Transnationalism and Settlement of Latvian Emigrants in the Nordic Countries

2021

The intra-European migration flows have fostered debates about the intentions of migrants to settle in their destination country or return to their countries of origin. Based on a quantitative analysis of survey data ('N' = 1391), this article presents a typology of migration patterns among migrants from Latvia in the Nordic countries. Using two dimensions—attachment to the destination country and attachment to the country of origin—the article identifies and characterises the following four migration patterns: (1) bi-nationals, (2) settlers, (3) footloose migrants and (4) isolated migrants who focus on their country of origin and are willing to return (separated).

Carnaval y música: una breve semblanza de la Tuna Compostelana de 1888

2021

At the end of the 19th century, Spanish carnivals have been marked by the participation of the different tunas or also known as, estudiantinas. These groups achieved significant relevance in Galicia, especially in the city of Compostela, which, year after year, encouraged and supported the formation of groups of this nature to liven up the carnivals in the different Spanish cities. Although, different from its predecessors, the Santiago Tuna of 1888 ventured and made its mark in history, thanks to its intrepidity in having been the first Galician group that crossed the borders and enlivened the carnivals in the cities of the neighboring country, Portugal. This research, approached from a hi…

The expansion of a European feudal monarchy during the 13th Century: the Catalan-Aragonese Crown and the consequences of the conquest of the kingdoms…

2009

-Enric.Guinot@uv.es In the middle of the 13th century the Crown of Aragon conquered by military means the Muslim Mediterranean Coast of the Iberian Peninsula, incorporating it into the European feudal world; this resulted in the destruction of the Andalusí state and part of its society as well as in a redistribution of towns, villages, houses and lands among Christians. The historiography of some years ago emphasized the role of trade and urban burgesses in these new societies, but present opinion is more related to a long expansion of feudal society as well as the creation in Majorca and Valencia of a colonial society. Logically, the consequences of this process had also an effect in Catal…

Standardized testing and the promise of progress

2017

Abstract In light of the constantly expanding use of standardized tests (STs) not only in industrialized countries but also in developing nations, this article seeks to offer some reflections on the assessment path that educational systems across the world are taking. In unpacking the STs we must not take for granted a number of aspects of standardized tests—from their construction and application to their unintended consequences.  The article proceeds in four distinct but interrelated parts:  (1) understanding the assumptions and process in the development of STs, (2) probing the assumptions underlying the use of STs, (3) recognizing that STs are limited in what they can tell teachers abou…

Economic theory and space : a reconciliation

1997

Designing mobility in a city in transition : challenges from the case of Palermo

2014

Transport policy is one of the most crucial sectors in the process of adaptation of contemporary cities to the challenge of sustainable development. For its close relation with social habits and people behaviors, in fact, innovation in transports play a strategic role both in the decreasing of the environmental impact of mobility and in the improvement of the quality of the built environment. To do so, however, cities need to reach a more effective integration between transport policy and land-use planning, as well as taking full advantage by the spreading of new technologies. In this context, this paper discusses the challenges provided by the reshaping of the transport system in the metro…

Do Rent-Seeking and Interregional Transfers Contribute to Urban Primacy in Sub-Saharan Africa?

2006

We develop an economic geography model in which mobile skilled workers choose between working in the production sector or becoming part of an unproductive political elite. The elite sets tax rates on skilled and unskilled workers to maximize its own welfare by extracting rents, thereby influencing the spatial allocation of production and changing the available range of consumption goods. We show that such behavior increases the likelihood of agglomeration and of urban primacy. In equilibrium, the elite may tax the unskilled workers but will never tax the skilled workers, and there are rural-urban transfers towards the agglomeration. The size of the elite and the magnitude of the tax burden …

La Llei d’ús i ensenyament del valencià i la configuració del sistema educatiu plurilingüe valencià

2020

In this artic…
