Italian Association of Sleep Medicine (AIMS) position statement and guideline on the treatment of menopausal sleep disorders
2019
Insomnia, vasomotor symptoms (VMS) and depression often co-occur after the menopause, with consequent health problems and reductions in quality of life. The aim of this position statement is to provide evidence-based advice on the management of postmenopausal sleep disorders derived from a systematic review of the literature. The latter yielded results on VMS, insomnia, circadian rhythm disorders, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and restless leg syndrome (RLS). Overall, the studies show that menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) improves VMS, insomnia, and mood. Several antidepressants can improve insomnia, either on their own or in association with MHT; these include selective serotonin reuptake …
Impact of an oral appliance on obstructive sleep apnea severity, quality of life, and biomarkers
2017
OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS To investigate outcomes including efficacy, quality of life, and levels of inflammatory markers of a mandibular advancement device (MAD) for moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). STUDY DESIGN Case-control study. METHODS Patients with apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) ≥ 15/hr who only accepted MAD therapy (study group) or who refused any treatment (control group) were recruited. At baseline and at 6 months, polysomnography, Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), Functional Outcomes of Sleep Questionnaire (FOSQ), C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin 1β, interleukin 6, and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) were assessed in both groups. RESULTS At baseline, the study group (n …
Fuzzy filter design for discrete-time delayed systems with distributed probabilistic sensor faults
2013
In this paper, the problem of distributed fuzzy filter design has been solved for T-S fuzzy systems with time-varying delays and multiple probabilistic packet losses. Our attention is paid to designing the distributed fuzzy filters to guarantee the filtering error dynamic system to be mean-square asymptotically stable with an average ℋ∞ performance. Sufficient conditions for the obtained filtering error dynamic system are proposed by applying a comparison model and the scaled small gain theorem. Based on the measurements and estimates of the system states for each sensor and its neighbors, the solution of the parameters of the distributed fuzzy filters is characterized in terms of the feasi…
Locally Supported Wavelets on Manifolds with Applications to the 2D Sphere
1999
Abstract In this paper we present a construction principle for locally supported wavelets on manifolds once a multiresolution analysis is given. The wavelets provide a stable (or unconditional) basis for a scale of Sobolev spaces H s , 0 ≤ s ≤ s . We examine a fast wavelet transform with almost optimal complexity. For the two-dimensional sphere we construct a multiresolution analysis generated by continuous splines that are bilinear with respect to some special spherical grid. In our approach the poles are not exceptional points concerning the approximation power or the stability of the wavelet basis. Finally we present some numerical applications to singularity detection and the analysis o…
On the Hencl's notion of absolute continuity
2009
Abstract We prove that a slight modification of the notion of α-absolute continuity introduced in [D. Bongiorno, Absolutely continuous functions in R n , J. Math. Anal. Appl. 303 (2005) 119–134] is equivalent to the notion of n, λ-absolute continuity given by S. Hencl in [S. Hencl, On the notions of absolute continuity for functions of several variables, Fund. Math. 173 (2002) 175–189].
Position paper on the management of patients with obstructive sleep apnea and hypertension: joint recommendations by the European Society of Hyperten…
2012
This article is aimed at addressing the current state of the art in epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnostic procedures and treatment options for appropriate management of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in cardiovascular (particularly hypertensive) patients, as well as for the management of cardiovascular diseases (particularly arterial hypertension) in OSA patients. The present document is the result of the work done by a panel of experts participating in the European Union COST (COoperation in Scientific and Technological research) ACTION B26 on OSA, with the endorsement of the European Respiratory Society (ERS) and the European Society of Hypertension (ESH). These recommendations are par…
Existence of competitive equilibrium in a non-optimal one-sector economy without conditions on the distorted marginal product of capital
2012
Abstract This paper develops a method for proving the existence of competitive equilibrium in a distorted/non-optimal one-sector economy–a discrete time variant of the Romer model–without conditions on the equilibrium value of the marginal product of capital. Existence is obtained under weaker conditions than in Le Van et al. (2002) . Moreover, we provide an existence result for an economy with a regressive tax studied in Santos (2002) . The proofs rely on ideas of Becker and Boyd (1997) .
The New Generation of Resonant Laser Ionization Mass Spectrometers: Becoming Competitive for Selective Atomic Ultra-Trace Determination?
2002
A critical assessment of the present status of resonant laser ionization mass spectrometry (RIMS) as a specialized analytical technique for the field of atomic ultra-trace determination is attempted and a comparison with established mass spectrometric methods is made. Within the last years RIMS on atomic species has rapidly developed towards becoming a versatile experimental technique, in particular addressing those applications that require high selectivity in respect of isobaric or isotopic interferences. This progress is mainly based on the advent of easy-to-handle tunable solid-state laser systems for both pulsed and continuous operation, which are used in combination with modern compac…
Periodic Discrete and Discrete-Time Splines
2018
Periodic discrete splines with different periods and spans are introduced in Sect. 3.4 of Volume I (Averbuch, Neittaanmaki and Zheludev, Spline and Spline Wavelet Methods with Applications to Signal and Image Processing, Springer, Berlin, 2014) [2]. In this chapter, we regard periodic discrete splines as a base for the design of periodic discrete-time wavelets, wavelet packets and wavelet frames. Therefore, only the discrete splines whose spans are 2 are outlined. These discrete splines are linear combinations of the discrete B-splines. So also, the so-called discrete-time splines are discussed in the chapter that are linear combinations of the discrete-time B-splines. The discrete-time B-s…
Discrete-Time Periodic Wavelet Packets
2014
Direct and inverse wavelet and wavelet packet transforms of a spline are implemented by filtering the spline’s coordinates by two-channel critically sampled p-filter banks. In this chapter, those p-filter banks are utilized for processing discrete-time signals. The p-filter banks generate discrete-time wavelets and wavelet packets in the spaces of 1D and 2D periodic signals.
