Competitive Adsorption of Functionalized Polymers

The adsorption and desorption of functionalized polystyrene-block-polybutadiene diblock copolymers from dilute solutions in toluene onto silicon wafers are investigated by means of null ellipsometry. The short polybutadiene block is functionalized by a reaction with 4-(3,5-dioxo-1,2,4-triazolidin-4-yl)benzoic acid. On the average there are six functional groups per chain. The polystyrene block does not adsorb on the surface. The adsorption depends on the length of the polystyrene block, and chains with short polystyrene blocks yield higher surface coverage than larger ones. Copolyamides from adipic and truxillic acids: Synthesis and characterization by direct pyrolysis in the mass spectrometer

The synthesis of a series of polyamides and copolyamides containing α-truxillic and adipic units in the chain is reported. The thermal degradation of these polymers was investigated by direct pyrolysis in the ion source of a mass spectrometer. Thermal degradation reactions were followed directly by this method by detecting the thermal- and electron-impact-induced fragments. The results obtained show a good correlation between the intensity of mass peaks characteristic of truxillic and adipic moieties and the composition of the copolyamides, as ascertained by elemental analysis. X-ray scattering experiments on oriented polysiloxanes with paired mesogens and different distances between these swallow-tailed side groups show a remarkable dependence of the smectic monolayer thickness on the degree of dilution, whereas the interplanar distance of the side groups remain nearly constant. Due to the dominating interaction of the mesogenic moieties, the flexible main chain is forced to take part in the layer formation. A packing model is proposed to explain the results of the X-ray studies. The use of preformed polymers for the preparation of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) multilayers is reviewed. Principles for polymer self-organization are outlined and the appropriate molecular designs are discussed. Recent developments in the different classes of polymers for LB multilayers are presented, and their outstanding properties highlighted.
Thermo- and light responsive micellation of azobenzene containing block copolymers

In this communication, the synthesis and characterization of thermo- and light responsive block copolymers is reported. PEO-b-PNIPAM polymers with azobenzene moieties were prepared and analyzed by turbidimetry, fluorescence, NMR and DLS measurements. A temperature controlled reversible formation as well as a light induced disruption and reformation of micellar structures in water was found.

A series of well-defined, fluorescently labelled homopolymers, random and block copolymers based on N-(2-hydroxypropyl)-methacrylamide were prepared by reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT polymerization). The polydispersity indexes for all polymers were in the range of 1.2–1.3 and the number average of the molar mass (Mn) for each polymer was set to be in the range of 15–30 kDa. The cellular uptake of these polymers was investigated in the human multi-drug resistant breast adenocarcinoma cell line MCF7/ADR. A novel graft copolymer (PE-g-LCP) consisting of polyethylene (PE) backbones and liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) branches was synthesized via reactive blending of an acrylic acid-functionalized PE (Escor 5000 by Exxon) with a semiflexible LCP (SBH 1 : 1 : 2 by Eniricerche S.p.A.). The crude reactive blending product (COP) was shown by investigation of the fractions soluble in boiling toluene and xylene and of the residue to contain unreacted Escor and SBH, together with the graft copolymer forming the interphase. A series of star-shaped poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline)s was prepared by cationic polymerization. The polymerization was initiated by dipentaerythrityl hexakis(4-nitrobenzene sulfonate) and a tosylated hyperbranched polymer of glycidol. The polymerization proceeded in a controlled manner. The star structure of the products was determined by nuclear magnetic resonance. The molar mass distributions that were measured by gel permeation chromatography with multiangle laser light scattering were narrow, and the experimental values of the molar masses were close to those predicted.
