Effects of waterborne iron overload and simulated winter conditions on acute physiological stress response of whitefish, Coregonus lavaretus

2003

Two-year-old whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) were exposed for 30 days to episodic iron overload in iron-rich humic water (5%) supplemented with inorganic iron (5 mg FeL(-1)). Two parallel laboratory exposures were performed, one under conditions simulating winter and the other under conditions simulating spring. After exposure, some of the fish were subjected to acute handling stress in the form of a short air challenge to reveal possible modification of the primary and secondary stress responses. In whitefish sampled without additional handling, iron accumulated in the liver (under spring conditions) and gills (under winter and spring conditions); plasma catecholamine and beta-estradiol (b…

Seasonality of two gill monogeneans from two freshwater fish from an oligotrophic lake in northeast Finland.

1990

The seasonal occurrence of Dactylogyrus amphibothrium and Discocotyle sagittata from the gills of ruffe (Gymnocephalus cernuus) and whitefish (Coregonus acronius), respectively was studied in Lake Yli-Kitka, a large oligotrophic lake in Northeast Finland. The lake, located near the Arctic Circle, is ice-covered for 7-8 months of the year. The prevalence of D. amphibothrium infection was 70.7% and remained high throughout all size-classes of fish. The length distribution and developmental stages of the worms indicated two generations per year. The overwintering generation produces a summer generation which lives for only a few weeks and matures in July. Discocotyle sagittata has only one gen…

Is the Anthropocene really worthy of a formal geologic definition?

2014

Scientists are actively debating whether the Anthropocene, the geologic time span (GTS) we are now living in, should be considered a period, epoch, or age in the geologic timescale. The solution is not easy, because the beginning of this GTS is undefined and the end unknown. In fact, there is no agreement on when the Anthropocene began, the proposed dates ranging from the Second World War, when radioactive fallout branded soils and sediments all over the world, to little after the end of the last glacial period, i.e. 11.7 thousand years ago, therefore coinciding with the onset of the Holocene. We are in favour of a concurrence of the Anthropocene with the Holocene, although a major impact …

Scale-related patterns in the spatial and environmental components of stream macroinvertebrate assemblage variation

2007

Aim  We examined the relative contributions of spatial gradients and local environmental conditions to macroinvertebrate assemblages of boreal headwater streams at three hierarchical extents: bioregion, ecoregion and drainage system. We also aimed to identify the environmental variables most strongly related to assemblage structure at each study scale, and to assess how the importance of these variables is related to regional context and spatial structuring at different scales. Location  Northern Finland (62–68° N, 25–32° E). Methods  Variation in macroinvertebrate data was partitioned using partial canonical correspondence analysis into components explained by spatial variables (nine terms…

Abstract. A compilation of the published literature on dust content in terrestrial and marine sediment cores was synchronized with pollen data and speleothem growth phases on the Greenland Ice Core Chronology 2005 (GICC05) time axis. Aridity patterns for eight key areas of the global climate system have been reconstructed for the last 60 000 years. These records have different time resolutions and different dating methods, i.e. different types of stratigraphy. Nevertheless, all regions analysed in this study show humid conditions during early Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS3) and the early Holocene or deglaciation, but not always at the same time. Such discrepancies have been interpreted as reg…

Datora lietotne kakuro mīklu atrisināšanai

2021

Tectonic denudation of a Late Cretaceous-Tertiary collisional belt: Regionally symmetric cooling patterns and their relation to extensional faults in…

2003

Thermochronological data reveal that the Late Cretaceous–Tertiary nappe pile of the Anatolide belt of western Turkey displays a two-stage cooling history. Three crustal segments differing in structure and cooling history have been identified. The Central Menderes metamorphic core complex represents an ‘inner’ axial segment of the Anatolide belt and exposes the lowest structural levels of the nappe pile, whereas the two ‘outer’ submassifs, the Gördes submassif to the north and the Çine submassif to the south, represent higher levels of the nappe pile. A regionally significant phase of cooling in the Late Oligocene and Early Miocene affected the outer two submassifs and the upper structural l…

182 Does emergency physician prehospital management improve outcome of severe blunt trauma?

2010

Severe blunt traumas are a leading cause of premature death and handicap. The benefit for the patient of pre-hospital management by emergency physicians remains under debate because of possible delayed hospital admission. This study aimed at comparing the impact of basic life support (BLS) performed by fire brigades with advanced life support (ALS) performed by SMUR (Service Mobile d9Urgences et de Reanimation) physicians, on 30-day mortality. The FIRST study (French Intensive Care Recorded Severe Trauma) is a French observational multicentric study designed in order to describe the modalities of severe blunt trauma management. The study population was composed of trauma patients over 18 ye…

Translation of hepatitis B virus (HBV) surface proteins from the HBV pregenome and precore RNAs in Semliki Forest virus-driven expression.

2004

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) pregenome RNA (pgRNA) serves as a translation template for the HBV core (HBc) protein and viral polymerase (Pol). HBV precore RNA (pcRNA) directs the synthesis of the precore (preC) protein, a precursor of the hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg). pgRNA and pcRNA were expressed in the Semliki Forest virus (SFV) expression system. Besides the HBc and preC proteins, there was revealed the synthesis of all three forms of HBV surface (HBs) proteins: long (LHBs), middle (MHBs) and short (SHBs), the start codons of which are located more than 1000 nt downstream of the HBc and preC start codons. Moreover, other HBV templates, such as 3′-truncated pgRNA lacking 3′ direct repeat and…
