Urban economics and endogenous dynamics in regional growth

1995

An inhabited bridge between city and countryside

2015

With its propagation beyond the ancient walls in the countryside, the contemporary urban pattern of Piacenza flakes off, is frayed, making feeble the limit between rus and urbs; the continuous and porous old town gives way to the sprawl. In this project, the main idea is that, through moderate and small signs, defined by thematic pavilions (which are the general goal to achieve according to the Summer School), the effects can affect the urban scale, in a much wider field than the real area of intervention. So in this case the pavilion itself is thought as a bridge on the threshold between city and countryside. Moreover, the soil design, starting from the edges of the city, allows to fix the…

Informational interactions and the future of cities

1998

Present-day city growth is chiefly the result of new tertiary activities such as financial and producer services, R&D, or business administration. It seems that these activities need to be more spatially concentrated than traditional manufacturing activities. These new trends affect both the structure of cities and the structure of city systems. The specific nature of the new activities concentrated in city centers makes them information intensive. These activities consume human capital, knowledge and hightech capital, which are all rapidly changing inputs; they are based on complex decisionmakingprocesses; this renders them highly information-dependent. Inasmuch as these activities are the…

The transformation of the Horatian Sabine farm in Persius? Satire 6

2020

The purpose of this article is to focus on the motif of the countryside in Roman satire. In particular, it aspires to study the way the Sabine farm is delineated in Horace's Satire 2.6 and later in his Epistles, in order to elucidate the evolution of this motif in Persius? 6th Satire. In this poem, Persius addresses Caesius Bassus, who retreats to Sabine to seek poetic inspiration, but seems trapped in the paths of earlier poetry and cannot attain bliss, while the poet achieves it in the port of Luna.

2005

This research deals with the evolution of two of the main ciuitates of the Lugdunensis prima province. It explores their territorial organisation, social and economic structures between the emergence of the Gallic Empire (260 AD) and the end of the kingdom of the Burgundians (530 AD).After tackling the methodological, archeological and historical issues raised by the study of the two ciuitates, it focuses on the city of Autun, on its small neighbouring towns (including Chalon), rural areas and religious practices. The last part is a synthesis of the data, which is set in a historical and chronological framework. This part aims at highlighting the different stages of social developments in t…

Town, industry and city

1995

1996

The city can hardly be grasped by a simple definition. Most of the available definitions are statistical or descriptive and they fail to represent the complex, multidimensional and changing nature of the urban phenomenon. The definition proposed in this paper is related to economic theory of city formation and is based on the agglomeration process and the diversity of agents and activities.

How do rural areas profile in the futures dreams by the Finnish youth?

2016

Abstract Demographic trends do not give much hope for rural regions in developed economies. Many studies prescribe rural futures as manifestations of consumption of the countryside by an urban majority. However, many of these macro-images and typologies lack explicit micro-agency. This article illustrates what are the expectations from personal futures in rural areas, where specifically and by whom. The respondents of a national survey represented the Finnish youth, who described their dream future in 2030 in terms of livelihood, accommodation and lifestyle recipe. Analysis of the dreams resulted in distinct regional profiles. Urban-adjacent rural areas are profiled as places for a cosy lif…
