Coping with Oxygen

2010

Sometime before 2.7 BYA, a new and biologically toxic substance began to appear in the environment. Biologically produced dioxygen, O2, probably first began to accumulate in small pools or layers above cyanobacterial mats. These photosynthesizers must have already developed ways to at least partially deal with dioxygen and, with greater difficulty, the reactive oxygen species (ROS) derived from it (see Chap. 1 and below). But for primitive anaerobes in the vicinity, these new substances must have been especially toxic. Nevertheless, it is clear that they evolved ways to cope with the new threats. One way was to simply avoid dioxygen altogether.

Modelling the evolution of cognitive styles.

2019

Abstract Individuals consistently differ in behaviour, exhibiting so-called personalities. In many species, individuals differ also in their cognitive abilities. When personalities and cognitive abilities occur in distinct combinations, they can be described as ‘cognitive styles’. Both empirical and theoretical investigations produced contradicting or mixed results regarding the complex interplay between cognitive styles and environmental conditions. Here we use individual-based simulations to show that, under just slightly different environmental conditions, different cognitive styles exist and under a variety of conditions, can also co-exist. Co-existences are based on individual speciali…

Cognitive Structuring and Its Cognitive-Motivational Determinants as an Explanatory Framework of the Fear-Then-Relief Social Influence Strategy

2017

According to the fear-then-relief technique of social influence, people who experience anxiety whose source is abruptly withdrawn usually respond positively to various requests and commands addressed to them. This effect is usually explained by the fact that fear invokes a specific program of action, and that when the source of this emotion is suddenly and unexpectedly removed, the program is no longer operative, but the person has not yet invoked a new program. This specific state of disorientation makes compliance more likely. In this paper, an alternative explanation of the fear-then-relief effect is offered. It is assumed that the rapid change of emotions is associated with feelings of …

The sample consists of music teachers (N=67) who teach instruments and music theory and teachers who teach general subjects (N=72). All the teachers filled in the Plutch…
