Enhanced flexible algorithm for the optimization of slot filling factors in electrical machines †
2020
The continuous development in the field of industrial automation and electric mobility has led to the need for more efficient electrical machines with a high power density. The improvement of electrical machines’ slot filling factors is one of the measures to satisfy these requirements. In recent years, this topic has aroused greater interest in the industrial sector, since the evolution of the winding technological manufacturing processes allows an economically sustainable realization of ordered winding arrangements, rather than random ones. Moreover, the manufacture of electrical machines’ windings must be preceded by an accurate design phase in which it is possible to evaluate the maximu…
Speed control design for a vehicle system using fuzzy logic and PID controller
2015
This paper consists of designing fuzzy and PID controllers for controlling the vehicle speed. The dynamic of the system is modeled to provide a transfer function for the plant. Fuzzy and PID controller are designed for linear model. The external disturbances such road grade is considered to stabilizing the system. Both controllers are modeled using MATLAB Simulink software. Finally, a comparative assessment of each simulated result is done based on the response characteristics.
Optimization of the domain in elliptic variational inequalities
1988
This paper is concerned with a nonsmooth shape optimization problem for the Signorini unilateral boundary-value problem. The necessary optimality conditions are derived. The results of computations are presented.
Abstract Estimates of the Rate of Convergence for Optimal Control Problems
1997
A method for solving optimal control problems with general elliptic operators is presented and analyzed. Especially, estimates of the rate of convergence for the control problems with the proposed approach are derived independently of the underlying approximation method. Some numerical experiments with the proposed method are included.
Money and the natural rate of interest: structural estimates for the United States and the Euro area
2008
We examine the role of money, allowing for three competing environments: the New Keynesian model with separable utility and static money demand; a non-separable utility variant with habit formation; and a version with adjustment costs for holding real balances. The last two variants imply forward-looking behavior of real money balances, as it is optimal for agents to allow their forecast of future interest rates to affect current portfolio decisions. We distinguish between these specifications by conducting a structural econometric analysis for the U.S. and the euro area. FIML estimates confirm the forward-looking character of money demand. Using these estimates we find that, in response to…
Evaluation of the Economic and Environmental Performance of Low-Temperature Heat to Power Conversion using a Reverse Electrodialysis – Multi-Effect D…
2019
In the examined heat engine, reverse electrodialysis (RED) is used to generate electricity from the salinity difference between two artificial solutions. The salinity gradient is restored through a multi-effect distillation system (MED) powered by low-temperature waste heat at 100 °C. The current work presents the first comprehensive economic and environmental analysis of this advanced concept, when varying the number of MED effects, the system sizing, the salt of the solutions, and other key parameters. The levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) has been calculated, showing that competitive solutions can be reached only when the system is at least medium to large scale. The lowest LCOE, at a…
Hydrogen Production from Sea Wave for Alternative Energy Vehicles for Public Transport in Trapani (Italy)
2016
The coupling of renewable energy and hydrogen technologies represents in the mid-term a very interesting way to match the tasks of increasing the reliable exploitation of wind and sea wave energy and introducing clean technologies in the transportation sector. This paper presents two different feasibility studies: the first proposes two plants based on wind and sea wave resource for the production, storage and distribution of hydrogen for public transportation facilities in the West Sicily; the second applies the same approach to Pantelleria (a smaller island), including also some indications about solar resource. In both cases, all buses will be equipped with fuel-cells. A first economic a…
The Desalination Process Driven by Wave Energy: A Challenge for the Future
2016
The correlation between water and energy is currently the focus of several investigations. In particular, desalination is a technological process characterized by high energy consumption; nevertheless, desalination represents the only practicable solution in several areas, where the availability of fresh water is limited but brackish water or seawater are present. These natural resources (energy and water) are essential for each other; energy system conversion needs water, and electrical energy is necessary for water treatment or transport. Several interesting aspects include the study of saline desalination as an answer to freshwater needs and the application of renewable energy (RE) devic…
Sustainability of the Renewable Energy Extraction Close to the Mediterranean Islands
2017
The aim of this work is to explore the possibility of transitioning a fuel powered island to a renewable powered one. This transition is analyzed for the real MV/LV distribution system of the island of Pantelleria, in the Mediterranean Sea. Particularly, this work is focused on a renewable source nowadays totally unused: wave energy. Thanks to the innovative generator prototype designed by Department of Energy of University of Palermo (Italy), wave energy is able to represent a primary source for the production of electric energy in the Mediterranean islands. The procedures applied in the present article, as well as the main equations used, are the result of previous applications made in di…
A state-space approach to mathematical modeling and parameters identification of vehicle frontal crash
2014
In this paper a state-space estimation procedure that relies on the time-domain analysis of input and output signals is used for mathematical modeling of vehicle frontal crash. The model is a double-spring–mass–damper system, whereby the front mass and real mass represent the chassis and the passenger compartment, respectively. It is observed that the dynamic crash of the model is closer to the dynamic crash from experimental when the mass of the chassis is greater than the mass of the passenger compartment. The dynamic crash depends on pole placement and the estimated parameters. It is noted that when the poles of the model are closer to zero, the dynamic crash of the model is far from the…
