Binding of Short Alkyl Chain Surfactants to the (Ethylene oxide)13−(Propylene oxide)30−(Ethylene oxide)13and (Ethylene oxide)75−(Propylene oxide)30−(…

2002

The enthalpy of transfer (ΔHt) of neutral copolymers, at a fixed and low concentration ca. 10-3 mol kg-1, from water to the aqueous surfactant solutions as a function of the surfactant concentration (fSmS) was determined at 25 °C. The surfactants studied are sodium octanoate, sodium decanoate, N-octylpyridinium chloride (OPC), and N,N-dimethyloctylamine-N-oxide (ODAO). The copolymers are (ethylene oxide)13−(propylene oxide)30−(ethylene oxide)13 (L64) and (ethylene oxide)75−(propylene oxide)30−(ethylene oxide)75 (F68). The two copolymers show different hydrophilic−hydrophobic ratios, the larger being for F68. As a general feature, the shape of the ΔHt vs fSmS curve depends on the nature of t…

Reaktionskinetik der Polymerisationshemmung durch molekularen Sauerstoff

1957

The inhibition mechanism in the polymerization of styr…

Organobase-Catalyzed Synthesis of Multiarm Star Polylactide With Hyperbranched Poly(ethylene glycol) as the Core

2011

Multiarm star copolymers consisting of the polyether-polyol hyperbranched poly(ethylene glycol) (hbPEG) as core and poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) arms are synthesized via the organobase- catalyzed ring-opening polymerization of lactide using hbPEG as a multifunctional macroinitiator. Star copolymers with high molecular weights up to 792 000 g mol−1 are prepared. Detailed 2D NMR analysis provides evidence for the attachment of the PLLA arms to the core and reveals that the adjustment of the monomer/initiator ratio enables control of the arm length. Size exclusion chromatography measurements show narrow molecular weight distributions. Thermal analysis reveals a lower glass transition temperature, me…

Poly(isoglycerol methacrylate)-b-poly(d or l-lactide) Copolymers: A Novel Hydrophilic Methacrylate as Building Block for Supramolecular Aggregates

2010

On the basis of a new acetal-protected glycerol monomethacrylate monomer (cis-1,3-benzylidene glycerol methacrylate/BGMA) a series of potentially biocompatible and partially biodegradable homo- and block copolymers were synthesized. ATRP polymerization of BGMA yielded well-defined polyacrylates with pendant benzylidene acetal groups and high glass transition temperatures (115−130 °C). This hydrophobic poly(cis-1,3-benzylidene glycerol methacrylate) could be readily transformed into the hydrophilic and water-soluble poly(1,3-dihydroxypropyl methacrylate), referred to as poly(isoglycerol methacrylate) (PIGMA). It exclusively contains primary hydroxyl groups and therefore differs significantly…

Multi-Arm Star Poly(L-lactide) with Hyperbranched Polyglycerol Core

2007

Biocompatible multi-arm star block copolymers based on poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) have been prepared by a core-first approach, using hyperbranched polyglycerol (PG), a polyether polyol, as a polyfunctional initiator. The molecular weight of the hyperbranched initiator-core was varied from 2 200 to 5 200 g mol -1 , molecular weights of the resulting multi-arm stars were in the range of 6 700-107 000 g mol -1 (NMR), depending on the amount of dilactide (LA) added. Various monomer/initiator ratios have been employed in the Sn-catalyzed LA polymerization in order to vary the length of the lactide arms from DP n (arm) = 2 to 20 units. Detailed NMR analysis using conventional and 2D-NMR techniques (e…

Self-assembly scenarios of block copolymer stars

2011

We examine the self-organization scenarios of star-shaped AB-block copolymers, consisting of a solvophilic A-block and a solvophobic B-block, in which f such blocks are chemically anchored on a common centre on their A-parts, leaving the B-blocks exposed on their exterior. We employ a lattice model and we perform Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations for the case f = 6, varying thereby the percentage of attractive monomers as well as the concentration of stars. In agreement with previous studies on the low-functionality case f = 3 [F. Lo Verso, A.Z. Panagiotopoulos, and C.N. Likos, Phys. Rev. E 79, 010401(R) (2009)], we find that when the majority of monomers in the star are attractive, m…

Structural investigation of hybrid nanocomposites

2002

Ultra small (USANS) and small angle neutron scattering (SANS) techniques were employed to study an elastomer styrene–butadiene, where two kinds of silica fillers have been added in different amounts. Small silica-particle fillers are expected to modify morphological and mechanical properties when dispersed in the copolymer matrix. The USANS and SANS techniques can span a wide range of momentum transfer, investigating morphological properties of the filled elastomer over a number of decades in length scale. Surface and mass fractal behavior has been observed over different length scales.

Intramolecular phase separation of copolymer "bottle brushes": No sharp phase transition but a tunable length scale

2006

A lattice model for a symmetrical copolymer "bottle brush" molecule, where two types (A,B) of flexible side chains are grafted with one chain end to a rigid backbone, is studied by a variant of the pruned-enriched Rosenbluth method (PERM), allowing for simultaneous growth of all side chains in the Monte Carlo sampling. Choosing repulsive binary interactions between unlike monomers and varying the solvent quality, it is found that phase separation into an $A$-rich part of the cylindrical molecule and a $B$-rich part can occur only locally. Long range order (in the direction of the backbone) does not occur, and hence the transition from the randomly mixed state of the bottle brush to the phas…
