Comparison of tumour necrosis factor and endothelin-1 between essential and renal hypertensive patients

1998

The present study was performed to compare circulating levels of tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNFalpha) and plasma endothelin 1 (ET-1), of hypertensive patients with or without renal failure and with those of normotensive healthy subjects. The study population consisted of 21 healthy normotensive subjects and 22 hypertensive patients, 11 with essential hypertension, and 11 with hypertension and chronic renal failure (CRF). Plasma ET-1 levels, serum TNFalpha and creatinine, creatinine clearance, 24-h urinary albumin excretion (UAE) were assayed, and 24-h blood pressure monitoring was obtained in all subjects. Office blood pressure was similar between hypertensive patients with and without C…

Pancreatic enzymes in chronic renal failure and transplant patients.

1992

The aim of the present study was to determine the frequency and degree of elevated serum levels of Total Amylase (TA), Pancreatic Amylase (PA), and Lipase (L) activity in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) on conservative therapy; CRF on periodical hemodialysis (HD); in renal transplant (RT) and in a control Group (C). Mean values were significantly higher in all groups than Group C for TA (p < 0.005), PA (p < 0.0001) and L (p < 0.0001). A statistically significant correlation was found between TA and L vs creatininemia values in CRF patients, but only up to a certain level (creatininemia < 6 mg %) (p < 0.03 and p < 0.05), above which there was no correlation. The enzyme most frequen…

Desmopresssin and hemodilution: implications in doping.

2009

Blood doping improves physical performance in sport. This is the reason why the antidop- ing authorities subject athletes to blood tests. Plasma volume expanders are prohibited agents used to reduce an artifi cial increase in hemato- logical values using diff erent illegal practices. The aim of our study was to test whether desmo- pressin (DDAVP)-induced hemodilution would alter the concentration of hematological param- eters used to detect blood doping in sports. This was an intra-subject crossover study. Venous blood samples were obtained from eight physi- cally active males on two occasions. On the fi rst o ccasion the subjects ingested 1.5 L of mineral water and 4.3 μ g / kg of DDAVP. O…

Blood laboratory findings in patients suffering from self-perceived electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS)

2009

Risks from electromagnetic devices are of considerable concern. Electrohypersensitive (EHS) persons attribute a variety of rather unspecific symptoms to exposure to electromagnetic fields. The pathophysiology of EHS is unknown and therapy remains a challenge. We hypothesized that some electrosensitive individuals are suffering from common somatic health problems. Toward this end we analysed clinical laboratory parameters including thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), creatinine, hemoglobine, hematocrit and c-reactive protein (CRP) in subjects suffering from EHS and in controls that are routinely used in clinical medicine to identify or…

Zinc and smoking habits in the setting of hypertension in a Spanish populations.

2014

The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between trace and toxic amounts of zinc (Zn) in biological samples (blood and urine) and the smoking habits of hypertensive patients and healthy control subjects in Valladolid (Spain). In order to compare biological samples, the concentrations of these samples were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The limits of detection for Zn in blood plasma ranged between 4.22 and 17.34 μmol l(-1) and were <0.08 μmol g(-1) creatinine in urine. The results of this study indicate that the highest mean values of serum Zn were found in non-hypertensive nonsmokers (13.39±4.35 μmol l(-1)), whereas the highest urine Zn valu…

Asymmetric Dimethylarginine and the Risk of Cardiovascular Events and Death in Patients With Coronary Artery Disease

2005

As a competitive inhibitor of endothelial nitric oxide synthase, asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) has been related to atherosclerotic disease. Little is known about the prognostic impact of baseline ADMA determination. In a prospective cohort of 1908 patients with coronary artery disease, we assessed baseline serum concentration of ADMA in 1874 consecutive patients with coronary artery disease. One hundred fourteen individuals developed the primary end point of death from cardiovascular causes or nonfatal myocardial infarction during a mean follow-up of 2.6±1.2 years. Median concentrations of ADMA levels were higher among individuals who subsequently developed the primary end point than …

ADMA, subclinical changes and atrial fibrillation in the general population.

2015

Abstract Background Pathways of oxidative stress, nitric oxide bioavailability and l-arginine derivatives are hypothesized to be related to atrial fibrillation (AF). Circulating methylated l-arginine metabolites can be assessed in the general population and may show an association with AF. Methods We determined l-arginine and its metabolites asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), l-N ω -monomethylarginine (NMMA) and symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) in the population-based Gutenberg Health Study (n=5000), mean age 55±11years, 51% men, in association with clinical variables of AF such as electrocardiographic and echocardiographic measures and manifest AF. Results Individuals with AF (N=161), 71…

Estimation of pharmacokinetic parameters of lithium from saliva and urine

1974

The salivary and urinary excretion of lithium was studied in three healthy male sub;ects after oral administration of two or three different doses. In all individuals the concentration of lithium in salivary fluid was found to be 2.2 to 3.3 times as high as the concentration in plasma. In each sub;ect the saliva:plasma concentration ratio remained constant over more than a 100 fold concentration range for at least 3 months. This ratio was not markedly affected by about tenfold changes in saliva flow rate. Thus, pharmacokinetic parameters obtained from salivary excretion data are in agreement with those obtained from plasma concentration and urinary excretion rate data, and renal clearance o…

Insulin-resistance HCV infection-related affects vascular stiffness in normotensives

2015

BACKGROUND AND AIMS. Arterial stiffness evaluated as pulse wave velocity, is an early marker of vascular damage and an independent predictor for cardiovascular events. We investigated if the insulin resistance/hyperinsulinemia chronic hepatitis C virus infection-related could influence arterial stiffness. METHODS. We enrolled 260 outpatients matched for age, body mass index, gender, ethnicity: 52 with never-treated uncomplicated chronic hepatitis C virus infection (HCV(+)), 104 never-treated hypertensives (HT) and 104 healthy subjects (NT). Pulse wave velocity was evaluated by a validated system employing high-fidelity applanation tonometry. We also measured: fasting plasma glucose and insu…

Whole-body potassium and bone mineral density up to 30 years after urinary diversion

1998

Objectives  To evaluate the long-term effects of different types of urinary diversion on skeletal bone density and whole-body potassium content in patients with an early correction of base excess (<−2.5). Patients and methods  The early correction of base excess (<−2.5) is one of the principles of the treatment of patients undergoing urinary diversion at our institution. In 27 patients with urinary diversion, bone mineral density (assessed by dual-photon absorptiometry), whole-body potassium, electrolyte and creatinine levels were determined, and capillary blood gas analysed. The mean time since surgery was 16.8 years in 16 patients with a rectal reservoir, 20.5 years in six patients with a…
