Vibrational Perturbations and Ligand–Layer Coupling in a Single Crystal of Au144(SC2H4Ph)60 Nanocluster

2015

We have determined vibrational signatures and optical gap of the Au144(PET)60 (PET: phenylethylthiol, SC2H4Ph) nanocluster solvated in deuterated dichloromethane (DCM-D2, CD2Cl2) and in a single crystal. For crystals, solid-state (13)C NMR and X-ray diffraction were also measured. A revised value of 2200 cm(-1) (0.27 eV) was obtained for the optical gap in both phases. The vibrational spectra of solvated AU144(PET)60 closely resembles that of neat PET, while the crystalline-state spectrum exhibits significant inhomogeneous spectral broadening, frequency shifts, intensity transfer between vibrational modes, and an increase in the overtone and combination transition intensities. Spectral broa…

The resonant state at filling factor {\nu} = 1/2 in chiral fermionic ladders

2017

Helical liquids have been experimentally detected in both nanowires and ultracold atomic chains as the result of strong spin-orbit interactions. In both cases the inner degrees of freedom can be considered as an additional space dimension, providing an interpretation of these systems as synthetic ladders, with artificial magnetic fluxes determined by the spin-orbit terms. In this work, we characterize the helical state which appears at filling $\nu=1/2$: this state is generated by a gap arising in the spin sector of the corresponding Luttinger liquid and it can be interpreted as the one-dimensional (1D) limit of a fractional quantum Hall state of bosonic pairs of fermions. We study its main…

Potential for large-bodied zooplankton and dreissenids to alter the productivity and autotrophic structure of lakes

2014

While limnological studies have emphasized the importance of grazers on algal biomass and primary production in pelagic habitats, few studies have examined their potential role in altering total ecosystem primary production and it’s partitioning between pelagic and benthic habitats. We modified an existing ecosystem production model to include biotic feedbacks associated with two groups of large-bodied grazers of phytoplankton (large-bodied zooplankton and dreissenid mussels) and estimated their effects on total ecosystem production (TEP), and the partitioning of TEP between phytoplankton and periphyton (autotrophic structure) across large gradients in lake size and total phosphorus (TP) co…

Co-Evolutionary Coupling Between Captured and Uncaptured GDP Cycles : Cross Learning from Amazon and Finland Models for Sustainability

2019

A solution to the critical problem of a dilemma between R&D expansion and productivity decline that a majority of information and communication technology (ICT) leaders have been confronting in the digital economy is expected. It can be expected by a spinoff from economic functionality-seeking GDP-based coevolution cycle to supra-functionality beyond an economic value-seeking uncaptured GDP-driven coevolution cycle. However, the transformation dynamism remains a black box. By means of numerical simulations based on empirical analyses of the development trajectories of global ICT leaders, focusing on Amazon and Finland, together with an intensive review of preceding analyses, this paper atte…

Palladium-NHC (NHC = N-heterocyclic Carbene)-Catalyzed Suzuki–Miyaura Cross-Coupling of Alkyl Amides

2022

We report the Pd-catalyzed Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling of aliphatic amides. Although tremendous advances have been made in the cross-coupling of aromatic amides, C–C bond formation from aliphatic amides by selective N–C(O) cleavage has remained a major challenge. This longstanding problem in Pd catalysis has been addressed herein by a combination of (1) the discovery of N,N-pym/Boc amides as a class of readily accessible amide-based reagents for cross-coupling and (2) steric tuning of well-defined Pd(II)-NHC catalysts for cross-coupling. The methodology is effective for the cross-coupling of an array of 3°, 2°, and 1° aliphatic amide derivatives. The catalyst system is user-friendly, sinc…

Hydro-mechanical modelling of a natural slope affected by a multiple slip surface failure mechanism

2009

A coupled hydro-mechanical formulation is presented for the analysis of landslide motion during crisis episodes. The mathematical formulation is used to model a natural slope affected by a multiple slip surface failure mechanism, in which pore water pressure evolution was identified as the main cause for movement accelerations. An elasto-plastic constitutive model is adopted for the behaviour of slip surfaces. Material parameters are obtained by combining the available laboratory tests and the back analysis of some crisis episodes. After being calibrated and validated, the model is applied to improve the understanding of the physical processes involved and to predict the landslide behaviour…

Interaction between surface plasmon polaritons and molecules in strong coupling limit

2016

Miniaturization of optical elements and their integration to electronic circuits is limited by diffraction limit. It was realized that light being coupled to surface plasmons (SP) can overcome this limit. Employing also optically active molecules in combination with SPs can drive optical circuits to nm-scale and add functionalities. For efficient performance of plasmonic elements involving fluorescent dye molecules investigation of physics behind their interaction is of high priority. In this thesis interaction between surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and different dye molecules has been studied, especially within strong coupling limit, which brings in totally new physical properties in th…

Structure and dynamics in liquid bismuth and Bin clusters: A density functional study

2014

Density functional/molecular dynamics simulations with more than 500 atoms have been performed on liquid bismuth at 573, 773, 923, and 1023 K and on neutral Bi clusters with up to 14 atoms. There are similar structural patterns (coordination numbers, bond angles, and ring patterns) in the liquid and the clusters, with significant differences from the rhombohedral crystalline form. We study the details of the structure (structure factor, pair, and cavity distribution functions) and dynamical properties (vibration frequencies, diffusion constants, power spectra), and compare with experimental results where available. While the three short covalent bonds typical to pnictogens are characteristi…

Quantum coherent manipulation of spin information in molecular nanomagnets

2023
