Consideraciones y conducta neuroanestesiológica postoperatoria
2012
Surgery of the posterior fossa and/or craniospinal region has a high rate of postoperative morbidity and mortality, which has rarely been described in the scientific literature. This review aims to describe the available evidence in the literature on the complications associated with this type of surgery and its neuroanesthesiological and/ or neurocritical management, as well as to highlight the predisposing factors that can increase the complications rate. Knowledge of the complications related to neurosurgical disorders of the posterior fossa could aid in their prevention or help in the selection of appropriate treatment that would minimize their consequences. A systematic literature sear…

Study of different surfaces for neonates in hospital
2016
Evidence of risk of pressure ulcers in neonates pro is related to the type of bearing surface on which the neonate lays. To prevent pressure ulcers is necessary to know which of the available commercial surfaces is the most convenient. The goal of this work is to evaluate the interface and redistribution pressure of five constant low pressure devices (special surfaces for pressure management [SEMP] both static and mixed) for neonates. Next step will be the study of the properties of the new support surface with healthy subjects under clinical conditions.
The effects of arterial CO2 on the injured brain: Two faces of the same coin
2021
Serum levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) closely regulate cerebral blood flow (CBF) and actively participate in different aspects of brain physiology such as hemodynamics, oxygenation, and metabolism. Fluctuations in the partial pressure of arterial CO2 (PaCO2) modify the aforementioned variables, and at the same time influence physiologic parameters in organs such as the lungs, heart, kidneys, and the gastrointestinal tract. In general, during acute brain injury (ABI), maintaining normal PaCO2 is the target to be achieved. Both hypercapnia and hypocapnia may comprise secondary insults and should be avoided during ABI. The risks of hypocapnia mostly outweigh the potential benefits. Therefore, i…
Evaluation of early and late histamine release by three standard volume substitutes
2001
Following meta-analysis [1], the use of colloidal solutions in intensive care medicine is under discussion. Although polygeline [2] and human albumin are known to cause histamine release, other substances eg hydroxyethyl starch were thought to be without effect. Histamine release depends on the clinical scenario, concomitant drugs, infusion speed, duration and amount of infusion. However, there is no information about their effect regarding time periods longer than immediate reactions. This study investigated the histamine releasing effects of three plasma substitutes administered and observed over a longer period of time, simulating many of the clinical scenarios.
Association between elastic and muscular artery stiffness and organ dysfunction in patients with early severe sepsis
2015
Sepsis is characterised by massive inflammatory response, which can affect vascular function. As part of vascular dysfunction large arteries can be affected. To what extent changes in large artery function contribute to organ dysfunction in sepsis is not well studied.
Critical Appraisal of Scientific Articles
2009
Despite the increasing number of scientific publications, many physicians find themselves with less and less time to read what others have written. Selection, reading, and critical appraisal of publications is, however, necessary to stay up to date in one’s field. This is also demanded by the precepts of evidence-based medicine (1, 2). Besides the medical content of a publication, its interpretation and evaluation also require understanding of the statistical methodology. Sadly, not even in science are all terms always used correctly. The word "significance," for example, has been overused because significant (or positive) results are easier to get published (3, 4). The aim of this article …
Markedsføring av kosmetiske inngrep – en kvalitativ analyse
2021
Background Marketing cosmetic surgery is an under-researched topic in a Norwegian context, even though problematic aspects of such marketing have been pointed out in several contexts. This study draws attention to how providers of cosmetic surgery market their services, whom they target and how they do so. Material and method Critical discourse analysis was used as a framework for a qualitative study of the marketing activity of 36 private clinics. The data material was collected from the Internet and newspapers, and consists of text, still photos and video clips. Results and interpretation The article identifies the following marketing strategies: The providers refer to customers as patien…
