On the normal index of maximal subgroups in finite groups

1990

AbstractFor a maximal subgroup M of a finite group G, the normal index of M is the order of a chief factor H/K where H is minimal in the set of normal supplements of M in G. We use the primitive permutation representations of a finite group G and the normal index of its maximal subgroups to obtain results about the influence of the set of maximal subgroups in the structure of G.

Cooperative compressive power spectrum estimation in wireless fading channels

2017

This paper considers multiple wireless sensors that cooperatively estimate the power spectrum of the signals received from several sources. We extend our previous work on cooperative compressive power spectrum estimation to accommodate the scenario where the statistics of the fading channels experienced by different sensors are different. The signals received from the sources are assumed to be time-domain wide-sense stationary processes. Multiple sensors are organized into several groups, where each group estimates a different subset of lags of the temporal correlation. A fusion centre (FC) combines these estimates to obtain the power spectrum. As each sensor group computes correlation esti…

Unitary Groups Acting on Grassmannians Associated with a Quadratic Extension of Fields

2006

Let (V, H) be an anisotropic Hermitian space of finite dimension over the algebraic closure of a real closed field K. We determine the orbits of the group of isometries of (V, H) in the set of K-subspaces of V . Throughout the paper K denotes a real closed field and K its algebraic closure. Then it is well known (see, for example, [4, Chapter 2], [23]; see also [8]) that K = K(i) with i = √−1. Also we let (V,H) be an anisotropic Hermitian space (with respect to the involution underlying the quadratic field extension K/K) of finite dimension n over K. In this context we consider the natural action of the unitary group U = U(V,H) of isometries of (V,H) on the set Xd of all ddimensional K-subs…

Character sums and double cosets

2008

Abstract If G is a p-solvable finite group, P is a self-normalizing Sylow p-subgroup of G with derived subgroup P ′ , and Ψ is the sum of all the irreducible characters of G of degree not divisible by p, then we prove that the integer Ψ ( P ′ z P ′ ) is divisible by | P | for all z ∈ G . This answers a question of J. Alperin.

Irreducible restriction and zeros of characters

2000

Let G be a finite group, let N be normal in G and suppose that X is an irreducible complex character of G. Then XN is not irreducible if and only if X vanishes on some coset of N in G.

Mapping the geometry of the F(4) group.

2007

In this paper we present a construction of the compact form of the exceptional Lie group F4 by exponentiating the corresponding Lie algebra f4. We realize F4 as the automorphisms group of the exceptional Jordan algebra, whose elements are 3 x 3 hermitian matrices with octonionic entries. We use a parametrization which generalizes the Euler angles for SU(2) and is based on the fibration of F4 via a Spin(9) subgroup as a fiber. This technique allows us to determine an explicit expression for the Haar invariant measure on the F4 group manifold. Apart from shedding light on the structure of F4 and its coset manifold OP2=F4/Spin(9), the octonionic projective plane, these results are a prerequisi…

Q7-branes and their coupling to IIB supergravity

2007

We show how, by making use of a new basis of the IIB supergravity axion-dilaton coset, SL(2,R)/SO(2), 7-branes that belong to different conjugacy classes of the duality group SL(2,R) naturally couple to IIB supergravity with appropriate source terms characterized by an SL(2,R) charge matrix Q. The conjugacy classes are determined by the value of the determinant of Q. The (p,q) 7-branes are the branes in the conjugacy class detQ = 0. The 7-branes in the conjugacy class detQ > 0 are labelled by three numbers (p,q,r) which parameterize the matrix Q and will be called Q7-branes. We construct the full bosonic Wess--Zumino term for the Q7-branes. In order to realize a gauge invariant coupling …

Universal cocycles and the graph complex action on homogeneous Poisson brackets by diffeomorphisms

2020

The graph complex acts on the spaces of Poisson bi-vectors $P$ by infinitesimal symmetries. We prove that whenever a Poisson structure is homogeneous, i.e. $P = L_{\vec{V}}(P)$ w.r.t. the Lie derivative along some vector field $\vec{V}$, but not quadratic (the coefficients of $P$ are not degree-two homogeneous polynomials), and whenever its velocity bi-vector $\dot{P}=Q(P)$, also homogeneous w.r.t. $\vec{V}$ by $L_{\vec{V}}(Q)=n\cdot Q$ whenever $Q(P)= Or(\gamma)(P^{\otimes^n})$ is obtained using the orientation morphism $Or$ from a graph cocycle $\gamma$ on $n$ vertices and $2n-2$ edges in each term, then the $1$-vector $\vec{X}=Or(\gamma)(\vec{V}\otimes P^{\otimes^{n-1}})$ is a Poisson co…
