Solving the Surveillance Problem

2017

This chapter examines the way surveillance is discussed in the leading Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat after the revelations made by former NSA-contractor Edward Snowden. In 2013, Snowden provided journalists with documents that revealed the unexpected extent of surveillance conducted by security agencies such as the NSA. Drawing on Critical Discourse Studies and a Foucauldian view of discourse, this article understands media discussions following the Snowden revelations as discursive struggles where the legitimacy and future of surveillance are being constructed and debated. The article examines the ways the media formulates solutions to the problems posed by surveillance, and explores…

Immigrant representations in two newspaper articles from the Daily Telegraph

2009

Violence Through Words: Cultural Aspects and Performative Agency

2020

This chapter aims at describing the ways and ploys used by words (in the various public and private contexts where they define relations) conveying a form of symbolic violence aimed at classifying genders as they play out their respective identity roles. To this end, the author refers to “euphemized discourse” (Bourdieu, 1993) and the concept of “agency” (Duranti, Etnopragmatica. La forza nel parlare. Carocci Editore, Rome, Italy, 2007) in order to describe the process of naturalization of discursive practices geared towards affirmation of the androcentric system of language. Here, a variant of Mediterranean culture which remains patriarchal and sexist is examined by means of discourse anal…

État des lieux et évaluation de la surveillance des Staphylococcus aureus résistants à la méticilline (SARM) : PMSI versus surveillance Raisin

2013

Abstract Background The surveillance of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a national priority. The rate of MRSA infections is one of six indicators tracked by the Department of Health. Since 2002, the French institute for public health surveillance (InVS) has monitored MRSA infections to estimate incidence density. Today, the use of the French administrative database (PMSI) could facilitate this surveillance. The aim of this study was to compare MRSA incidence density computed at a national level using PMSI databases with the results from the InVS taken as the reference. Methods PMSI databases for the years 2006 to 2009 were used. The reference results were those publish…

Mutual intelligibility among the sign languages of Belgium and the Netherlands

2015

AbstractIn an exploratory study of mutual intelligibility between the sign languages of the northern part of Belgium (Flemish Sign Language, VGT), the southern part of Belgium (French Belgian Sign Language, LSFB), and the Netherlands (Sign Language of the Netherlands, NGT), we tested the comprehension of VGT by signers of LSFB and NGT. In order to measure the influence of iconic structures (classifier constructions and constructed action) that linguistic analyses have shown to be similar across different sign languages, two genres were compared: narrative and informative signing. To investigate the effect of the overlap between the spoken languages surrounding the Dutch and Flemish Deaf com…

Purpose: The aim of the article is to attempt to assess the phenomenon of digital currencies through the prism of existing money definitions as well as to determine to what extent the existing definitions of money are able to answer the question whether private decentralized digital currencies are money in the traditional sense or are they a completely new phenomenon that cannot be put in the framework of previous definitions of money. The Effects of Perceptions of Parents' Use of Social and Materials Rewards on Prosocial Behaviors in Spanish and U.S.Youth

2016

We examined the links between perceived parental use of social and material rewards and prosocial behaviors across youth from two countries. Six hundred forty adolescents (297 girls; [Formula: see text] age = 15.32 years) from Valencia, Spain, and 552 adolescents (321 girls; [Formula: see text] age = 13.38 years) from the United States completed measures of their perceptions of parental use of rewards, prosocial behaviors, and empathy. Results generally showed that perceived use of social rewards was directly and indirectly positively related to prosocial behaviors via empathic tendencies. Multisensory discourse resources : decolonizing ethnographic research practices

2020

Researchers have attempted to address the intersection of multisensory and multimodal discourse practices from an interactional perspective. This study argues for the value of experiential, non-interactional multisensory discourse resources and proposes a conceptual framework of multisensory discourse resources to bridge visual and family language ideology ethnography. A year-long ethnographic case study of three Nepalese families (immigrant and transmigrant), consisting of 150 h of observational data triangulated with qualitative interviews, posed two questions: (1) How do transnational families, in the homescape, use multisensory discourse resources to provide cultural, national, religiou…
