Microscopic Dynamics of Hard Ellipsoids in their Liquid and Glassy Phase

2001

To investigate the influence of orientational degrees of freedom onto the dynamics of molecular systems in its supercooled and glassy regime we have solved numerically the mode-coupling equations for hard ellipsoids of revolution. For a wide range of volume fractions $\phi$ and aspect ratios $x_{0}$ we find an orientational peak in the center of mass spectra $\chi_{000}^{''}(q,\omega)$ and $\phi_{000}^{''} (q,\omega)$ about one decade below a high frequency peak. This orientational peak is the counterpart of a peak appearing in the quadrupolar spectra $\chi_{22m}^{''}(q,\omega)$ and $\phi_{22m}^{''}(q,\omega)$. The latter peak is almost insensitive on $\phi$ for $x_{0}$ close to one, i.e. f…

The Dynamics of Supercooled Silica: Acoustic modes and Boson peak

1997

Using molecular dynamics computer simulations we investigate the dynamics of supercooled silica in the frequency range 0.5-20~THz and the wave-vector range 0.13-1.1\AA^{-1}. We find that for small wave-vectors the dispersion relations are in very good agreement with the ones found in experiments and that the frequency at which the boson-peak is observed shows a maximum at around 0.39\AA^{-1}.

Four-time rotational correlation functions

1998

A scheme to analyze four-time rotational correlation functions of any rank is developed and details for rank L = 1 and 2 are given. The scheme provides a transparent way for identifying deviations from simple Markovian dynamics as observed, e.g., in complex liquids close to the glass transition. The method should be applicable to NMR and optical multiple-pulse techniques as well as to photon correlation spectroscopy. Results are given for 2H-NMR multiple-pulse data in supercooled glycerol. We identify and analyze the dynamical heterogeneity of molecular reorientation in a range of 205 − 215 K close to the glass temperature Tg = 190 K.

Model-independent determination of dissociation energies: method and applications

2003

A number of methods are available for the purpose of extracting dissociation energies of polyatomic particles. Many of these techniques relate the rate of disintegration at a known excitation energy to the value of the dissociation energy. However, such a determination is susceptible to systematic uncertainties, mainly due to the unknown thermal properties of the particles and the potential existence of 'dark' channels, such as radiative cooling. These problems can be avoided with a recently developed procedure, which applies energy-dependent reactions of the decay products as an uncalibrated thermometer. Thus, it allows a direct measurement of dissociation energies, without any assumption …

Laser cooling of stored high-velocity ions by means of the spontaneous force

1993

A longitudinal laser cooling of ion beams at about 5% of the velocity of light has been performed at the Heidelberg Test Storage Ring with various cooling schemes employing the spontaneous force. For a 7.29-MeV $^{9}\mathrm{Be}^{+}$ beam with an initial longitudinal temperature of 2700 K, the main characteristics of laser cooling in a storage ring are discussed. When undamped, the transverse betatron oscillations of the coasting ions limit the longitudinal temperature after laser cooling to typically 1 K. After damping the transverse motion by precooling the ions with an electron cooler, longitudinal temperatures of below 30 mK have been obtained in the subsequent laser cooling. In this cas…

Spatial separation of atomic states in a laser-cooled ion crystal

1998

A laser cooled ion crystal containing several hundred Ca+ ions has been stored in a linear Paul trap. Cooling is provided by a red detund laser at the 4S1/2−4P1/2 resonance transition. A second laser serves for repumping of those ions which decay from the excited 4P1/2 level to the metastable 3D3/2 state. The ions can be additionally excited by a third laser to a long lived metastable 3D5/2 energy level which decouples them from the cooling laser radiation. The light pressure acting upon the laser cooled ions pushes them into the direction of the laser beam. The ions in the metastable 3D5/2 state, however, do not experience any light pressure force and diffuse to the crystal side which poin…

Scaling behavior in the dynamics of a supercooled Lennard-Jones mixture

1994

We present the results of a large scale molecular dynamics computer simulation of a binary, supercooled Lennard-Jones fluid. At low temperatures and intermediate times the time dependence of the intermediate scattering function is well described by a von Schweidler law. The von Schweidler exponent is independent of temperature and depends only weakly on the type of correlator. For long times the correlation functions show a Kohlrausch behavior with an exponent $\beta$ that is independent of temperature. This dynamical behavior is in accordance with the mode-coupling theory of supercooled liquids.

Translational and rotational diffusion in supercooled orthoterphenyl close to the glass transition

1992

Self diffusion coefficients in supercooled orthoterphenyl (OTP) have been determined down toD t =3·10−14 m2s−1 using a1H-NMR technique applying static field gradients up to 53T m−1 In a range of more than two decades theD t values agree with those of photochromic tracer molecules of the same size determined by forced Rayleigh scattering down to the glass transition temperatureT g . A change of mechanism is found for translational diffusion atT c ≈1.2T g whereD t is proportional to the inverse shear viscosityη −1 atT>T c butD t ∼η ξ with ξ=0.75 atT<T c . Rotational correlation times determined by2H-NMR stimulated echo techniques in deuterated OTP remain proportinal toη −1 down toT g . Our re…

Neutron scattering and molecular correlations in a supercooled liquid

1999

We show that the intermediate scattering function $S_n(q,t)$ for neutron scattering (ns) can be expanded naturely with respect to a set of molecular correlation functions that give a complete description of the translational and orientational two-point correlations in the liquid. The general properties of this expansion are discussed with special focus on the $q$-dependence and hints for a (partial) determination of the molecular correlation functions from neutron scattering results are given. The resulting representation of the static structure factor $S_n(q)$ is studied in detail for a model system using data from a molecular dynamics simulation of a supercooled liquid of rigid diatomic m…

How Does the Relaxation of a Supercooled Liquid Depend on Its Microscopic Dynamics?

1998

Using molecular dynamics computer simulations we investigate how the relaxation dynamics of a simple supercooled liquid with Newtonian dynamics differs from the one with a stochastic dynamics. We find that, apart from the early beta-relaxation regime, the two dynamics give rise to the same relaxation behavior. The increase of the relaxation times of the system upon cooling, the details of the alpha-relaxation, as well as the wave vector dependence of the Edwards-Anderson-parameters are independent of the microscopic dynamics.
