Modified mode-coupling theory for the collective dynamics of simple liquids

2011

Recently it has been shown that mode-coupling theory, which accounts for the salient features of glassy relaxation near the liquid–glass transition, is also capable of describing the collective excitations of simple liquids away from the glass transition. In order to further improve the agreement between theory and computer simulations on Lennard-Jones argon we modify MCT by taking binary collisions into account. This, in fact, improves the agreement. We also show that multiplying the memory function of the original theory with a reduction factor leads to similar results.

A convenient synthesis of unsymmetrically substituted terphenyls of biologically active stilbenes via a double Suzuki cross-coupling protocol

2003

A double Suzuki cross-coupling protocol has been devised as a practical route to a variety of terphenyls. Good chemoselectivity was observed. Unsymmetrically substituted triphenylenes were also easily prepared.

On-line high-pressure extraction-high-performance liquid chromatography

1983

Abstract A coupling unit is described that allows on-line operation of a high-pressure extraction apparatus with a high-performance liquid chromatograph. The unit consists of two high-pressure sample-injection valves, connected in series. The first valve operates as a switching valve to the loop and controls the release of pressure along a packed microbore column. Two short, packed microbore columns are positioned between the first and second valve, sampling the extracted compounds over a desired period and simultaneously operating as sample loop for the second valve; the latter is the injector for the high-performance liquid chromatographic column. The unit was tested by continuous extract…

A quantitative test of the mode-coupling theory of the ideal glass transition for a binary Lennard-Jones system

1996

Using a molecular dynamics computer simulation we determine the temperature dependence of the partial structure factors for a binary Lennard-Jones system. These structure factors are used as input data to solve numerically the wave-vector dependent mode-coupling equations in the long time limit. Using the so determined solutions, we compare the predictions of mode-coupling theory (MCT) with the results of a previously done molecular dynamics computer simulation [Phys. Rev. E 51, 4626 (1995), ibid. 52, 4134 (1995)]. From this comparison we conclude that MCT gives a fair estimate of the critical coupling constant, a good estimate of the exponent parameter, predicts the wave-vector dependence …

Photo- and Electroproduction of Eta Mesons on Nucleons and Nuclei

1995

Eta photo- and electroproduction off the nucleon is investigated in an approach that contains Born terms, vector meson and nucleon resonance contributions. In a comparison with the new Mainz data we find a large sensitivity on the elementary ηN N coupling. Our analysis results in a pseudoscalar ηN N coupling with a coupling constant of g ηN N 2 /4π=0.4. Furthermore, we also study coincidence cross sections for eta electroproduction and present calculations for structure functions and kinematical conditions that are most sensitive to the S 11(1535) and the D 13(1520) resonances. Finally, we show results on the inclusive eta photoproduction off complex nuclei with a very good agreement with r…

ChemInform Abstract: “Through-Space” Nuclear Spin-Spin Couplings in Ferrocenyl Polyphosphanes and Diphosphino Cavitands: A New Way of Gathering Struc…

2010

Abstract Nuclear magnetic resonance is an invaluable technique for investigating a variety of important issues ranging from the determination of molecular structure to therapeutic medical imaging. In this respect, the indirect nuclear spin–spin coupling involving common nuclei such as 1 H, 13 C or 31 P provides, via the J constant, conclusive data for compound characterization in solution. This electron-mediated nuclear spin coupling is usually regarded as being transmitted by covalently bonded magnetic atoms. However, several experimental and theoretical studies, first focused on constrained organofluorides, and more recently devoted to phosphane ligands highlighted the existence of very i…

Refined equivalent single layer formulations and finite elements for smart laminates free vibrations

2014

A family of 2D refined equivalent single layer models for multilayered and functionally graded smart magneto-electro-elastic plates is presented. They are based on variable kinematics and quasi-static behavior for the electromagnetic fields. First, the electromagnetic state of the plate is determined by solving the strong form of the electromagnetic governing equations coupled with the corresponding interface continuity conditions and external boundary conditions. The electromagnetic state is then condensed into the plate kinematics, whose governing equations can be written using the generalized principle of virtual displacements. The procedure identifies an effective elastic plate kinemati…

Coupling Mechanics of Antikythera Gearwheels

2012

This paper discusses the gear coupling mechanics of the ancient Antikythera mechanism, among whose distinctive characteristics was the triangular shaping of the teeth. The engagement of the tooth pairs is analyzed in detail, estimating the temporal variation of the speed ratio due to the back and forth shifting of the relative instant center. The admissibility of the theoretical contact points is carefully checked, and the magnitude of the successive tooth collisions is calculated together with the energy losses arising from the particular nature of the coupling. Some interesting results are that only one tooth pair turns out to be active at each time instant and the real path may belong on…

Simulation and laboratory experimental tests of a line to shield medium voltage power line communication system

2011

A complete model of a power-line communication (PLC) system on a medium-voltage (MV) network in the case of a line-shield configuration is presented in this paper. An MV cable model in a line-shield configuration is considered together with the power transformers, the signal coupling networks, and the receiving and transmitting line coupling interface of a ST7540 FSK power-line transceiver. Simulations of the complete model of the system under consideration have been carried out for different line lengths, with and without power transformers and derivation branches. The model is validated by experimental tests performed in the laboratory. The measured results confirm the reliability of the …

Computer-aided design of substrate integrated waveguide filters for microwave and millimeter-wave applications

2009

In this paper, a Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tool of Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) filters for high frequency applications is described. Some synthesis techniques are successfully combined with a fast and accurate full-wave analysis method, thus designing several practical examples of in-line and cross-coupled SIW filters. Prototypes have been manufactured and measured showing good results for different filter topologies. A novel zigzag coupling scheme is proposed for SIW compact filters in order to achieve very restrictive specifications of ultra-wideband (UWB) systems.
