Quantum Backreaction on Three-Dimensional Black Holes and Naked Singularities

We analytically investigate backreaction by a quantum scalar field on two rotating Ba\~nados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) geometries: that of a black hole and that of a naked singularity. In the former case, we explore the quantum effects on various regions of relevance for a rotating black hole space-time. We find that the quantum effects lead to a growth of both the event horizon and the radius of the ergosphere, and to a reduction of the angular velocity, compared to the unperturbed values. Furthermore, they give rise to the formation of a curvature singularity at the Cauchy horizon and show no evidence of the appearance of a superradiant instability. On gravitational waves in Born-Infeld inspired non-singular cosmologies

We study the evolution of gravitational waves for non-singular cosmological solutions within the framework of Born-Infeld inspired gravity theories, with special emphasis on the Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld theory. We review the existence of two types of non-singular cosmologies, namely bouncing and asymptotically Minkowski solutions, from a perspective that makes their features more apparent. We study in detail the propagation of gravitational waves near these non-singular solutions and carefully discuss the origin and severity of the instabilities and strong coupling problems that appear. Method to compute the stress-energy tensor for a quantized scalar field when a black hole forms from the collapse of a null shell

A method is given to compute the stress-energy tensor for a massless minimally coupled scalar field in a spacetime where a black hole forms from the collapse of a spherically symmetric null shell in four dimensions. Part of the method involves matching the modes for the in vacuum state to a complete set of modes in Schwarzschild spacetime. The other part involves subtracting from the unrenormalized expression for the stress-energy tensor when the field is in the in vacuum state, the corresponding expression when the field is in the Unruh state and adding to this the renormalized stress-energy tensor for the field in the Unruh state. Vibrational modes of the stibine molecule

International audience; In this paper, we use the algebraic approach to describe the vibrational modes of stibine molecule (of C3v molecular symmetry group) up to 21 quanta. As the stibine molecule exhibits stretch-bend resonances, we build an algebraic pyramidal coupling operator between stretching modes and bending modes adapted to this molecule. The standard deviation associated to the fit of the vibrational levels is 1.75 cm-1.

Development and Study of a Micromegas Pad-Detector for High Rate Applications

In this paper, the design and the performance of two prototype detectors based on Micromegas technology with a pad readout geometry is discussed. In addition, two alternative implementations of a spark-resistent protection layer on top of the readout pads have been tested to optimize the charge-up behavior of the detector under high rates. The prototype detectors consist of 500 pads with a size of 5x4 mm, each connected to one independent readout channel, and cover an active area of 10x10 cm. The design of these prototypes and its associated readout infrastructure was developed in such a way that it can be easily adapted for large-size detector concepts.

AbstractHistorically speaking, the university has been a highly resilient organizational form; however recent pressures to become entrepreneurial threaten the institutional foundations on which that reliance is based. The chapter first provides conceptual clarity by revisiting what we argue are two distinct schools of thought on the entrepreneurial university. We show how the economic school’s conception intertwines with the rise of New Public Management (NPM) in Europe in the late 1990s and early 2000s, reframing the concept in ways that made it incompatible with resilience thinking. Granular chains for the assessment of thermal stress in slender structures

Slender beams subjected to compressive stress are common in civil and mechanical engineering. The rapid in-situ measurement of this stress may prevent structural anomalies. In this paper, we describe the coupling mechanism between highly nonlinear solitary waves (HNSWs) propagating along an L-shaped granular system and a beam in contact with the granular medium. We evaluate the use of HNSWs as a tool to measure stress in thermally loaded structures and to estimate the neutral temperature, i.e. the temperature at which this stress is null. Isolation of cross-coupling products in model studies on the photochemical modification of proteins by tiaprofenic acid

To gain insight into the chemical nature of drug-induced photoallergy, model studies have been carried out on the photochemical modification of proteins by tiaprofenic acid. Irradiation of decarboxylated tiaprofenic acid (DTPA) in the presence of p-cresol leads to C–C- and C–O-connected p-cresol “dimers”, together with DTPA hydrodimers. The p-cresol–DTPA cross-coupling product was not detected in this reaction. However, a product of this type is formed using a more hindered phenol, such as 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol.
