In this work we present the results of a study about the impact of CAD tools on Sensitivity and Specificity in mammographic diagnosis. The approach is aimed to evaluate the statistical significance through the comparison of these figures of merit obtained in different situations. For this purpose two different CAD tools, the CALMA station (INFN project) and the SecondLook™ station (by CADx) have been used as a support for radiologists.
Unsupervised Numerical Characterization in Determining the Borders of Malignant Skin Tumors from Spectral Imagery

For accurate removal of malignant skin tumors, it is crucial to assure the complete removal of the lesions. In the case of certain ill-defined tumors, it is clinically challenging to see the true borders of the tumor. In this paper, we introduce several computationally efficient approaches based on spectral imaging to guide clinicians in delineating tumor borders. First, we present algorithms that can be used effectively with simulated skin reflectance data. By using simulated data, we gain detailed information about the sensitivity of the different approaches and how variables defined by algorithms act in the skin model. Analytical model for the long- distance tracer-transport in plants

International audience; Recent investigations of long-distance transport in plants using non-invasive tracer techniques such as C radiolabeling monitored by positron emission tomography (PET) combined with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed the need of dedicated methods to allow a quantitative data analysis and comparison of such experiments. Focusing on the interplay between interface chemistry, electrochemistry, and integrated electronics, we show a novel low-cost and flexible biosensing platform for continuous glucose monitoring. The amperometric biosensing system features a planar three-electrode structure on a plastic substrate, and a wireless near-field communication-powered electronic system performing sensor analog front-end, A/D conversion, digital control, and display tasks. In questa memoria si presenta una sintesi delle attività condotte nell'ambito del progetto SERPICO ("Sviluppo E Realizzazione di Prototipi di Inverter per impianti fotovoltaici a Concentrazione", PO-FESR Sicilia 2007-2013, Misura 4.1.1.2). Il progetto ha riguardato lo sviluppo di un prototipo di impianto fotovoltaico-termico a concentrazione e del relativo sistema di monitoraggio e controllo. Tale sistema permette di acquisire le quantità sia elettriche che termiche. Inoltre esso implementa un algoritmo per l'inseguimento solare utilizzato per ottimizzare la produzione di potenza.
A PC-based instrument for automatic monitoring and control of a CPVT power plant

A PC-based instrument has been developed for the monitoring and control of a concentrated photovoltaic and thermal (CPVT) power plant. The instrument allows acquiring both electrical and thermal quantities. Moreover it implements the solar tracking algorithm used to optimize the power production.
On the Stability of the Soft Pendulum With Affine Curvature: Open-Loop, Collocated Closed-Loop, and Switching Control

This letter investigates the stability properties of the soft inverted pendulum with affine curvature - a template model for nonlinear control of underactuated soft robots. We look at how changes in physical parameters affect stability and equilibrium. We give conditions under which zero dynamics corresponding to a collocated choice of the output is (locally or globally) stable or unstable. We leverage these results to design a switching controller that stabilizes a class of nonlinear equilibria of the pendulum, which can drive the system from one equilibrium to another.
