total wave function fulfills the Pauli-principle across all borders and levels of electron correlation. We develop the associated response theory for this multi-level coupled cluster theory and prese…
