Synthesis of phenothiazine-based di-anchoring dyes containing fluorene linker and their photovoltaic performance

2015

Abstract A new di-anchoring organic dye based on phenothiazine featuring A-D-π-D-A (acceptor-donor-π-linker-donor-acceptor) configuration with fluorene as the π linker was designed and successfully synthesized. Compared to the corresponding mono-anchoring D-A congener, this new dye exhibited a broader and stronger absorption in the light wavelength ranging from 400 nm to 600 nm and thus showed a more efficient photovoltaic performance for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The overall power conversion efficiency (η) of this new dye in a sensitized solar cell amounted to 5.70%, which is 17% higher than that of the equivalent based counterpart (4.87%). On the other hand, the introduction of …

Metal-free organic dyes with di(1-benzothieno)[3,2-b:2′,3′-d]pyrrole as a donor for efficient dye-sensitized solar cells: Effect of mono- and bi-anch…

2019

Abstract Four novel metal-free organic dyes WL1a-b and WL2a-b containing di(1-benzothieno)[3,2-b:2′,3′-d]pyrrole (DBTP) as electron donor were synthesized and applied for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), where DBTP was firstly employed as a donor in the organic dyes. It has been demonstrated that the dyes WL with DBTP as a donor show better photovoltaic performance than the reference dye PTZ with phenothiazine as a donor. In comparison with WL1a-b with one cyanoacrylic acid as mono-anchor, WL2a-b with two cyanoacrylic acids as bi-anchors show a broader light absorption on the TiO2 film and higher molar extinction coefficients in solution, resulting in higher power conversion efficiency. …

High performance p-type segmented leg of misfit-layered cobaltite and half-Heusler alloy

2015

In this study, a segmented p-type leg of doped misfit-layered cobaltite Ca_(2.8)Lu_(0.15)Ag_(0.05)Co_4O_(9+δ) and half-Heusler Ti_(0.3)Zr_(0.35)Hf_(0.35)CoSb_(0.8)Sn_(0.2) alloy was fabricated and characterized. The thermoelectric properties of single components, segmented leg, and the electrical contact resistance of the joint part were measured as a function of temperature. The output power generation characteristics of segmented legs were characterized in air under various temperature gradients, ΔT, with the hot side temperature up to 1153 K. At ΔT ≈ 756 K, the maximum conversion efficiency reached a value of ∼5%, which is about 65% of that expected from the materials without parasitic l…

Molecular design of the diketopyrrolopyrrole-based dyes with varied donor units for efficient dye-sensitized solar cells

2014

Abstract Three types of novel diketopyrrolopyrrole-based organic dyes ( Type 1 – 3 ) with phenyl unit as an additional π -bridge and triphenylamine or phenothiazine as the donors are designed and synthesized for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Type 1 dyes incorporating the donor segment directly to the diketopyrrolopyrrole core lead to a better electron communication between the donor and acceptor, allowing an efficient charge transfer process. Type 2 and Type 3 dyes with a phenyl unit between the donor and diketopyrrolopyrrole unit show lower delocalization of the excited state. Compared with Type 3 dyes, Type 1 dyes exhibit higher conjugated skeleton co planarity and shorter electron …

Highly efficient and stable dye-sensitized solar cells based on SnO2nanocrystals prepared by microwave-assisted synthesis

2012

Highly efficient dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) with excellent long-term stability were fabricated based on tin(IV) oxide (SnO2) nanocrystals with tunable morphologies and band energy levels. The nanocrystals were prepared by a facile, fast, and energy-saving microwave-assisted solvothermal reaction. Through variation of the precursor base used during nanocrystal synthesis control over morphology was achieved—precursor metal cations are known to have a strong influence on the growth process of SnO2 nanostructures. A simple and economic way to prepare semiconducting pastes for photoanodes was devised. The photovoltaic performance of dye-sensitized solar cells based on SnO2 photoanodes wa…

Photonic Crystal‐Driven Spectral Concentration for Upconversion Photovoltaics

2014

The main challenge for applying upconversion (UC) to silicon photovoltaics is the limited amount of solar energy harvested directly via erbium-based upconverter materials (24.5 W m–2). This could be increased up to 87.7 W m–2 via spectral concentration. Due to the nonlinear behavior of UC, this could increase the best UC emission by a factor 13. In this paper, the combined use of quantum dots (QDs)—for luminescent down-shifting—and photonic crystals (PCs)—for reshaping the emission—to achieve spectral concentration is shown. This implies dealing with the coupling of colloidal QDs and PC at the high-density regime, where the modes are shifted and broadened. In the first fabricated all-optica…

Efficiency comparison between SiC- and Si-based active neutral-point clamped converters

2015

This paper presents an efficiency comparison between silicon-carbide technology and silicon technology. In order to achieve this, the efficiency of an active neutral-point clamped converter built up with silicon carbide power-devices is compared with the efficiency of an active neutral-point clamped converter built up with silicon power-devices, under a particular operating mode and a particular selection of devices. Firstly, overall losses of both converters are estimated. Then, experimental tests are carried out to measure their overall losses and efficiency. Finally, experimental results are compared with the estimations to support the analysis. The efficiency of the SiC converter is hig…

NIR excitation of upconversion nanohybrids containing a surface grafted Bodipy induces oxygen-mediated cancer cell death

2020

We report the preparation of water-dispersible, ca. 30 nm-sized nanohybrids containing NaYF4:Er3+, Yb3+ up-conversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), capped with a polyethylene glycol (PEG) derivative and highly loaded with a singlet oxygen photosensitizer, specifically a diiodo-substituted Bodipy (IBDP). The photosensitizer, bearing a carboxylic group, was anchored to the UCNP surface and, at the same time, embedded in the PEG capping; the combined action of the UCNP surface and PEG facilitated the loading for an effective energy transfer and, additionally, avoided photosensitizer leaching from the nanohybrid (UCNP-IBDP@PEG). The effectiveness of the nanohybrids in generating singlet oxygen after n…

Optimized blue light generation in optically contacted walk-off compensated RbTiOAsO4 and KTiOP1−yAsyO4

1999

Abstract We study type II 1.32 μm second harmonic generation (SHG) in a RbTiOAsO 4 optically contacted walk-off compensated device. The reduction of the effective walk-off angle by a factor of 3.7 with respect to KTiOPO 4 for the same interaction leads to an enhancement by a factor of 10 of the conversion efficiency. A model is proposed for both type I and type II SHG in such a structure. The angular tuning curve is a multi-peaked one, as predicted by the model. The enhancement of the SHG conversion efficiency allows us to optimize the generation of blue laser light at 440 nm: a specially designed KTiOP 0.98 As 0.02 O 4 solid solution crystal achieves angular non-critical phase matching at …
