ION EXCHANGE MEMBRANE CRYSTALLIZER FOR MAGNESIUM RECOVERY FROM SEAWATER AND INDUSTRIAL BRINE

2020

The treatment and valorisation of waste brines deriving from industrial processes raised in the last years a strong interest in order to promote the whole process sustainability both in terms of minimisation of environmental impacts and raw materials recovery within a circular economy approach. With this respect, magnesium recovery from brines can be an interesting and practical example. In this work, a novel ion exchange membrane crystallizer (CrIEM1) is presented. In a CrIEM reactor, the presence of an Anion Exchange Membrane, separating a brine and an alkaline solutions, allows the passage of hydroxyl ions from the alkaline to the brine compartment, where crystallization of magnesium hyd…

Hyperosmolar therapy for acute brain injury: study protocol for an umbrella review of meta-analyses and an evidence mapping

2020

Introduction Acute brain injury is a challenging public health problem worldwide. Elevated intracranial pressure is a common complication after acute brain injury. Hyperosmolar therapy is one of the main therapeutic strategies for the management of intracranial hypertension. This study protocol outlines an umbrella review of meta-analyses which will investigate the benefits and harms of hyperosmolar therapy routinely used for the management of acute brain injury in the intensive care. Methods and analysis We will search PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. We will include meta-analyses of primary research studies (eg, randomised controlled trials, observat…

Anthropometric indices, lipid profile, and lipopolysaccharide-binding protein levels in metabolic endotoxemia: A case-control study in Calabar Metrop…

2020

Objectives: To determine the anthropometric indices, lipopolysaccharide-binding proteins (LBP), and lipid profile in patients with metabolic endotoxemia. Methods: The study comprised of 47 patients with metabolic endotoxemia (the metabolic endotoxemia group) and 43 controls (the control group). Patients in the metabolic endotoxemia group were categorized further into three subgroups including the normal weight group (n=8), the overweight group (n=12) and the obese group (n=27). Height, weight, waist, and hip circumference were measured, and waist-hip ratio (WHR) and body mass index (BMI) were calculated. LBP was determined by ELISA and total cholesterol, triglycerides, high density lipoprot…

Self-regulation of learning: the potential technologies impact of the metacognitive approach

2012

Self-regulation researchers theorize that self-regulation does not occur when learners display personal initiative, perseverance, and adaptive skill in pursuing learning. At its core, self-regulation involves self-motivation as well as metacognitive processes. Reflection on the process of learning is believed to be an essential ingredient in the development of expert teachers. By employing reflective thinking skills to evaluate the results of one’s own learning efforts, awareness of effective learning strategies can be increased and ways to use these strategies in other learning situations can be understood. In this paper, we describe how expert teachers use the knowledge they have gained o…

On a min-max principle for non-smooth functions and applications

2009

Extensions of the seminal Ghoussoub's min-max principle [15] to non-smooth functionals given by a locally Lipschitz continuous term plus a convex, proper, lower semi-continuous function are presented and discussed in this survey paper. The problem of weakening the PalaisSmale compactness condition is also treated. Some abstract consequences as well as applications to elliptic hemivariational or variational-hemivariational inequalities are then pointed out. ©Dynamic Publishers, Inc.

Pokémon GO 2016: Exploring Situational Contexts of Critical Incidents in Augmented Reality

2016

Pokémon GO, an augmented reality mobile game, captured the attention of millions of people around the world in July 2016. Various sources from around the globe have reported both positive and negative incidents and outcomes related to the game. Some of the incidents have been particularly remarkable for the player, i.e., critical incidents. A critical incident is a single experience, which a person perceives or remembers as unusually positive or negative. Critical incidents typically are highly influential for human behaviour, and thus, important to study. Playing augmented reality games can take place in varying situational contexts. Situational context includes information that can be use…

User behaviours after critical mobile application incidents : the relationship with situational context

2017

Users occasionally have critical incidents with information systems (IS). A critical IS incident is an IS product or service experience that a user considers to be unusually positive or negative. Critical IS incidents are highly influential in terms of users’ overall perceptions and customer relationships; thus, they are crucial for IS product and service providers. Therefore, it is important to study user behaviors after such incidents. Within IS, the relationships between the situational context and user behaviors after critical incidents have not been addressed at all. Prior studies on general mobile use as a related research area have recognized the influence of the situational context,…

Modeling the Sustainable Educational Process for Pupils from Vulnerable Groups in Critical Situations: COVID-19 Context in Lithuania, Latvia, and Est…

2022

The critical situation in education caused by COVID-19 has significantly reduced the involvement of pupils from vulnerable groups, particularly those with low learning achievements. The aim of this study is to reveal the modeling of the sustainable educational process and the factors that ensure optimal learning achievements of pupils from vulnerable groups in general education schools in critical educational transformation situations. To reveal the factors ensuring the sustainability of educational processes, this study was conducted in three Baltic countries (Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia) involving 1432 subject teachers from public education schools. The results of the study highlight t…
