Simulation of the dynamics of hard ellipsoids

We study a system of uniaxial hard ellipsoids by molecular dynamics simulations, changing both the aspect-ratio X-0 (X-0 = a/b, where a is the length of the revolution axis and b is the length of the two other axes) and the packing fraction phi. We calculate the translational and rotational mean squared displacements, the translational D-trans and the rotational D-rot diffusion coefficients and the associated isodiffusivity lines in the phi - X-0 plane. The basic driving force of localized corrosion or corrosion protection in numerous cases is the galvanic coupling of which the dimensional aspect is fixed by a combination of scales regarding interfacial processes or properties. At the electrolyte–metal interface, it is necessary to consider the microstructure (including all real-time modification induced for example by applied stresses), the possible chemical changes at the surface of the material, and the electrolyte conductivity contribution, among others factors.

Derivation of Models for Thin Sprays from a Multiphase Boltzmann Model

We shall review the validation of a class of models for thin sprays where a Vlasov type equation is coupled to an hydrodynamic equation of Navier–Stokes or Stokes type. We present a formal derivation of these models from a multiphase Boltzmann system for a binary mixture: under suitable assumptions on the collision kernels and in appropriate asymptotics (resp. for the two different limit models), we prove the convergence of solutions to the multiphase Boltzmann model to distributional solutions to the Vlasov–Navier–Stokes or Vlasov–Stokes system. Investigations on isomerization and rearrangement of polycyclic arenes under oxidative conditions – Anodic versus reagent-mediated reactions

Abstract Electro-organic conversions at an active molybdenum anode enable the formation of fused arenes. High chemoselectivity was achieved under anodic conditions, and a reagent-induced selectivity was observed by comparison with results of MoCl5-mediated reactions. Polycyclic arenes like phenanthrenes, triphenylenes, chrysenes, or helicenes were selectively obtained in yields up to 87% and in some cases unusual rearrangements were crucial for the product formation.

Characteristics of neuronal systems in the visual cortex

The coupling complexity of cortical areas makes it very difficult to analyse them experimentally. Studies of model systems provide the possibility of adapting the analysis to the available data base and elaborating the fundamental properties that depend on the structure of the system. We propose a model system of variable complexity that is spatially two-dimensional and time-dependent, uses feedback for iteration and smoothing, includes the mapping of the cortical networks and can be nonlinear as the case requires. On the function of cell systems in area 18. Part I

In addition to the asymmetry of the spatial coupling and of the specific temporal combination of excitation and inhibition, the non-linearity is very pronounced in area 18. Taking the sequence of a linear operation and a stationary nonlinear characteristic as a model, the experimental findings can be systematized and a cell classification specified which departs from the customary ones. The hypercomplex cell system probably originates in recurrent inhibition and leads to differentiation of the patterns along their contour line. Problems of cell classification and of the type of parallelism in the visual cortex are discussed.

Influence of a nonlinear coupling on the supratransmission effect in modified sine-Gordon and Klein–Gordon lattices

International audience; In this paper, we analyze the conditions leading to the nonlinear supratransmission phenomenon in two different models: a modified fifth order Klein–Gordon system and a modified sine-Gordon system. The modified models considered here are those with mixed coupling, the pure linear coupling being associated with a nonlinear coupling. Donnan phenomena in membranes with charge due to ion adsorption. Effects of the interaction between adsorbed charged groups

A physical model for the modified Donnan phenomenon associated with ion adsorption on localized membrane sites is presented. This model accounts for the dependence of the concentration of adsorbed ions on electrolyte concentration and pH as it is influenced by the electrostatic interaction between adsorbed ions. Postinationary vacuum instability and Higgs-inflaton couplings

The Higgs-inflaton coupling plays an important role in the Higgs field dynamics in the early Universe. Even a tiny coupling generated at loop level can have a dramatic effect on the fate of the electroweak vacuum. Such Higgs-inflaton interaction is present both at the trilinear and quartic levels in realistic reheating models. In this work, we examine the Higgs dynamics during the preheating epoch, focusing on the effects of the parametric and tachyonic resonances. We use lattice simulations and other numerical tools in our studies. We find that the resonances can induce large fluctuations of the Higgs field which destabilize the electroweak vacuum.
