Three ways to deliver a net positive impact with biodiversity offsets
2020
Biodiversity offsetting is the practice of using conservation actions, such as habitat restoration, management, or protection, to compensate for ecological losses caused by development activity, including construction projects. The typical goal of offsetting is no net loss (NNL), which means that all ecological losses are compensated for by commensurate offset gains. We focused on a conceptual and methodological exploration of net positive impact (NPI), an ambitious goal that implies commitment beyond NNL and that has recently received increasing attention from big business and environmental nongovernmental organizations. We identified 3 main ways NPI could be delivered: use of an additiona…
On singular integral and martingale transforms
2007
Linear equivalences of norms of vector-valued singular integral operators and vector-valued martingale transforms are studied. In particular, it is shown that the UMD(p)-constant of a Banach space X equals the norm of the real (or the imaginary) part of the Beurling-Ahlfors singular integral operator, acting on the X-valued L^p-space on the plane. Moreover, replacing equality by a linear equivalence, this is found to be the typical property of even multipliers. A corresponding result for odd multipliers and the Hilbert transform is given.
A chi si rivolgono le norme di diritto internazionale?
2023
In this chapter the traditional legal issues concerning the identification of the subjects of international law is examined according to an original perspective. First of all, the legal regimes of self-determination, minorities and national reconciliation processes are seen, as a whole; namely, as expressions of the increasing legal value of civil societies (peoples, groups) in international law. Second: the legal regime of State sovereignty is dealt with in this chapter, since sovereignty is considered as being the logical corollary of state international capacity. Third and most importantly: the legal position of individuals is not examined in general terms, but with specific regard to so…
THE ZONE MODULUS OF A LINK
2005
In this paper, we construct a conformally invariant functional for two-component links called the zone modulus of the link. Its main property is to give a sufficient condition for a link to be split. The zone modulus is a positive number, and its lower bound is 1. To construct a link with modulus arbitrarily close to 1, it is sufficient to consider two small disjoint spheres each one far from the other and then to construct a link by taking a circle enclosed in each sphere. Such a link is a split link. The situation is different when the link is non-split: we will prove that the modulus of a non-split link is greater than [Formula: see text]. This value of the modulus is realized by a spec…
The number of lifts of a Brauer character with a normal vertex
2011
AbstractIn this paper we examine the behavior of lifts of Brauer characters in p-solvable groups. In the main result, we show that if φ∈IBr(G) has a normal vertex Q and either p is odd or Q is abelian, then the number of lifts of φ is at most |Q:Q′|. As a corollary, we prove that if φ∈IBr(G) has an abelian vertex subgroup Q, then the number of lifts of φ in Irr(G) is at most |Q|.

By associating the imagination of progress with its corollary, permanent innovation, one has the feeling that modernity proceeds from a break with the past, as reflected by avant-garde artists. Nev...
Classification of n-dimensional subvarieties of G(1, 2n) that can be projected to G(1, n + 1)
2005
A structure theorem is given for n-dimensional smooth subvarieties of the Grassmannian G(1, N); with N >= n + 3, that can be isomorphically projected to G(1, n + 1). A complete classification in the cases N = 2n + 1 and N = 2n follows, as a corollary.
Claws contained in all n-tournaments
1993
Abstract We prove that any claw of order n with degree d≤ 3 8 n is n-unavoidable, which means that any tournament of order n contains it as a subdigraph. A simple corollary is that any tournament has a directed Hamiltonian path.
Sobolev embeddings, extensions and measure density condition
2008
AbstractThere are two main results in the paper. In the first one, Theorem 1, we prove that if the Sobolev embedding theorem holds in Ω, in any of all the possible cases, then Ω satisfies the measure density condition. The second main result, Theorem 5, provides several characterizations of the Wm,p-extension domains for 1<p<∞. As a corollary we prove that the property of being a W1,p-extension domain, 1<p⩽∞, is invariant under bi-Lipschitz mappings, Theorem 8.
Elementary (-1)-curves of P-3
2006
In this note we deal with rational curves in P^3 which are images of a line by means of a finite sequence of cubo-cubic Cremona transformations. We prove that these curves can always be obtained applying to the line a sequence of such transformations increasing at each step the degree of the curve. As a corollary we get a result about curves that can give speciality for linear systems of P^3.
