A structured filter for Markovian switching systems

2014

In this work, a new methodology for the structuring of multiple model estimation schemas is developed. The proposed filter is applied to the estimation and detection of active mode in dynamic systems. The discrete-time Markovian switching systems represented by several linear models, associated with a particular operating mode, are studied. Therefore, the main idea of this work is the subdivision of the models set to some subsets in order to improve the detection and estimation performances. Each subset is associated with sub-estimators based on models of the subset. In order to compute the global estimate and subset probabilities, a global estimator is proposed. Theoretical developments ba…

Control design for a hypersonic aircraft using a switched linear parameter-varying system approach

2012

This paper is concerned with the control problem of an air-breathing hypersonic aircraft using a switched linear-parameter-varying systems approach. The rigid non-linear longitudinal model of a generic hypersonic aircraft is adopted with the aim of verifying the design methodology of the developed controller and switching logic. By linearizing the non-linear model of the hypersonic aircraft at trim points and dividing the velocity range into several parts, a switched linear parameter-varying model for the underlying system is derived. With the aid of multiple Lyapunov-like functions technique, controllers that ensure the tracking of given commands of the closed-loop system are designed und…

Using input shaping and pressure feedback to suppress oscillations in slewing motion of lightweight flexible hydraulic crane

2015

This paper presents a method to actively reduce vibrations in the flexible mechanical structure of a hydraulically actuated vehicle loader crane. Based on information on the natural frequency and damping of a simplified model of the crane an input shaping scheme is set up to control the proportional valve leading to substantially reductions in oscillations. The method is compared and combined with a pressure feedback control of the proportional valve that actively suppresses transient variations in pressure. A full scale vehicle loader crane is used in the experimental verification of the method, and the motion of the tool point of the crane is measured by a high precision laser tracker. Th…

Semiactive Backstepping Control for Vibration Reduction in a Structure with Magnetorheological Damper Subject to Seismic Motions

2009

The use of magnetorheological (MR) dampers for mitigating vibrations caused by seismic motions in civil engineering structures has attracted much interest in the scientific community because of the advantages of this class of device. It is known that MR dampers can generate high damping forces with low energy requirements and low cost of production. However, the complex dynamics that characterize MR dampers make difficult the control design for achieving the vibration reduction goals in an efficient manner. In this article, a semiactive controller based on the backstepping technique is proposed. The controller was applied to a three-story building with an MR damper at its first floor subje…

Computer active control of damping fluid of a racing superbike suspension scheme for road safety improvement spin-off

2008

This paper describes in detail a computational investigation of a newly-conceived scheme of hydraulic active racing motorcycle suspension and its design application based on a computer-aided control of damping fluid. Through ad hoc tests on a full-scale model setup and the theoretical approach of a non linear 8th-order suspension scheme, this study gives enhancement of the damping fluid active control on the feedback branch of the entire control system for significant improvement of the suspension response to typical road inputs. Briefly, the fluid flow in suspension dampers - generated through well-suited high-pressure hydraulic circuit - shall be conveniently controlled in direction and m…

Extended friction model of a hydraulic actuated system

2012

The main contribution of this paper is an experimental validation and comparison of three different friction models for an electro-hydraulic servo system. The first is the well-kn own LuGre model which incorporates dynamic friction effects. The second model is based on a relatively recent publication by Yanada in 2008 [6], which incorporates liquid film thickness in the servo valve. The third model is a new contribution presented in this paper, where valve underlap and mass acceleration are combined with the LuGre model. The experimental results show that for hydraulic systems, the film thickness model is an improvement over the LuGre model, while the new model presented in this paper is an…

A Simple Method to Assess Loadability of Radial Distribution Networks

2005

This paper proposes a simple method to asses loadability in radial distribution systems. The relevant problem of voltage stability has been dealt with in past times with reference to higher voltage systems for generation and transmission. In more recent papers, the problem has been considered also at distribution level, since the new electrical energy market requirements and the increasing loadings are now more and more influencing these systems. The proposed method is based on a static approach and proceeds by first evaluating the stability indices and then the different loadability factors (related to real, reactive and apparent power). These calculations are carried out by identifying, s…

Low-Power Design of Delay Interpolating VCO

2008

In this paper, a design methodology for low-power MCML based delay interpolating VCOs is presented. The methodology allows a fast and accurate graphical evaluation of the optimum design. It utilizes two closed form expressions for the upper and lower oscillation frequencies of the VCO. An expression of the tuning range is also derived. The effectiveness of the proposed design methodology has been tested by simulating several VCOs in an IBM 0.13 mum CMOS technology.

Numerical Analysis of Medium Scale PV Plants and Their Power-Flow Control System With a Simple Three Phase Inverter

2012

This paper presents a mathematical analysis of a medium scale Photovoltaic (PV) power generation system connected to the distribution network and of its control system, in which the conversion stage is unique thanks to the absence of a boost chopper. Boost choppers are usually used as actuator for maximum power point tracking (MPPT). The conducted analysis leads to the conclusion that the used inverter presents two degrees of freedom that can be easily exploited in a control system in which the inverter simultaneously realizes the interconnection to the grid and at the same time realizes the MPPT control. The structure of the control system is then presented, discussed and then validated by…
