"Unfounded bitchy nagging performed by fools" : discourse analysis of Varusteleka's advertising

2016

Linguistic identities of Finnish students : what has English got to do with it?

2017

Monikielisyys on osa arkeamme. Tutkielmaani varten haastattelin yhteensä kahdeksaa lukiolaista tarkoituksenani kuulla, kuinka he puhuvat kielellisestä identite…

In-Between discourse and genre: doctor-patient interaction in online communication. Formal and informal features in CMC

2012

Abstract This paper presents the results of a corpus-based study which investigates the genre of medical eexchanges between doctors and medical website users. Three conversational routines (greetings, politeness, formal and informal linguistic features) are analyzed. The framework of the study is what some researchers refer to as net linguistics (Posteguillo 2003), consisting of the linguistic study of Computer Mediated Communication (CMC). The findings indicate that health posts are a relatively informal type of d/p interaction which is largely influenced by e-mails and chat conventions.

BCL2 gene polymorphisms and splicing variants in chronic myeloid leukemia.

2015

Recent data suggest that constitutional genetic variation in the antiapoptotic BCL2 gene could be associated with the susceptibility to develop chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and the clinical outcome in several hematological malignancies. The present study examines whether BCL2 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) predispose to CML or may potentially influence the disease characteristics at diagnosis. Notably, no association was observed between the four candidate BCL2 SNPs and the risk of developing CML. Instead, the 4777C>A (rs2279115) and the 5735A>G (rs1801018) SNPs were significantly associated with the disease risk profile as determined by the Sokal score. We found that such polymor…

Right atrial contractile dynamics are impaired in patients with postcapillary pulmonary hypertension.

2015

Left ventricular (LV) dysfunction in conjunction with postcapillary pulmonary hypertension (PH) is frequently associated with right ventricular (RV) dysfunction, determining the patient prognosis. Compensatory mechanisms for RV dysfunction have not been previously evaluated in detail. Since calcium dependent right atrial (RA) dynamics are a surrogate for RA contractile properties, the present study examined the calcium dependency of RA tissue obtained from patients with or without postcapillary PH. In total, 15 patients with PH (PH group; mean age, 70.7±7.2 years) and 10 patients without postcapillary PH (non-PH group; mean age, 55.7±11.8 years) who were scheduled to undergo elective left h…

EURECCA colorectal: multidisciplinary management: European consensus conference colon & rectum.

2014

Contains fulltext : 137861.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) BACKGROUND: Care for patients with colon and rectal cancer has improved in the last 20years; however considerable variation still exists in cancer management and outcome between European countries. Large variation is also apparent between national guidelines and patterns of cancer care in Europe. Therefore, EURECCA, which is the acronym of European Registration of Cancer Care, is aiming at defining core treatment strategies and developing a European audit structure in order to improve the quality of care for all patients with colon and rectal cancer. In December 2012, the first multidisciplinary consensus conference about…

Second St. Gallen European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Gastrointestinal Cancer Conference: consensus recommendations on controv…

2016

Contains fulltext : 171468pub.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) Primary treatment of rectal cancer was the focus of the second St. Gallen European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Gastrointestinal Cancer Conference. In the context of the conference, a multidisciplinary international expert panel discussed and voted on controversial issues which could not be easily answered using published evidence. Main topics included optimal pretherapeutic imaging, indication and type of neoadjuvant treatment, and the treatment strategies in advanced tumours. Here we report the key recommendations and summarise the related evidence. The treatment strategy for localised rect…

Short-course radiotherapy followed by chemotherapy before TME in locally advanced rectal cancer: The randomized RAPIDO trial

2020

4006 Background: Local control in locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) has improved. However, systemic relapses remain high even with postoperative chemotherapy, possibly due to low compliance. Short-course radiotherapy (SCRT) followed by delayed surgery with, in the waiting period, chemotherapy, may lead to better compliance, downstaging and fewer distant metastases. The main objective of the international multicenter phase III RAPIDO trial is to decrease Disease-related Treatment Failure (DrTF), defined as locoregional failure, distant metastasis, a new primary colon tumor or treatment-related death, by reducing the risk of systemic relapse without compromising local control. Methods: M…

Does endoscopic follow-up improve the outcome of patients with benign gastric ulcers and gastric cancer?

1992

This study investigated whether an endoscopic surveillance program for patients with "benign" gastric ulcers and gastric cancer leads to early detection of neoplasms and improves survival. The clinical course of all patients diagnosed between 1977 and 1986 as having either gastric ulcers or gastric cancer was followed for a minimum of 3 years. Of 597 patients with initially benign gastric ulcers, 452 (76%) returned for the recommended endoscopic follow-up examinations. In eight patients (1.8%), repeated biopsies disclosed malignant neoplasms; four of these patients (0.9%) had become asymptomatic. Survival curves were nearly identical in patients who complied and those who did not. Of 241 pa…
