Synthesis and solid state structures of macromolecular cylindrical brushes with varying side chain length

2004

Abstract Cylindrical brushes with a macromolecular backbone and well-defined side chains of different length (4≤ P n sc ≤38) were synthesized by polymerization of macromonomers. The effect of side chain length on the intermolecular order has been investigated by means of X-ray scattering on the melt-extruded samples. The increase of the side chain molar mass results in an increase of the intermolecular distance d according to d ∼( M n sc ) 0.476 . The contour length of the cylindrical brush polymers per main chain monomer unit, l m , was determined to slightly vary with side chain molar mass M n sc according to l m ∼( M n sc ) 0.059 . The resulting values are much less than the maximum exte…

Molecular characterization of α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-dl-aspartamide derivatives as potential self-assembling copolymers forming polymeric micelles

2003

A family of graft copolymers derivatives obtained from α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-dl-aspartamide (PHEA) have been studied as potential self-assembling macromolecules forming stable polymeric micelles at low critical micellar concentration. These polymers are obtained grafting on PHEA poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) (Mw 5000 g/mol) (PHEA–PEG), hexadecylamine (PHEA–C16) or both moieties (PHEA–PEG–C16). The PHEA derivatives were characterised by a multi-angle light scattering (MALS) photometer on line to a size exclusion chromatography system in obtaining the molar mass distribution of the polymers. In addition, to investigate the capacity to form micellar aggregates in aqueous medium the MALS pho…

1984

The synthesis and phase behaviour of azo dye containing liquid crystalline side group copolymers are described. These Copolymers show the same electro-optical effects as low molar mass guest-host systems. Their macroscopic oriented nematic structure can be frozen in below the glass transition temperature resulting in a polymer film with dichroic properties. The behaviour of the copolymers (phase behaviour, surface and electric field orientation) can be improved via mixtures with low molar mass liquid crystals.

Probe diffusion in homogeneous diblock copolymers

1998

Forced Rayleigh scattering was used to investigate the diffusion of a photoreactive dye molecule in two homogeneous poly(styrene-b-isoprene) (SI) diblock copolymers with overall molecular weights of approximately 2000. Although diffusion rates were intermediate to TTI transport in homopolymer polystyrene (PS) and polyisoprene (PI), system dynamics appear to be largely dictated in each case by the PI block. The size of the polymer jumping unit, on the other hand, is evaluated from a free-volume analysis of the data, and is found to be governed predominantly by the PS component of the copolymer. The mechanism for tracer diffusion in low-molecular-weight block copolymers appears analogous to t…

Synthesis, Morphology and Rheological Behavior of Fluoropolymer-Polyacrylate Nanocomposites

2007

Nanocomposite materials composed of a PTFE copolymer core and an acrylic copolymer shell have been prepared by seeded emulsion polymerization. The effect of seed particle number and shell polymer composition on secondary particle nucleation and film formation ability of the dispersions has been studied. While TEM reveals a core-shell structure present in the particles, AFM investigation of the film shows a nearly uniform dispersion of the fluorinated seed particles in a matrix formed by the shell polymer. Rheological measurements show composite behavior of the core-shell latex films, especially at elevated temperatures, and an increase in viscosity and storage modulus when compared with the…

Organoclay Nanocomposites from Ethylene-Acrylic Acid Copolymers

2006

A study of the structure–property relationships for nanocomposites prepared by melt compounding from ethylene–acrylic acid copolymers of varied composition and molecular architecture, and organoclays modified with different ammonium ions has been made by DSC, POM, SEM, TEM, WAXD, and rheological and mechanical tests. Within the series of clays investigated, the best levels of dispersion were displayed by those organically modified with quaternary ammonium ions containing two long alkyl tails. The relevant nanocomposites were shown to possess mixed exfoliated and intercalated morphology. The spacing of the intercalated clay stacks, most of which comprise few silicate layers, was found to be …

EVA Copolymer Based Nanocomposites

2002

Nanocomposites are a new class of polymer material with an ultrafine phase dispersion of the order of a few nanometers that shows very interesting properties often very different from those of conventional filled polymers. In this work the mechanical and optical properties of Poly-[ethylene-co-(vinyl acetate)] (EVA copolymer) based nanocomposites have been investigated to evaluate its possible use in several applications. For example, films for covering greenhouse effect. Mechanical properties, and the rigidity in particular, are, on the contrary, quite low. Nanocomposites should avoid this shortcoming if optical properties and processability are not unfavorably effected. EVA copolymer base…

Interaction in POSS-poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) nanocomposites

2013

Use of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) in polymer-based nanocomposites is promising for the design of high-performance materials for several applications. In this study, nanocomposites based on ethylene-acrylic acid (EAA) copolymer and POSS molecules were prepared by melt mixing. In particular, partial cage POSS with different pendent organic groups was used to investigate the interaction between the –OH groups of POSS and the acrylic functionalities of the matrix. All nanocomposites were characterized by mechanical, rheological, thermal and spectroscopic analyses. In addition, PE-POSS compounds were prepared under the same processing conditions for sake of comparison. The POSS …

Compatibilization of a polyethylene/polyamide 6 blend nanocomposite

2014

Polymer blends of incompatible components need to be compatibilized to give rise to a blend with good properties. At the same way, polymer/clay nanocomposites show the same problem because of different chemical nature of the polymer matrix and of the clay. Compatibilization is then necessary if an incompatible polymer blend is filled with an organomodified clay. In this work a polyethylene/polyamide 6 blend filled with an organomodified clay has been compatibilized with a maleic anyhidride grafted SEBS (styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene) copolymer and a glicidylmethacrylate-ethylene copolymer. The results show that compatibilization improves the mechanical properties in terms of elongation …

Impact of non-functionalized and ionic liquid modified carbon nanotubes on mechanical and thermal properties of ethylene- octene copolymer nanocompos…

2016

In this article the development and characterization of composites made from metallocene based ethylene-octene copolymer (EOC) with 38% octene content, non-modified or modified multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), covalently functionalised with long chain hexadecyl moiety imidazolium ionic liquid (IL-f-MWCNTs), is presented. The procedure of MWCNTs functionalization is discussed. In order to obtain a good dispersion of the filler, composites with MWCNTs and IL-f-MWCNTs in the concentration range of 0.5-12 wt.% were made by ultrasonication / thermoplastic mixing method. The results indicated improvement in mechanical properties with increase of the filler content. The methodology of the d…
