Different methods of cell quantification can lead to different results: a comparison of digital methods using a pilot study of dendritic cells in HIV…

2019

Background Although new digital pathology tools have improved the positive cell quantification, there is a heterogeneity of the quantification methods in the literature. The aim of this study was to evaluate and propose a novel dendritic cells quantification method in squamous cell carcinoma comparing it with a conventional quantification method. Material and Methods Twenty-six squamous cell carcinomas HIV-positive cases affecting the oropharynx, lips and oral cavity were selected. Immunohistochemistry for CD1a, CD83, and CD207 was performed. The immunohistochemical stains were evaluated by automated examination using a positive pixel count algorithm. A conventional quantification method (u…

Reliability of liver stiffness measurement in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: the effects of body mass index

2011

Summary Background  Liver stiffness measurement (LSM) using transient elastography (TE) is used to stage fibrosis in patients with liver disease, diagnostic reliability and the factors affecting its performance in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are incompletely understood. Aim  To assess LSM. Methods  Consecutive NAFLD patients (n = 169), assessed by liver biopsy (Kleiner score), anthropometrical, biochemical and metabolic features, underwent LSM using TE with standard M probe. Results  Liver stiffness measurement was not reliable in 23 patients (14%) due to obesity. Among patients with a reliable TE, a LSM value >7.25 kPa was the best cut-off for predicting signifi…

Pathogenesis and clinicohistopathological caractheristics of melanoacanthoma: A systematic review.

2015

Introduction: The melanoacanthoma is a rare benign pigmented tumor, characterized by a fast radial growth and clinical behavior similar to melanoma. Color changes in oral mucosa and dermis are consequence of increased melanocyte activity as response to an irritant factor. There is a vast phenotypic variety. It is difficult to distinguish between a benign pigmented lesion and a melanoma at its early stage. Due to its clinical relevance is crucial to diagnose possible malignancy of the lesions. Objectives: The aim of this article is to conduct a systematic review of all published articles, as well as update and evaluate etiologic factors and clinicopathological features. Langerhans cell histiocytosis with oral manifestations: a rare and unusual case report

2012

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), is a rare, proliferative disorder in which the accumulation of pathologic Langerhans cells leads to local tissue infiltration and destruction. We present a case of a 32 years old, completely edentulous female patient who presented with erythema of hard palate, maxillary alveolar mucosa and mucosa over the distobuccal part of mandibular alveolar ridge with foci of ulcerations. Histopathologic features were suggestive of LCH which was confirmed by immunohistochemistry which was CD1a positive, confirmatory for LCH. Bone scan revealed multiple bone involvement. At this stage, disease had already progressed to multisystem involvement with endocrinal abnormali…

Prognostic significance of c-erB-2 mRNA in ovarian carcinoma.

1996

The oncogene specific mRNA of c-erbB-2 was detected by the S1 nuclease protection assay in 95 ovarian cancer specimens. In 79 primary carcinomas, we found 16 (20%) with strong expression, 13 (17%) with weak expression, 4 (5%) with very weak expression, and 46 (58%) with no expression. In 3 of 16 recurrencies (19%) a strong expression of c-erbB-2 mRNA was detected, in 2 (12%) weak expression was detected, and in 11 (69%) no expression of c-erbB-2 mRNA was detected. Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed no significant association between strong expression of c-erbB-2 mRNA and survival of the 79 patients with primary cancer. However, in the subgroup of patients with FIGO (International Federation of …

An interesting approach for the diagnosis of hepatic fibrosis: Wáng et al., “A combined use of intravoxel incoherent motion MRI parameters can differ…

2017

Since its description in 1986 by Le Bihan et al. , intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) diffusion MR imaging has made great progresses (1-4). Many studies demonstrated the influence of various pathologies on the diffusion parameters especially in case of cirrhosis and fibrosis. However, few of them are useful at the individual level because of the variability of IVIM values (5). It is indeed very difficult to measure precisely PF and Dfast (6,7). Many published work tried to improve the precision of the measurements, tries to better understand the diffusion patterns, improve the image acquisition sequences or image post-processing. Unfortunately, till today, the reproducibility of the IVIM d…

Die Milzszintigraphie als Methode zur funktionellen Milzanalyse

1970

1. Percussion and palpation are only a superficial and subjective measure for the determination of a splenic tumor. Comparative scintigraphic and clinical investigations in more than 4,000 patients have shown that about 50% of spleens weighing between 600 and 750 g are not palpable. Considering the widespread use of radioisotope scanning it seems justified to claim that the size of the spleen during clinical investigation should be determined by a scan. In scientific problems one has to insist on the use of this method in any case. 2. Depending on the fact that until now no functional test for the spleen is available, it is of great importance that it is now possible to carry out a highly a…

Whole-body magnetic resonance imaging and FDG-PET/CT for lymphoma staging: Assessment of patient experience

2017

Purpose: To compare patient experience of whole-body MRI and FDG-PET/CT performed for lymphoma staging. Methods: One-hundred-fifteen patients (59 males, 56 females; 53 Hodgkin, 62 non-Hodgkin; mean age: 43.8 years) with lymphoma underwent whole-body MRI and FDG-PET/CT for staging and filled a questionnaire regarding their experience of the examinations using a 4-point Likert scale (1, very good; 4,very bad). Differences were evaluated using Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Patients were asked to express their preference on both techniques. Preferences were compared on the basis of gender, age, and Ann Arbor stage using the chi-square test. A p-value ≤ .05 was considered significant. Results: Most…

140 Characteristics and Patterns of Care of Endometrial Cancer before and during COVID-19 pandemic

2021

Introduction/Background* COVID-19 outbreak has correlated with the disruption of screening activities and diagnostic assessments. The risk of delayed diagnosis has consequently increased during the pandemic. Endometrial cancer (EC) is one of the most common gynecological malignancies and it is often detected at an early stage, because it frequently produces symptoms. Here, we aim to investigate the impact of COVID-19 outbreak on patterns of presentation and treatment of EC patients. Methodology This is a retrospective study involving 54 centers in Italy. We evaluated patterns of presentation and treatment of EC patients before (period 1: 03/01/2019 – 02/29/2020) and during (period 2: 01/04/…

A New Algorithm and Panel Construction for Pediatric Leukemia Immunophenotyping Using 10-Color Flow Cytometry

2012

Abstract Abstract 4799 Background: Rapid identification and quantification of abnormal cell populations in minimal specimen are crucial for diagnosis and longitudinal minimal residual disease (MRD) testing of childhood leukemia. So far, most standard immunophenotypic analyses are performed using antibody panels with up to five-colors and require high cell numbers. For infant and pediatric specimen, high-level multicolor analyses is highly desirable to gather sufficient data for initial diagnostic and follow up monitoring of pathologic populations. Objective: In this study, we aimed to establish a newly defined pediatric multicolor flow cytometric panel algorithm with high reliability yet mi…
