Drivers of Firm Performance: Exploring Quantitative and Qualitative Approaches

Abstract The main purpose of this paper is to identify the drivers of firm performance by exploring both quantitative indicators - based on accounting profitability, shareholder value and economic value – and qualitative approach – based on balanced scorecard and triple bottom line. A literature review will be provided in order to obtain an optimum mix of quantitative and qualitative drivers for firm performance, on one hand, and a case study will be conducted for emphasizing the importance of both approaches, on the other hand.

The use of fish bile metabolite analyses as exposure biomarkers to pulp and paper mill effluents

The exposure of caged one-year-old whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) to wood extractives and chlorophenolics from pulp and paper mill effluents in Lake Saimaa (SE Finland) was investigated. Whitefish were exposed at 17 locations affected by effluents from pulp and paper mills and at 5 reference areas. Resin and fatty acids and chlorophenolics in bile were analysed by GC and GC-MS. Cholesterol concentration in bile was also measured. Objectives Traffic speed is important to public health as it is a major contributory factor to collision risk and casualty severity. 20mph (32km/h) speed limit interventions are an increasingly common approach to address this transport and health challenge, but a more developed evidence base is needed to understand their effects. O objetivo deste artigo é explorar os indicadores para fazer o gerenciamento de duas faculdades privadas na Espanha. Fez-se a coleta de dados através de entrevista, observação direta por parte dos pesquisadores e análises de documentos internos das instituições de ensino. Ao final foi possível identificar os indicadores de gerenciamento, financeiros e não financeiros, de acordo com as quatro perspectivas do Quadro de Comando Integral (CMI, por sua sigla em espanhol). Foreign capital, credit constraints and continuity of firms’ R&D

ABSTRACTIn this article, we investigate the role of foreign capital participation as a means for firms to overcome the obstacle posed by credit constraints to sustain R&D investments. Using data for Spanish manufacturing firms in the period 1990–2006, we show that firms with foreign capital are significantly less likely to stop already initiated R&D projects and also more likely to sustain R&D investment when facing credit constraints. Our results are robust to positive selection into foreign capital participation, which we control through a set of variables chosen from a propensity score estimation, and to firms’ fixed-effects.
Gigabit Ethernet backbones with active loops

The current standard Ethernet switches are based on the Spanning Tree (ST) protocol. Their most important restriction is that they can not work when the topology has active loops. In fact, the ST protocol selects a tree from the real topology by blocking the links that are not involved in the tree. This restriction produces a network traffic unbalancing behavior saturating those link near the root switch while rest of links will be idle or with a very low utilization. This paper proposes a new transparent switch protocol for Gigabit Ethernet backbones that considerably improves the performance of current ones.
