Passive-damping design for vibration control of large structures

2013

In this work, a systematic strategy to design passive damping systems for structural vibration control is presented. The proposed design methodology is based on the equivalence between decentralized static velocity-feedback controllers and passive damping systems. By using recent developments in static output-feedback control, the design of passivedamping systems can be formulated as a single optimization problem with Linear Matrix Inequality constraints. Moreover, this optimization problem can be efficiently solved with standard numerical tools, even for large dimension systems. Due to its computational effectiveness, the proposed methodology can be applied to the design of passive damping…

Application of the Morris method for screening the influential parameters of fuzzy controllers applied to wastewater treatment plants

2011

In this paper,we evaluate the application of a sensitivity analysis to help fine-tuning a fuzzy controller for a biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal (BNPR) plant. TheMorris Screeningmethod is proposed and evaluated as a prior step to obtain the parameter significance ranking. First, an iterative procedure has been performed in order to find out the proper repetition number of the elementary effects (r) of the method. The optimal repetition number found in this study (r = 60) is in direct contrast to previous applications of the Morris method, which usually use low repetition number, e.g. r = 10 ~ 20. Working with a non-proper repetition number (r) could lead to Type I error (identify…

Experimental characterization of bodycentric passive RFID systems

2011

Recent progresses in the design of wearable RFID tag antennas stimulate the idea of passive bodycentric systems wherein the required power to drive the wearable tags is directly scavenged from the interrogation signal emitted by the reader unit. While active bodycentric links have been extensively investigated, the feasibility of passive systems is still questionable due to the poor sensitivity of the tags and to the modest read distances. This paper describes an articulated measurement campaign with textile wearable low-profile tags in the UHF RFID band. It is demonstrated that both on-body and off-body links are feasible with a power budget fully compliant with the available technology. T…

The sROD demonstrator for the ATLAS Tile Calorimeter Upgrade

2012

This work presents the early design of the super Read-Out Driver (sROD) demonstrator board for the Tile Calorimeter Demonstrator project. This project aims to test the new readout electronics architecture for the Phase 2 Upgrade of the ATLAS Tile Calorimeter, replacing the front-end electronics of one complete drawer with the new electronics during the Long Shutdown 2013, in order to evaluate its performance. The sROD demonstrator board will receive and process data from 48 channels. Moreover the sROD demonstrator board will send preprocessed data to the present trigger system, and will transmit trigger control and timing information (TTC) and Detector Control System (DCS) commands to the f…

SELF-TUNING FUZZY CONTROL OF A ROTARY DRYER

2002

Abstract Drying, especially rotary drying is without doubt one of the oldest and most common unit operations in industries. It is a very complex non-linear process including the movement of solids in addition to thermal drying. This means that both the modelling and control of a rotary dryer is difficult with conventional methods. The aim of this research was to improve dryer control by developing control systems based on self-tuning PID-type fuzzy logic controllers. The behaviour of the control systems has been tested with simulations based on the model of a pilot plant dryer located in the Control Engineering Laboratory at the University of Oulu. The control results have been compared ach…

Battery storage systems for peak load shaving applications: Part 2: Economic feasibility and sensitivity analysis

2016

This paper is the second of a two-part series, aiming to evaluate the economic feasibility of electrochemical storage systems in peak load shaving applications. The battery energy storage system (BESS) is considered to be added to a private facility, with the aim of reducing the customer electricity bill. The BESS is charged during the night, when the electricity prices are the lowest and discharged during the daily hours, when the prices are the highest, contemporary achieving a leveling of the daily usage pattern. The economical evaluations are carried out considering four different electrochemical technologies: lithium-ion (li-ion), advanced lead-acid, sodium-sulphur (NaS) and flow batte…

AGILITY AND THE ROLE OF PROJECT — INTERNAL CONTROL SYSTEMS FOR INNOVATION PROJECT PERFORMANCE

2019

As a reaction to the rapidly changing environment, organisations increasingly use agile project management (APM) methods to develop innovation. The associated process changes necessitate the adaption of organisational structures and control systems. This study draws on Simon’s Levers-of-Control framework (LOC) to explore the impact of different control levers on innovation project performance. Based on a survey of 316 project managers and product owners, the results suggest that the use of interactive project control systems and project-internal belief systems has a positive impact on the innovation outcome, regardless of the degree of agility of the project. Furthermore, we reveal that a s…

Kalman filtering applied to Profibus-DP systems. Multirate control systems with delayed signals

2008

In networked control systems several devices (controllers, sensors and actuators) share a common communication resource. This feature can introduce variable and even random delays when those devices try to transmit information through the shared medium. The limited bandwidth capabilities of the transmission medium also can restrict the freedom to set the sampling periods in the control loop. An attempt to reduce the significance of the signal delays and save to some bandwidth can be based on high values of sampling periods. Usually this solution has remarkable effects in the system performance because with higher sampling periods closed loop response capabilities are decreased. This paper p…

Multimedia applications in industrial networks: integration of image processing in profibus

2003

This paper analyzes the transmission of images through Profibus for applications concerned with the processing of images integrated in control systems, by means of a detailed study of two real cases with different bandwidth requirements. We analyze the special features of an artificial vision system making use of Profibus as a transport system, the scheduling of the traffic in order to guarantee the delivery of the images and the control traffic before their deadlines, the protocol used, and the compression techniques usable in this kind of system, which enable us to reduce the necessary bandwidth for the applications without degrading the operation of the image processing application. We p…

Life cycle assessment of a solar thermal collector: sensitivity analysis, energy and environmental balances

2005

Abstract Starting from the results of a life cycle assessment of solar thermal collector for sanitary warm water, an energy balance between the employed energy during the collector life cycle and the energy saved thanks to the collector use has been investigated. A sensitivity analysis for estimating the effects of the chosen methods and data on the outcome of the study was carried out. Uncertainties due to the eco-profile of input materials and the initial assumptions have been analysed. Since the study is concerned with a renewable energy system, attention has been focused on the energy indexes and in particular the “global energy consumption”. Following the principles of Kyoto Protocol, …
