Women and transnational organized crime: the ambiguous case of the italian Mafias

2022

This chapter examines the transformation of the roles of women in Italian organized crime groups. Starting from a comparative analysis of the way in which – over time – the different manifestations of female power and male domination in certain organized crime groups (Cosa Nostra and others) have changed, we seek to understand what female power is in these contexts and what are the circumstances which make it legitimate and visible, what are the different modalities in which it expresses itself over time, in different locations and criminal contexts. The studies of women’s roles in mafias have shown how, over time, these have changed, particularly in terms of their ‘visibility’. Over the la…

Un racconto allo specchio. la costruzione del mito mafioso attraverso le sue immagini

2009

Using now the cultural models, now those of organizational and structural theories, the Cosa Nostra studies risk sometimes to achieve results spoiled by approximation and partiality. If we want to deepen the research on the impact that the media representation of the mafia produces within the criminal context or in the social construction of the phenomenon, it is essential to use tools able to frame the issue in its complexity. With this background, the paper reviews some relevant cases which clearly show how information, literature, cinematography help to give shape and strength to criminal organization: from the journalistic investigations on the "Provenzano case”, to the television seria…

Resistere alle mafie nella crisi della democrazia

2012

In a globalized world, the encounter between organized crime and 'official' economic system generates convergences of interests that arise on the boundary between legality and illegality. Globalization produces mobility and competition. To adapt to a constantly changing scene and avoid social control institutions, the new criminal systems have adopted a flexible network structure, whose methods and procedures make the boundary between what is lawful and what is not less visible, and hamper the control of legality. The degradation of democracy, that is linked to the spread of corrupt practices, lowers the "moral cost" for those people who are in the so-called gray areas, and lowers the thres…

Clientelismo e metodo mafioso: network Criminali e pubblica amministrazione in Sicilia

2011

Quale relazione lega clientelismo e mafia?

Content analysis of Spanish judgements addressing the sexual transmission of HIV: 1996-2016.

2018

This study performed a content analysis of the language of the Spanish judgements addressing the sexual transmission of HIV in order to determine its possible interrelationship with HIV-related stigma. All judgements and writs dictated by Spanish penal and civil jurisdictions between 1981 and December 2016 were obtained through a systematic search of the Spanish legal databases. The inclusion criterion was that the possible transmission of HIV was judged as an individual infraction, regardless of whether other infractions were involved. Twenty judgements were selected and analysed through direct content analysis assisted by the software MAXQDA 12. The majority of the cases (85%) were brough…

Characteristics of young offenders depending on the type of crime

2015

The aim of this study is to define a profile of juvenile offenders depending on the type of crime (against property or against persons), according to several socio-demographic variables, and a number of indicators of juvenile risk. Participants were 395 adolescents between the ages of 14 and 18 with a criminal record in the juvenile court over a two-year follow-up period. Results showed that in property-related offences the offender is more likely to be male, from an Eastern European country, and with inconsistent parenting. On the other hand, crimes against persons would be committed mostly by girls, Latin American or African juveniles, and with individual factors such as aggressive behavi…

The CSI-education effect: Do potential criminals benefit from forensic TV series?

2018

Abstract Forensic series have become popular over the last two decades. They have raised the importance of forensic evidence in the eyes of the public (CSI effect). However, it has not been investigated to what extent criminals may learn about forensic evidence through these shows. We used multiple approaches to tackle this potential CSI-education effect. First, we analyzed crime statistics for crime and detection rate. Second, we asked convicted criminals about their impressions about the usefulness of crime shows for covering up a crime. Third, we asked fans of crime series and a control group of non-watchers to slip into the role of a criminal by enacting the cleaning up a murder crime s…

Proposal for a computer-assisted analysis of lawful interceptions of communication

2016

This paper presents the potential for the analysis of texts when applied to interceptions carried out with the help of next-generation software. In order to do this, after a brief explanation of some of the main procedures, the article presents the results of an investigation into text data extracted from wiretapping and in-person conversations found in judicial documents. The amount of data, obtained through wiretapping and the use of bugs, has made it possible to gather important information about the dynamics that characterise how criminal organisations work. The use of wiretaps and bugs are, therefore, vital tools without which it would undoubtedly not have been possible to achieve the …
