Leukocyte–platelet aggregates—a phenotypic characterization of different stages of peripheral arterial disease
2016
The formation of monocyte-platelet aggregates and neutrophil-platelet aggregates (MPA and NPA, respectively) is influenced by inflammation, but also might contribute to an exacerbation of inflammatory responses in atherosclerotic plaque. The purpose of this study was to analyze MPA and NPA proportions in regard to different stages of peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Forty-five patients with intermittent claudication (IC) (3 groups: Rutherford (R)-1, R-2, and R-3; each n = 15), 20 patients with critical limb ischemia (CLI) (Rutherford 5 (40%) and 6 (60%)), and 20 healthy controls were studied. Analyses of monocyte (Mon) subpopulations (CD14++CD16- (classical) Mon1, CD14++CD16+ (intermediat…
Therapeutic properties of haemodialysis and blood exchange transfusion in organophosphate poisoning
1976
Human blood was contaminated with nitrostigmine, dimethoate and demeton-S-methyl sulfoxide. It was then dialysed, concentrations of organophosphates were determined and dialysance values calculated. The influence of blood exchange transfusion on poison elimination as well as on the cholinesterase activity of blood, brain and muscle was studied in rats poisoned with nitrostigmine. Haemodialysis was found to be quite an effective method for eliminating demeton-S-methyl sulfoxide and dimethoate, dialysance values of 52.98 ml/min and 59.07 ml/min being found for demeton-S-methyl sulfoxide and dimethoate respectively. Nitrostigmine could not be removed by haemodialysis. These findings suggest th…
Transgressive Learning: A Possible Vista in Higher Education?
2012
A key question for most societies is how to prepare young people for the demands of their future work and life environment. However, as Ronald Barnett (High Educ Res Dev 23(3):247–1260, 2004) remarks, ‘learning for an unknown future calls for an ontological turn from knowledge to being-in-the-world’, which makes its own demands. Being in the world calls for one’s opening up to new experiences, throwing oneself into a state of effort, engagement and inspiration.
Oscillatory integrals and fractal dimension
2021
Theory of singularities has been closely related with the study of oscillatory integrals. More precisely, the study of critical points is closely related to the study of asymptotic of oscillatory integrals. In our work we investigate the fractal properties of a geometrical representation of oscillatory integrals. We are motivated by a geometrical representation of Fresnel integrals by a spiral called the clothoid, and the idea to produce a classification of singularities using fractal dimension. Fresnel integrals are a well known class of oscillatory integrals. We consider oscillatory integral $$ I(\tau)=\int_{; ; \mathbb{; ; R}; ; ^n}; ; e^{; ; i\tau f(x)}; ; \phi(x) dx, $$ for large value…

In recent years commensal microorganisms are not just “passive occupants”, but important element of homeostasis. There are numerous reports documenting the composition and role of the gut, skin or vagina microbiome but the role of commensal organisms living in the lungs is relatively unknown. Pulmonary microbiome impact on the immune response of the host organism and may indicate new therapeutic directions. Lung microbiome, by modulating the expression of innate immunity genes, causes an increase in the concentration of IL-5, IL-10, IFNγ and CCL11, affects the TLR4 dependent response of pulmonary macrophages and modulate the production of antibacterial peptides contained in the mucus. It is…
Bridging the gap between research and practice : using phenomenographic findings to develop training for career practitioners
2021
AbstractThis study contends that phenomenography offers both a useful research method and practical tools for developing education and training for career practitioners. After introducing the basic principles of phenomenography, the study reviews previous research on its potential in developing pedagogical practices. It explores how the phenomenographic findings were utilized to design an online skills training programme for career practitioners. The study finds that phenomenographic research serves three practical pedagogical purposes: (1) revealing how learners understand certain concepts or phenomena, (2) elucidating how these understandings differ; and (3) identifying critical aspects i…
Evaluation of saltwork ponds operation through brine characterization and geochemical modelling using PHREEQC code integrating the Pitzer correction
2021
Seawater represents a potential resource for the extraction of salts and raw materials [1]. About one-third of the global table-salt production is manufactured in solar saltworks [2], being the most representative product of seawater processing. However, other valuable compounds such as Magnesium, Lithium and trace elements belonging to the alkaline/alkaline-earth metals (e.g. Rb, Cs, Sr) and transition/post-transition metals (e.g. Co, Ga, Ge) are present. Many of these elements are included in the EU Critical Raw Materials (CRM) list, grouping natural assets classified as fundamental for the wealth of the socio-economic structure of Europe [3]. In saltworks, natural evaporation of seawater…
"A 304-year experiment which worked some but not all of the time" : Britain and British identities in three English, Scottish and Welsh newspapers in…
2014
Nerve growth factor and burn wound healing: Update of molecular interactions with skin cells
2022
Burn wound healing is a very intricate and complex process that conventionally includes three interrelated and overlapping stages of hemostasis/inflammation, proliferation and remodeling. This review aims to explore the molecular interactions of NGF with the most prominent cell types in the skin and their respective secretory products during wound healing, particularly burn wound healing. Different types of cells such as, nerve cells, endothelial cells, mast cells, macrophages, neutrophils, keratinocytes and fibroblasts all come into play through a plethora of cytokines and growth factors including nerve growth factor (NGF). NGF is a pleiotropic molecule that exerts its effects on all the a…
Critical success factors for business intelligence system implementation
2017
