Mycotoxins in dry-cured meats: A review

2017

Dry-cured meats products are consumed in various regions of the world and, consumers are increasingly demanding better quality and safety of these products. Some fungal species can produce mycotoxins in drycured meats, such as aflatoxins and ochratoxins, which, when ingested, can produce carcinogenic and mutagenic effects in humans. Contamination of these products can occur at different points of the production chain, from the field (animal contaminated with feed) to the production or storage of the final product. Although the presence of mycotoxins in drycured meats has been reported in several regions of the world, the presence of these contaminants are not legislated in most countries. T…

Biological control of plant diseases

2000

The present chapter reviews the question of developing a microbial control method of plant diseases. All problems which may occur, from the initial screening of an efficient biocontrol agent to the final step of integration of the biological control method into the crop management system are briefly examined.

Face masks considerably reduce COVID-19 cases in Germany

2020

Significance Mitigating the spread of COVID-19 is the objective of most governments. It is of utmost importance to understand how effective various public health measures are. We study the effectiveness of face masks. We employ public regional data about reported severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infections for Germany. As face masks became mandatory at different points in time across German regions, we can compare the rise in infections in regions with masks and regions without masks. Weighing various estimates, we conclude that 20 d after becoming mandatory face masks have reduced the number of new infections by around 45%. As economic costs are close to zero compared to oth…

Dental extractions in patients on antiplatelet therapy. A study conducted by the Oral Health Department of the Navarre Health Service (Spain).

2008

Objectives: Antiplatelet drugs are used to treat and prevent a wide range of cardiovascular pathologies and/or cerebrovascular accidents. Although the use of anticoagulants in dental extractions is highly protocolized, a clear control method has not yet been established for antiplatelet drugs. This study is directed at evaluating the clinical consequences of extractions in patients on antiplatelet therapy. Study design: The Oral Health Department of the Navarre Health Service-Osasunbidea conducted a trial on 155 patients who underwent dental extractions and were receiving antiplatelet therapy. The patients were not requested to interrupt the medication and local measures were taken to contr…

Occurrence of Aflatoxins in Tigernuts and Their Beverages Commercialized in Spain

2010

A method based on matrix solid phase dispersion extraction was applied to determine aflatoxins B(1), B(2), G(1), and G(2) from tigernuts and tigernut beverages. Recoveries of each aflatoxin from tigernut (spiked at 10 microg/kg level) and from tigernut beverages (spiked at 10 microg/L level) ranged from 72.3 to 82.1% and from 74.0 to 86.3%, respectively. The limits of quantification ranged from 0.21 to 1.49 microg/kg (for tigernuts) and from 0.13 to 0.57 microg/L (for tigernut beverages) studied using liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection. The proposed extraction method followed by liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection determination was applied to 37 and 25 samples of tig…

A 9-level three-phase multilevel converter with harmonic mitigation and integrated battery balancing

2019

In this paper, a 9 level three-phase multilevel converter with a harmonic mitigation control method and an integrated battery balancing algorithm for automotive purpose is proposed. Each level of the converter is composed by a buck-boost converter and an h-bridge in cascaded connection. The control algorithm is implemented to achieve the harmonic mitigation on the output voltage waveform and to maintain the battery input voltages balanced. The design and operation of the system is described, and simulation study is reported using Matlab/Simulink platform.

Development of a dielectric spectroscopy technique for the determination of apple (Granny Smith) maturity

2010

Abstract Dielectric measurements of apple were done during its maturity in order to find relations with apple physiological compounds (sugar content, malic acid). An Agilent 85070E open-ended coaxial probe connected to an Agilent E8362B vector network analyzer were used in these experiments. All determinations were made at 30 °C from 500 MHz to 20 GHz. These assays were performed in order to consider the potential use of dielectric spectroscopy for determining the state of fruit maturity. Good correlations among apples Thiault Index with a new defined Dielectric Maturity Index were found. The Dielectric Maturity Index was related to loss factor at two punctual frequencies (0.5 GHz and dipol…

Sunscreen analysis

2005

Although there are no official analytical methods for UV filters determination in sunscreen cosmetics, their maximum content are regulated by legislation, and then analytical methods to control these products are necessary. In this paper, analytical methods for UV filters determination in cosmetics, which can be found in the literature, are reviewed. The usefulness of the analytical methods, techniques and sample preparation is discussed. The analytical methods used for the determination of UV filters in other type of samples are commented upon. Moreover, a brief overview of the European Union legislation concerning UV filters is included.

Classification of Extra Virgin Olive Oils Produced at La Comunitat Valenciana According to Their Genetic Variety Using Sterol Profiles Established by…

2009

A method to classify extra virgin olive oils (EVOOs) according to their genetic variety using sterol profiles obtained by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with mass spectrometry (MS) detection has been developed. Sterol extracts were chromatographed on a dC18 Atlantis column (100x3 mm, 3 microm) with a gradient of acetonitrile/water (0.01% acetic acid) at a flow rate of 1.0 mL min(-1) and positive-ion mode MS detection. Using linear discriminant analysis of the HPLC-MS data (extracted ion chromatograms), EVOO samples belonging to six genetic varieties cultivated at La Comunitat Valenciana, Spain (Arbequina, Borriolenca, Canetera, Farga, Picual, and Serrana), were correctly clas…
