Approximation of Continuous Media Models for Granular Systems Using Cellular Automata

In this paper a new cellular automata model suitable for granular systems simulation is presented. The proposed model is shown to be equivalent to a particularization of the well known BCRE model of granular systems and a correspondence between the parameters of the presented model and the BCRE model is also set, allowing to fit these parameters for a given system. The model has the advantage over other cellular automata models of being more realistic in the behavior of the surface of heaps and slopes. The dynamics of the CA is analyzed in order to confirm that it also has one of the most important features of these systems, 1/f noise.

Comment on “Surface diffusion near the points corresponding to continuous phase transitions” [J. Chem. Phys. 109, 3197 (1998)]

It is well known that unlike static equilibrium properties, kinetic quantities in Monte Carlo simulations are very sensitive to the details of the algorithm used for the microscopic transition rates. This is particularly true near the critical region where fluctuations are pronounced. We demonstrate that when diffusion of oxygen adatoms near the order–disorder transition of a lattice-gas model of the O/W(110) model system is studied, the transition rates must be chosen carefully. In particular, we show that the choice by Uebing and Zhdanov [J. Chem. Phys. 109, 3197 (1998)] is inappropriate for the study of critical effects in diffusion.

Network design for surface water quality monitoring in a road construction project using Gamma Test theory

Road construction has a negative environmental impact on the surrounding aquatic environment, requiring the continuous monitoring of surface water quality. Here, optimization of the water quality monitoring network (WQMN) is an essential step in supporting the sustainable development of road construction projects. This study introduces Gamma Test theory (GTT) as a practical method for optimizing the WQMN of surface waters during road construction. Analysis of discrete and continuous distributions of ventilatory time constants from dynamic computed tomography.

In this study, an algorithm was developed to measure the distribution of pulmonary time constants (TCs) from dynamic computed tomography (CT) data sets during a sudden airway pressure step up. Simulations with synthetic data were performed to test the methodology as well as the influence of experimental noise. Furthermore the algorithm was applied to in vivo data. In five pigs sudden changes in airway pressure were imposed during dynamic CT acquisition in healthy lungs and in a saline lavage ARDS model. Sustainability of modern agro-hydrology requires the knowledge of spatial and temporal variability of vegetation biomass to optimize management of land and water resources. Diversely from optical imaging, temporal resolution of active sensors, such as SAR, is not limited by sky cloudiness; thus, they may be combined with optical imageries to provide a more continuous monitoring of land surfaces. AbstractWe show that the realization Ap of the elliptic operator Au=div(Q∇u)+F⋅∇u+Vu in Lp(RN,RN), p∈[1,+∞[, generates a strongly continuous semigroup, and we determine its domain D(Ap)={u∈W2,p(RN,RN):F⋅∇u+Vu∈Lp(RN,RN)} if 1<p<+∞. The diffusion coefficients Q=(qij) are uniformly elliptic and bounded together with their first-order derivatives, the drift coefficients F can grow as |x|log|x|, and V can grow logarithmically. Our approach relies on the Monniaux–Prüss theorem on the sum of noncommuting operators. Discontinuous Galerkin semi-Lagrangian method for Vlasov-Poisson

We present a discontinuous Galerkin scheme for the numerical approximation of the one-dimensional periodic Vlasov-Poisson equation. The scheme is based on a Galerkin-characteristics method in which the distribution function is projected onto a space of discontinuous functions. Safety and side effects of human and ovine corticotropin-releasing hormone administration in man.

Synthetic human and ovine corticotropin-releasing hormone (hCRH, oCRH) are commonly used as a diagnostic tool of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis. In this paper reports about side effects after various modes of CRH-application are analyzed and compared to our corresponding data of human studies with hCRH and oCRH. Generally, CRH is well tolerated after single administration and interval-application of standard doses, although minor side effects appear sometimes after higher doses (greater than 200 micrograms hCRH, oCRH) of CRH-bolus-injections.
