Guided Optical Waves in a Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal Layer: A Birefringence Analysis of Molecular Orientation on the Switching Process

Abstract Guided optical waves are very sensitive to the alteration of optical properties of dielectric media. In this report, we demonstrate the use of guided waves for studying dynamic behavior of ferroelectric liquid crystals. Propagating light in the anisotropic medium suffers a birefringent effect, which causes coupling of p- and s-polarized light. Theoretical calculations, based on the Maxwell equations, successfully describe this phenomena, using a dielectric tensor diagonal in molecular coordinates, which is transformed to the laboratory coordinate system by three Euler angles. Target point calculation in the computerized tomography. Comparison of different stereotactic methods

The adaptation of computerized tomography for stereotactic operations requires the transformation of the coordinates of the target point from the CT image space into the stereotactic frame space. Two basic solutions for this transformation are realized in the most of the contemporary stereotactical systems. The indirect geometric method adjusts the frame coordinate system mechanically and identifies its origin in the CT image. There are 6 degrees of freedom: 3 of rotation and 3 of translation which have to be taken into consideration. The chapter examines what we can know about gender from the perspective of the three primary notions introduced by Descartes in his correspondence with Princess Elisabeth of Bohemia. Shift-and-scale-invariant pattern recognition using an elliptic coordinate-transformed phase-only filter

A shift-and-scale-invariant elliptic coordinate-transformed phase-only filter in proposed. The filter is built in three steps: the complex conjugate of a basic-size target spectrum is calculated, its phase-only part is taken, and then the elliptic coordinate transformation is made. In the extreme case the scale ratio of recognizable objects equals 1:1.5, permitting good recognition of object sizes S within the range 0.83/= S/= 1.25. Discrimination abilities and relative Horner efficiencies of a few versions of the filter are calculated.

Development of Point-to-Point Path Control in Actuator Space for Hydraulic Knuckle Boom Crane

This paper presents a novel method for point-to-point path control for a hydraulic knuckle boom crane. The developed path control algorithm differs from previous solutions by operating in the actuator space instead of the joint space or Cartesian space of the crane. By operating in actuator space, almost all the parameters and constraints of the system become either linear or constant, which greatly reduces the complexity of both the control algorithm and path generator. For a given starting point and endpoint, the motion for each actuator is minimized compared to other methods. Graph cut-based method for segmenting the left ventricle from MRI or echocardiographic images

International audience; In this paper, we present a fast and interactive graph cut method for 3D segmentation of the endocardial wall of the left ventricle (LV) adapted to work on two of the most widely used modalities: magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and echocardiography. Our method accounts for the fundamentally different nature of both modalities: 3D echocardiographic images have a low contrast, a poor signal-to-noise ratio and frequent signal drop, while MR images are more detailed but also cluttered and contain highly anisotropic voxels. Accurate expansion of cylindrical paraxial waves for its straightforward implementation in electromagnetic scattering

Abstract The evaluation of vector wave fields can be accurately performed by means of diffraction integrals, differential equations and also series expansions. In this paper, a Bessel series expansion which basis relies on the exact solution of the Helmholtz equation in cylindrical coordinates is theoretically developed for the straightforward yet accurate description of low-numerical-aperture focal waves. The validity of this approach is confirmed by explicit application to Gaussian beams and apertured focused fields in the paraxial regime. Finally we discuss how our procedure can be favorably implemented in scattering problems.

Weighted Extrapolation Techniques for Finite Difference Methods on Complex Domains with Cartesian Meshes

The design of numerical boundary conditions in high order schemes is a challenging problem that has been tackled in different ways depending on the nature of the problem and the scheme used to solve it numerically. In this paper we propose a technique to extrapolate the information from the computational domain to ghost cells for schemes with structured Cartesian Meshes on complex domains. This technique is based on the application of Lagrange interpolation with weighted filters for the detection of discontinuities that permits a data dependent extrapolation, with high order at smooth regions and essentially non oscillatory properties near discontinuities.
